RM Sotheby’s Auctions was founded by Rob Myers in Canada and after taking over the Monterey Auction they began to hold sales at Amelia Island back in 1999. Now in its 20th year the RM sale goes from strength to strength with average totals shifting from the teens to the $30 – 50 million range and in 2017 hitting a record $71 million although the last noted was based on a two day sale including a full days sale of the Orin Smith collection. 2018 saw revenues drop back with just $26.6 million worth of cars sold and the top sale a paltry $2.2 million, 2019 turned around RMs Amelia Island fortunes and they saw a useful increase to $38 million in total gross sales. 2020 sees RM turn away from true marquee lots and towards plenty of surefire sellers in both the classic pre war and modern segments.

Ferrari had begun developing limited edition supercars in the early 1980s when the short lived Group B series required 200 examples for homologation and they built the 288GTO. A few years later and the F40 was built to celebrate their 40th birthday, the F50 followed and then a decade later the Enzo was launched. Matching a state of the art carbon fibre chassis with the F140 engine as also seen in the 599 and fitted with very challenging Pininfarina bodywork the Enzo was a cutting edge supercar without equal. With 651bhp and low weight the Enzo was capable of 0-60mph in 3.3 seconds and a top speed of 218mph, both the class of 2003. 399 Enzos were eventually built and all were sold before the car was even launched and at record sums for the time. RMs example was delivered to the USA and passed through just two hands with less than 1700 miles from new and is offered with all records and parts. Recent sales peg the Enzo at around $2.3 – 2.6 million so RMs estimate of $2.75 – 3 million seems high by at least $200 – 300k.

Jean Bugatti launched the Type 57 in 1934 and it rationalised the multiple Bugatti models into one luxurious sporting road car. Ettore had vetoed the IFS that Jean wanted but the 3.3 litre straight eight with or without the supercharger was the class of the field and for a country then in the throws of the depression, more than adequate. The Type 57 was available with multiple official coachwork, most commonly the Ventoux and Atalante Coupes, the Galibier Saloon and the Stelvio Cabriolet, it was also available as a bare chassis for the buyer to have clothed. A French client ordered this Type 57 to be delivered to d’Ieteren where it was one of four clothed with Cabriolet coachwork. It had a relatively typical French history and passed through the classic de Dobbeleer and Cesari pipeline to the USA where it passed through further owners and remains highly original.

Type 57 values range from $300k to $50 million depending on specification, coachwork and provenance. If we take away the Type 57S there is still a $300k – 5 million price range with the very best bespoke coachwork cars fetching the best. These generally have a level of sex appeal that the more proletariat examples lack. The d’Ieteren bodywork that was fitted to this car is super elegant but not particularly sporty nor sexy in any way and as such it must be closer to the low end than the high. As such RMs $1.5 – 2 million estimate is arguably $500k too expensive and I struggle to see it fetching that much.

Ferrari continued developing 250GT models in the 1950s with the Scaglietti designed California and Pininfarina designed Cabriolet. The Cabriolet was only ever a bespoke order car and very few were built pre 1960 when the new Short Wheelbase chassis made the Cabriolet outdated and a new car was launched. To ensure there was less competition to the California, Pininfarina redesigned the Series II Cabriolet to be a production Cabriolet and toned down the design to fit their early 1960s style. The finished product looked a lot like the Pininfarina Coupe sans roof which is effectively what it was. The example at RM was delivered to the USA where it had one very long term owner before passing through various owners. The most recent owner sent it to RM Restorations and others to be redone to Pebble Beach standards and it is now a world class example. RMs $1.4 – 1.7 million estimate would normally be too expensive but is likely correct for the quality.

The Duesenberg brothers were renowned Indycar builders and after multiple wins at the famed race they launched the Model A roadcar. Various financial issues saw the company sold to E.L. Cord who also bought Auburn and re-hired Fred Duesenberg to develop arguably the ultimate American motorcar. With a 265bhp 7 litre straight 8 engine and a large, strong, rather vintage chassis available in varying lengths the Model J was always sold chassis only for the customers chosen coachbuilder to build coachwork to whatever specification was desired. Unfortunately production commenced in very late 1928 and deliveries in early 1929 so when the depression hit some months later the company was severely hurt. The first Duesenberg on offer is a Murphy Convertible Coupe that was delivered to Jake “the Barber” Factor in California and later passed through the trade before landing in the S. Ray Miller collection and there it was restored. 1 of 25 Murphy Convertibles built, this Model J is offered in nice mellow condition, ideal for either use or further restoration and RM have given it a $1.4 – 1.8 million estimate.

Another Duesy on offer is a 1932 Rollston Stationary Victoria which was originally delivered to a Mr. Norris on the East coast. After multiple short term owners this Duesy ended up in Sam Scherr’s collection, one of the pinnacle collections of the time. Robert Atwell was another great collector and he added it to his collection in 1965, later sending it to Gus Reuter for a cosmetic restoration. The current vendor acquired the car in 2016 and the car has been freshened throughout by Brian Joseph and others. RM have provided this Model J with a $1.2 – 1.4 million estimate. Like the Bugatti Type 57s, Model Js are largely valued by specification and coachwork with a $500k – 20 million value, even the standard Model Js are worth $500k – 3 million. The Murphy Convertible is a far more desirable open topped car with some sex appeal so one would think towards the top end of the valuation but there was 25 examples made so they aren’t super rare. The Rollston Stationary Victoria is much rare since its a one off and its beautiful but its no convertible and as such it isn’t as sexy. Its understandable why the open car is worth $500k more than the Coupe and they are both market correct.

Ferrari had developed their first limited edition supercar with the 288GTO which needed 200 examples to provide homologation for a proposed Group B version. Ferrari allowed Michelotto to develop a competition spec variant with the 288GTO Evoluzione but tis was launched well after Group B was already cancelled. While the 288GTO program was a failure, the Evoluzione did provide a platform for the next limited edition Ferrari and with Ferrari’s upcoming fortieth birthday they decided to develop it into a production supercar with the 478bhp engine. While 300 – 500 examples of every other Ferrari supercar would be built the F40 was produced for five years and some 1200 would be built. This increase in production was largely due to the speculative market causing a bubble in automobiles which ran from 1987 – 1990. This particular F40 is one of the 22 production cars from 1992 and was sold new to the USA where it is now offered with just 12,000 miles from new and in exceptional condition. RM has given the F40 an estimate of $1.2 – 1.4 million and that is market correct for a car in this condition.

Two cars were built for the new Group B track series, the Ferrari 288GTO and the Porsche 959. The 959 was developed from the 911 drivetrain with a special modified four wheel drive system fitted and fitted to a special chassis and body made out of kevlar and carbon fibre. This chassis was fitted with a 450bhp production version of the twin turbo 2.85 litre 956 flat six engine, a six speed gearbox and advanced electronics. Production wouldn’t begin until 1986 with deliveries commencing in 1987 and some 337 cars were eventually built through 1992. RMs car is a German delivery which passed through various owners hands before export to the USA in the early 2000s and was modified and federalised by Canepa Design. Now one of a handful of California certified 959s this is one is offered with less than 6,000 miles from new. RM have given this 959 a $1 – 1.25 million estimate which is market correct for the type in the best condition.

RESULTS

RMs Amelia Island classic was as bounteous as ever with a 93% sellthrough rate but the the total gross dropped once more, to $35.716 million, well off the $70 million peak in 2017. Leading the way was a 2003 Ferrari Enzo at $2.782 million which was pretty good money for a Enzo in the early April 2020 market. Top sales included the 1970 Lola T165 at $665k (166% above its estimate), 1904 Cretors Model D Popcorn Wagon at $157k (+96%) and 1962 Fiat 600 Jolly by Ghia at $151k (+89%). Mid estimate sellers were the 1938 Bugatti Type 57 d’Ieteren Cabriolet at a strong $1.655 million, 1963 Ferrari 250GT Lusso at $1.6 mil., 1932 Duesenberg Model J Rollston Stationary Victoria at $1.325 mil., 1987 Porsche 959 Komfort at $1.05 mil. and 2004 Porsche Carrera GT at $786k. Poor sales were the 1967 Jaguar E-Type Series I 4.2 Roadster at $90k (44% below estimate), 1963 Jaguar E-Type Series I FHC at $106k (-39%), 1930 Duesenberg Model J Murphy Convertible Coupe at $1.132 mil. (-19%), 1930 Cadillac V16 Sport Phaeton at $802k (-6%), 1961 Ferrari 250GT Cabriolet Series II at $1.35 mil. (-3%) and 1939 Bugatti Type 57C Gangloff Stelvio at $797k (-1%). The only significant failure was the 1992 Ferrari F40 that failed at a $1 million reported high bid. RM ran with no real headline act in 2020 and had some success with strong sales of million dollar cars and must be applauded.

Todd Nagler acquired the car from the Husko heirs in 2004 and wasted no time in sympathetically returning it to running order. Remarkably, the engine was free and showed good oil pressure, and with some fettling the car was running again after 49 years. The body cleaned up beautifully, with the original interior remaining in good, usable condition, apart from some seat cushions that need to be replaced, and with the paint even still holding a shine; the monogram of “H.E.D.” remains on the doors to this day. The undercarriage has the original, oft-missing belly pan, and the car is still running off its original solid copper fuel tank. Given that the car had been left by Mr. Husko as he bought it from Mr. Dodge, the modifications made to it are original to the first owner—and so the Hispano retains its Duesenberg Model J steering wheel and Ross mechanism (just as Horace Jr. preferred for his use on Dodge racing boats), the Zenith carburetors on a custom manifold, and the second Le Nivex fuel gauge mounted in lieu of a dashboard clock.

He submitted the car to the renowned Scott Sargent for a survey. Though the consignor was initially inclined to conduct a comprehensive restoration, Mr. Sargent noted that the Type 57 retained numerous original components and details, such as the firewall and remnants of original paint on the undercarriage that lent the car a definitive and irreplaceable authenticity. Consequently, to retain the utmost originality, it was decided to limit the restoration to cosmetic considerations and service of the original mechanical components as needed. The interior and top were retrimmed, while the unique coachwork was refinished in a very attractive and distinctive two-tone scheme of black with maroon details. The Bugatti has been fastidiously maintained during the consignor’s conservatorship while being presented and driven at select events over the past few years, including the ABC Maine Fall Rally in September 2016, the Villa d’Este Concorso d’Eleganza in May 2018, and the Audrain Newport Concours in October 2019, where it won the Bugatti touring class. RM Sotheby’s specialist Donnie Gould reports that during a recent test drive the car performed extremely well, showing no smoke upon ignition and bearing a potent exhaust note. The Type 57 is precisely dialed in, displaying acute response of the brakes, throttle, and steering system and overall flawless running condition.

It was eventually purchased from him by the previous owner, under whose ownership it was completely disassembled down to bare metal and freshly restored to original, factory-correct appearance, including the proper original colors and a fresh leather interior. The matching-numbers drivetrain was fully disassembled and rebuilt; the front and rear suspension were also disassembled and inspected, the generator and dynamo rebuilt, and the transmission was resealed. Then the car was presented at the Ferrari 70th Anniversary special display at Casa Ferrari during the 2017 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. It was acquired by the current owner, an esteemed private collector, in August 2018. Most recently, the car won the Excellence in Class award at the 2019 Cavallino Classic Sports Sunday at Mar-a-Lago Concours, in addition to being shown at the 2019 Cincinnati Concours d’Elegance and the prestigious 2019 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Prior to being shown at Pebble Beach, the Ferrari was sent to the award-winning team at RM Auto Restoration in preparation for Pebble Beach judging standards. Work included the installation of a new convertible top, a complete, new exhaust system, the fabrication and installation of a new original-style fuel tank, and gauges repaired to ensure full functionality. New rubber and seals were installed, select wiring was replaced, the front and rear disc calipers were rebuilt, the steering box was adjusted, brake calipers and engine hardware were cad plated, correct-style hose clamps were installed in the engine bay, and lastly, all three carburetors were rebuilt and later tuned on the dyno to ensure they were to proper specification.

J-490 and the remainder of the family collection would eventually pass into the hands of Bob Atwell’s son, Rich, who has faithfully maintained the cars and continued to occasionally display them at national concours d’elegance. After its Pebble Beach appearance, however, the Duesenberg remained on display in the Classic Car Showcase and was not exhibited to the public for nearly 35 years. Only in April 2016 was it successfully acquired by the current owner, a longtime enthusiast and great admirer of this specific car, for his respected private collection, thus ending 51 years in the Atwell family’s hands. In its present ownership, J-490’s mellowed restoration has been extensively freshened, with a new top, trunk covering, and pleated brown leather interior fitted by Dan Kirkpatrick, and the engine has been fully rebuilt by noted Duesenberg specialist Brian Joseph’s Classic & Exotic Service of Troy, Michigan. Following this work, the car was exhibited proudly at the 2018 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, then driven without fault in that year’s Duesenberg Tour through the White Mountains of New Hampshire, continuing the Atwell tradition of both showstopping beauty and driving excellence.
