Bonhams opened a new auction rooms on Bond Street in the centre of London in 2013 and celebrated the opening by hosting a new boutique end of year sale with just 35 lots on offer. That first year they offered the Ecurie Ecosse collection and fetched record amounts for the C-Type and Commer truck among others with a collective $29.6 million in revenue, the following year saw the 1969 Porsche 908/20 lead the way to a $20 million sale and it must be said Bonhams rather took their eyes off the ball as revenues dropped to $13 mil. (2015), $5 mil. (2016) and $11.6 mil. (2017). 2018 does look like a better year for Bonhams although a couple of their lots seem very expensive and of similar prestige they are not nearly in the realm of the cars offered 2013 and 2014.

2019s Bond Street sale is lead by a fine 1961 Aston Martin DB4GT. Aston launched the DB4 in 1957 and it was their first new model in almost a decade and a bit of a revolution. Aston decided to create a race spec variant in 1959 and shortened the wheelbase, fitting a slightly hotter engine and aluminium coachwork to create the DB4GT. Available in both race and road spec the DB4GT was never a match for the Ferrari 250GT Short Wheelbase but remains one of the three iconic road racing GTs. Bonhams example is #0169/R, one of just nine built to lightweight spec. and was sold to Ernest Scragg for his son Phil to race in hillclimbs. #0169/R had one further owner before the vendor purchased it in 1965 and was believed lost for many years before its reveal earlier in 2019. Expert reports that accompany the car note that it is a rare example in honest, original condition and it makes Bonhams estimate of £2 – 3 mil. ($2.62 – 3.93 mil.) seem totally market correct.

Bonhams second marquee lot is a 1929 Alfa Romeo 6C1750SS Zagato Spider at £800k – 1.2 mil. ($1.05 – 1.57 mil.). This Alfa is offered with history from 1948 when it was first registered and notes a 1955 Ford V8 transplant as part of its history. Later on it was fitted with a 1933 6C1750SS engine and Fusi was asked to attribute a chassis number to the car and afforded the number #0312931 which is an authentic number but not correct. A totally correct and quite lovely early Zagato 1750, this is a fabulous car but there are many many questions and a non matching engine which are troubling. For all that the estimate is reasonable indeed at roughly half a clear and genuine example so good buying and ideal for a buyer with the contacts to fully explore its history.

Next up is a 1953 Bentley R-Type Continental Fastback Saloon, really the first true Bentley since Rolls-Royce’ acquisition two decades earlier. An English delivery in right hand drive and with the desirable manual transmission this is a fine example of these wonderfully elegant Grand Turismo and after forty years with one owner was restored within the past three years. Right hand drive is a true limiting factor for these and cars with LHD do sell for 50% more while a relative glut of these has further hampered values. In summary this is a beautiful example but expensive at £900k – 1.1 mil. ($1.2 – 1.4 mil.).
