Worldwide Riyadh – November 23rd, 2019

Al Janadriyyah, Ar Rakb, Riyadh 13614, Saudi Arabia

Worldwide have had relatively contrasting fortunes with either headline catching sales where they offer cars such as Hitlers Mercedes 770k or bleh sales with a selection of dull American classics. Riyadh have held a two month long cultural expo with various shows and events to try and boost tourism and as part of a car show Worldwide are offering both 100+ cars at auction and a car salon with another 200+ cars including a supposedly original Alfa Romeo Monza. Worldwide offer no estimates for any of their lots rather helpfully and the selection on offer is bizarrely American focussed to the extent that one must wonder if it plays well in the middle east. Regardless of my concerns this is a fantastic selection of collectors cars that is well worth a look and likely to be a very profitable outing.

The undoubted highlight of the marquee lots is a 1936 Delahaye 135 Competition with beautiful Figoni et Falaschi Convertible coachwork. Originally delivered to the Wolf’s in Paris, they sent the chassis to Figoni for beautiful, unique coachwork to be built and fitted. Wolf later entered the car for the Rallye de Monte Carlo in 1949 and it was updated with a 135M Competition cylinder block in the same period. This fine car later passed to Jacques Persin and Peter Gogola before it was exported to the USA, firstly to Dr. Earl Heath and then five unnamed owners. Chip Connor owned this car in the 1990s and Hill & Vaughn, Alan Taylor Company and Hjeltness Restorations restored it between 1990 and 1993. A concours winner ever since and very well documented, this is a very rare streamlined Delahaye that would grace any collection. Bonhams offered a similar Guillore bodied Delahaye at Quail in 2019 and if failed to reach its $3.25 – 3.75 million estimate but RM sold a later Figoni bodied example back in 2014 for $6.6 million. This particular example has been on offer for many years, originally failing at Worldwide in 2009 when bid to $1.9 million and has since been offered at $3.5 million in the early 2010s. Its likely a figure around $3.5 – 4.5 million would be market correct but I think it might struggle to do anything over $3 million.

Another highlight is a 2003 Ferrari Enzo which was delivered to the USA and has had three owners who have driven the car just 2,700 miles. Stated to have been well maintained and offered with Classiche, this is a good example of the type. Recent Enzo sales have struggled with many fetching bids barely into the $2 million range and I see no difference with this one, maybe $2 – 2.5 million.

Another fine car on offer is a 1936 Bugatti Type 57C Atalante Roll top that was delivered to Baptifaut in Ventoux Coupe form and passed to the Joussy family in 1937. This Type 57C remained in Paris until at least 1960 when it was with Henri Novo who decided to fit a Series I Atalante Roll top body which he had available and sold it on. This Atalante later passed to the Seydoux collection before the vendor acquired it in 2012 and had it restored to concours condition by Bob Smith. This fine car has since had concours success at Amelia Island and Pebble Beach although it can never become a legitimate original Atalante. As such perhaps $1 – 1.5 million would be reasonable.

Duesenbergs Model J was arguably the grandest of grand American cars in the 1930s and Worldwides example is a unique saloon by Derham. Supplied to Art Kiel in California, this is one of the first Js, delivered with staid Derham coachwork although the great Duesy fell off the Catalina ferry in the mid 1930s and had to be salvaged. As part of the salvage the car needed some repair and Bohmann & Schwartz partially rebodied it for second owner Barbee. This Duesy passed through several collections before it was restored by the Blackhawk Collection. A good and very grand Duesy but not sporty nor particularly beautiful this fits at the lower end of the Duesy value spectrum that runs $750k – 3 million. I would be very surprised if it topped the $1 million mark.

The Ferrari F40 was the second of the Ferrari supercars and featured a traditional tubular chassis with a turbocharged 3 litre V8 for startling performance and its exciting good looks made it an instant classic. Worldwides example was a US new car with just over 3,000 miles from new and is claimed to be a very good example. Even still F40s have struggled in recent months and somewhere around the low millions, perhaps $1.2 – 1.3 mil. would be well sold indeed.
