RM, as they were known way back then, were the first to follow Barrett-Jacksons path and establish a Scottsdale sale and they were successful from the beginning with a mix of pre and post war domestic and exotic classics. Like the rest of the market the early 2010s were a time of exponential growth while the apogee was reached in 2015/6 with $60 million in sales despite sell through rates in the high 80% range. While Ferrari’s and Mercedes had long been the marquee lots on offer, 2019s sale moved slightly sideways with pinnacle offerings of Alfa Romeo’s and a Jaguar alongside multiple Ferrari’s and the ubiquitous Porsches. Ultimately the failure of the unique 250GT Speciale and LaFerrari Aperta meant the results were stubbornly poor compared to previous years although the selection in 2020 looks much better and should be saleable in the current climate.

Pininfarina developed the Ferrari 250GT Series I Cabriolet in early 1957 as Scaglietti were developing the California and both shared a common platform. The commonality didn’t stop there with both being arguably the best looking cabriolet ever built, the California having a sexiness the Cabriolet traded for elegance. Just 40 series I Cabriolets would be built through 1959 when production stopped and 37 had the desirable covered headlights. RM are offering #0913GT, the 25th example built, an Italian delivered example that was upgraded to disc brakes in the late 1960s and later passed to Maltese and British ownerships before heading to America in 1992. A correct 250GT engine was fitted in a 1993 restoration although the original block was repaired and refitted in a 2016 rebuild. Series I Cabriolets were stagnant at around $1.5 – 2 million until circa 2012 when the values jumped to $5 – 7 million and have remained there ever since. As a very good driver example fresh from 20 years with its current owner this is market correct at RMs estimate of $6 – 7 million.

Pagani have become synonymous with outrageous hypercars and the Huayra is no exception with its 700+bhp twin turbo Mercedes V12 engine despite its relatively elegant styling. The Roadster version is even more hardcore and with its carbon fibre chassis, it loses nothing to the Coupe. RM are offering the 42nd of just 100 examples with delivery mileage at $2.5 – 2.7 million and this is still a touch too expensive, perhaps $2.2 – 2.4 million would be market correct.

Ferrari rationalised their range into two main sports cars in 1964 and this coincided with the need to replace multiple aging 250GT models and the issues with homologating the 250LM. With the FIA going back to basics the 275GTB was to be a road car first and foremost and available in GTB Berlinetta and GTS Spider format. The GTB was an incredibly stylish Pininfarina/ Scaglietti collaboration that coupled great speed, comfort and style galore. The original GTBs had a short nose, steel coachwork and a twin cam V12 running triple Webers although soon enough both six carb engines and longnose coachwork became available as did the very rare sporting aluminium cars. The car on offer at RM is a 275GTB/6C thus a standard shortnose GTB with the hotter 6 carb engine and in excellent driver condition after a now 15+ year old restoration. These cars were closer to $3 million just five years ago and now the $1.8 – 2.2 million is market correct.

Ferrari decided to augment the 330GT America 2+2 and 275GTB with a new model that would combine the short chassis of the 275GTB with the engine from the 330GT. This offered a car that was both very quick, offered great handling and was extremely comfortable, Ferrari soon also building the first of 99 GTS Spiders. RMs example was delivered via Chinetti to the USA and it passed through several long term ownerships before the 1990s and has since received a $400k restoration in the mid 2010s. A stunning example in its elegant Grigio Ferro this car is actually very good buying at RMs $1.8 – 2.2 million estimate.

Ferrari’s first model of the classic 250GT series was the 250 Europa GT which featured an all new version of the classic Ferrari ladder chassis and the first variant of the 250 series engine, based on the Lampredi V12 thus launching a legend. This particular car was sold to Chinetti/ NART backer Jan de Vroom and is believed to have been kept in France, the second owner re-imported it into the USA and it eventually passed to Denis Machul who had it restored. Recently repainted in its original livery, this car has been little used since its 1980s restoration and presents very well. Worthy of either continued use or a new restoration, the low end of the $1.5 – 1.7 million estimate would be good buying.

Lamborghini had been making their 350GT and 400GT series for some years when they debuted the Miura in its original P400 form. The improved P400S and finally the SV were available from the early 1970s and these were much revised and improved. RMs example is a SV from 1971 sold new to Italy but soon sold and exported to the USA, a second US owner returned the engine to Italy in 1978 to be upgraded to dry sump format as seen in the SV Jota. Unfortunately the original engine was stolen and another engine was sourced and upgraded to be fitted. Offered in 1970s rebuilt form, it must be noted that Miura have a habit of self immolation and care needs to be taken to ensure that all lines and other sources are checked to ensure this doesn’t happen. For this reason few totally original Miura exist and this one isn’t one post its 1978 rebuild and leaves a quandary since RMs $1.4 – 1.6 million estimate is too expensive for a non matching numbers car to be restored. Fully restored it cannot be worth more than say $1.7 – 1.8 million and a restoration would be easily $300 – 500k so a very careful assessment is needed and either it is a worthy preservation class car or a very low ball offer around $1.2 – 1.3 million might be okay.

Mercedes-Benz had always been synonymous with the finest automobiles and competed with Rolls-Royce and others to provide the worlds elite with bespoke transportation. Production of the SS-Type ended in 1932 and the new 380K with a very large and quite pedestrian steel girder chassis soon debuted although this was soon fitted with the 5 litre straight 8 (500 series) engine from the Nurburg in supercharged 160bhp form to create the 500k. This was available with all manner of factory coachwork from the relatively staid Cabriolet B and C through the sporting 2 seater Cabriolet A and the very exotic Spezial Cabriolet. Within two years the 180bhp 5.4 Litre 540K was available and remained in production until circa 1941 with the same standard works coachwork available. RMs example was built with the standard and very desirable Cabriolet A coachwork for delivery to Germany. A later owner in 1951 sent the car to Hebmuller which changed the upper structure to allow a Coupe hardtop to be fitted. This unique 540K Coupe was soon sold to the USA where it moved through various ownerships before it was purchased by the vendor in 1968. The proud owner entered this fine Mercedes in a 1980 mid west concours and lost to a John Deere tractor! In answer to that slight the 540K was parked in a specially built garage and left there for almost forty years. Offering both the option to fully restore or mechanically rebuild and use as a preservation class contender this 540K is great buying anywhere in its $1 – 1.5 million estimate since even a high class restoration should pay dividends.

It wouldn’t be Scottsdale without a few Mercedes-Benz 300SLs and RM are offering a 1955 Gullwing that was delivered new to New York. Restored in 2013 and little used since this car presents in the iconic Silver Grey over Blue livery and comes complete with Rudge wheels and belly pans. As Gullwings go the $1.15 – 1.3 million estimate is market correct for the quality.

McLarens 720S has bought new levels of performance to the everyday supercar regime and the Senna was a limited edition (of 500) that features the most powerful engine they have made, offering 789bhp. Fitted with bespoke coachwork and offering trackday type performance, most have been sold to collectors at a price similar to that of the P1 hypercar. Now coming to market in large numbers despite being less than two years old these are going to sink pretty quickly. RMs example has just 192 miles showing and was specced with $193k in options (!) with a $1.1 – 1.25 million estimate and this is fully $300k less than the ask 6 months ago so might be okay at the low estimate although I feel $950k might be closer to market correct.

RM seemed to have their Scottsdale sale on track in 2020 with a great and relatively well thought out selection of cars on offer. Ultimately it would appear that there was little real money in the room and the total dropped 20% to just $30.16 million off a respectable 89% sellthrough. The marquee lot was the 1958 Ferrari 250GT Cabriolet Series I but that failed to sell at a reported high bid of $5.5 million, surely enough to see it sell if genuine which it almost certainly wasn’t. This left the 2018 Pagani Huayra Spider topping the charts at $2.37 million (5% below its strong estimate), other strong sales being the 1991 Vector W8 Turbo at $720k (60% above estimate) and the 2008 Bugatti Veyron at $1.105 mil. (+1%). Mid estimate sellers that did well were the 1930 Cadillac V16 Sport Phaeton at $1.105 mil., 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing at $1.27 mil., 2005 Porsche Carrera GT at $786k, 2017 Ford GT at $923k and 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster at $973k. Otherwise it was all downhill with the 1929 Auburn 120 Eight Cabriolet at $52k (-53%), 1971 Mercedes-Benz 300SEL 6.3 at $36k (-51%) and 1949 Kaiser Vagabond at $10k (-50%). Other cars that sold poorly were the 1967 Ferrari 330GTS at $1.71 mil. (-5%), 1971 Lamborghini Miura P400SV at $1.391 mil. (-1%) and 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540K Coupe at $995k (-1%). Finally there were some notable no sales, other than the Ferrari already noted, the 2019 McLaren Senna failed to sell at a reported high bid of $1 mil. which was surely enough, the 1954 Ferrari 250GT Europa at $1.35 mil. and 1965 Ferrari 275GTB/6C at $1.7 mil. If the marquee lot sold this would have been a successful auction, without it RM barely passed muster.
