Quail Lodge, Carmel, USA

Bonhams began to host auctions in Monterey back in 1998 and with only RM and Christies for competition they launched with a bang. Through 2000 they were competitive with the other two before the wheels started to fall off. After some rather humdrum offerings they returned with a bang to Quail Lodge in 2008 but this wasn’t their only marquee auction and they struggled to offer the best consignments at both Quail and Goodwood with a couple more weak years hence. Fast forward to 2014 and via their major shareholder, Quail had the fabulous Violatti collection on offer with a 250GTO leading the way, selling at $38.115 million in a $107 million sale, the most expensive car at auction at the time. Once again Bonhams were unable to match that success although in 2015 and 2017 offered some superb cars and still topped $40 million but it was all downhill after that. 2021 sees Bonhams return with two fascinating pre war cars, a Bucciali and Mercedes along with a handful of exotica but they wont come close to challenging Gooding or RM.

1930 Bucciali TAV 30 La Marie Torpedo #101. Bucciali only built a handful of front wheel drive cars between 1926 and 1932 with either Continental 6 or 8 cylinder engines or even the ultra exotic Voisin V12. Several of these cars wore multiple coachwork that was updated annually to present something new at each years Paris Salon. Bucciali almost had a contract with Cord although this fell through while post bankruptcy his mid 1930s patents for a four wheel drive system went nowhere but was the basis for the Jeep and court cases to get paid also went nowhere. #101 was originally built as TAV 3 and then TAV 30 with various coachwork and taken to the USA where it was displayed at the New York Motor Show and toured the various manufacturers seeking patent licensing. TAV 30 was put into storage and eventually sold to Serge Pozzoli who did nothing with it and it passed through the hands of various restorers/ fakers including Ray Jones and ended up with Jones neighbour Uwe Hucke who was well known for his large store of parts and he “restored” the car with a modified shorter wheelbase and fitted Saoutchik coachwork from a Mercedes-Benz S-Type. TAV30 was finally sold to the Blackhawk Collection in 1985 and has remained there on display since. Other than the partial original chassis and possibly the engine and transmission (Bonhams aren’t clear) its unclear what remains of the original Bucciali TAV30. For all that this is one of six proper Bucciali’s of which perhaps two remain (the other is also entirely non-original) so its rare as hens teeth. As such somewhere around $3 – 5 million wouldn’t surprise, any more would push the boundaries for a car with stories like this, anything less would be very good value.

1928 Mercedes-Benz S-Type #35920. Prof Porsche joined Mercedes in 1923 and began promisingly enough, eventually becoming chief engineer for Mercedes-Benz although his love of small, rear engined cars was quashed in favour of designing the lighter, sportier S thru SSK Types. The S-Type featured a 200bhp supercharged 6.8 litre straight 6 fitted to a lighter, lower chassis designed for racing and fast motoring. This particular example was delivered to Dresden and fitted with either Glaser or Buhne coachwork with an unknown early German history. By the late 1930s it was in the UK and remained there for twenty years before sale to the USA and eventually spent 50 years with a family who are part of the DuPont clan. Offered from this ownership in impeccable condition it is oh so desirable although like all S-SSK it comes down to two factors, style and originality. #35920 has incredible originality but is not the sexiest S-Type extant although that said the family turned down $5 million for the car at Goodings a couple of years ago and the $3 – 4 million estimate seems a touch cheap.

1967 Ford GT40 Mark IV #J-9. Ford had already had immense success with the GT40, especially in 1966 with the Mark II but engineers in their Detroit skunkworks and Shelby International knew they had more to give so began developing a heavily revised chassis built from honeycomb alloy and fitted an all new aerodynamical body. Unfortunately Ken Miles was killed shortly after Le Mans in a testing accident and the engineers had to return to the drawing board and rethink the lift versus drag equation. The second J-car/ Mark IV proved much better and sorted many of the firsts issues and went on to win Sebring, Daytona and Le Mans in 1967, the latter the first all American victory at the French classic. Some eight cars were eventually built, every single one racing just once and the first destroyed in Miles crash although another four were laid down but never completed and two were sold to the Agapiou brothers in Beverly Hills with experimental Can Am coachwork and stored. Fast forward to 2012 when the car was acquired by a Shelby restorer and built up as a Mark IV Coupe and restored with it. While incredibly usable and with little history to worry about these later cars have been frequent offerings and recent sales have pegged them at $2 million so Bonhams $3 – 3.5 mil. estimate is expensive indeed.

1948 Talbot Lago T26 Record Figoni et Falaschi Cabriolet #3179. Italian Anthony Lago took over one of the Sunbeam-Talbot-Darracq factories and promptly renamed the Talbot firm Talbot-Lago, going on to produce a new Becchia designed 4 litre Straight six that offered 160bhp. The T150C SS went on to enormous success in the Sportscar races then popular and the road versions were even more successful, especially with Figoni et Falaschi coachwork. Post WW2 a revised T150, the 4.5 litre T26 was launched and continued to be successful through the early 1950s when the French launched a new luxury tax and crippled the company. This particular car was sold to a Frenchman and fitted with unique Figoni et Falaschi coachwork and remained in Europe until acquired by the Rosso Bianco museum and restored. John O’Quinn eventually acquired the car in the 2000s and had it restored at enormous cost before his death. Now in concours condition this is a beautiful Talbot-Lago and gives the buyer the opportunity to launch a concours program since its restoration was only completed recently and it is yet to be shown anywhere. Even still it is a very expensive non GS T26 at $1.8 – 2.3 mil.

1952 Ferrari 212 Europa Cabriolet #0233EU. The Ferrari 212 Europa was the firms first attempt at a production road car but it was still a very expensive hand built road car. Fitted with unique Ghia Cabriolet coachwork and sold to an Italian publisher when new although it was soon sold to the USA and remained there ever since, eventually deteriorating and being stored for decades. Found by Tom Shaughenessy and sold to a collector in the 2010s the car was sent to Steve Beckmann and Bill Attaway for a complete restoration to concours standards. A unique and very interesting example of the 212 Europa, it remains that these are a little underpowered and not nearly as sexy as later Ferrari’s. #0233EU has already been seen at Goodings, selling for $1.6 million at Gooding Amelia in 2018 and Bonhams current estimate of $1.7 – 2.1 million is a little strong, value at the low end?

1974 Alfa Romeo 33TT12 #AR11512*010 *. Carlo Chiti left Ferrari in the palace coup when ATS was formed and yet within a year or two was without a job although Alfa Romeo decided to follow up its successful TZ-2 GT program with the Tipo 33. While offering much in 1967 the car was never quite there and it was only the Tipo 33TT3 in 1971 that tasted success and while Alfa looked a shoe in for 1972 Ferrari and Matra took the spoils with F1 based machinery. Finally in 1973 the advanced and new Chiti designed 3 litre flat 12 offering 500bhp was launched and with Matras withdrawal dominated the 1975 season. This car took wins at Spa, Zeltweg and Watkins Glen and was then sold to Judge diLoreto, a US collector, by Alfa Romeo in 1980 and if offered by him today, in race ready condition. This is the third Tipo 33 to be offered for around the $2 million mark, the other two having failed to sell and its $1.7 – 2.2 mil. estimate might still be too much for the market, maybe $1.5 would be right?
