Simeone Foundation, 6825-31 Norwitch Dr, Philadelphia, PA 19153, United States

With the craze for original cars starting to boom in 2012 Bonhams chose to partner with the Simeone Foundation and host a sale that was intended to focus on these highly collectible cars. Despite the sale often going AWOL and offering cars that would be a better fit elsewhere, some years have seen some fabulous original veteran and vintage cars and they have boosted the totals to decent levels. 2018 wasn’t a great year and with the marquee Bentley 6.5 Litre failing to sell the sale was a slightly glum but of its type, it must still be viewed as pretty successful.

Key – year – sold/offered – gross total (US$) – high sale (US$)

2012 47/60 (81%) $2,536,220 $357,000 1973 Ferrari 365GTB/4
2013 57/65 (83%) $2,737,030 $264,000 1934 Aston Martin Mark II
2014 48/60 (80%) $3,840,290 $1,430,000 1907 American Underslung
2015 57/69 (83%) $2,786,850 $319,000 1936 Wanderer W25K
2016 47/52 (90%) $1,680,175 $121,000 1901 Locomobile Model 5
2017 57/66 (86%) $3,076,604 $1,001,000 1913 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost
2018 35/49 (71%) $2,357,576 $190,400 1936 Bentley 4.25 Litre

2019s marquee lots are lead by a 1930 Bentley Speed Six Tourer Replica. WO Bentley had some success with the 3 litre but the English desires were more towards the staid but capable large Coupes, Saloons and Limousine and the little Bentley couldn’t carry the heavier coachwork. Bentley set to design a larger chassis and frame to which he fitted an all new 6.5 litre straight six engine. Still very much vintage influenced and incredibly solid with some sporting nature, the new 6.5 litre was the inspiration for Bugatti’s “worlds fastest lorries” gag. The example on offer was fitted with Harrrison Saloon coachwork and delivered to the UK, eventually being crudely rebodied as a 2 seat Tourer in the early 1960s and it was exported to the USA in the mid 1960s. David van Schaik owned the car for many years before it was sold to Fred Simeone who had it restored with a new body by D.L. George before it was swapped with Virgil Millett with other Bentleys for a Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa. After many, many years in storage the car was recently recommissioned and it was noticed that the block has a crack in cylinder 5 which will need repair. This Speed Six will need $100-200k, and quite a few months, in deferred maintenance and engine repairs but will be an excellent car for the adventurous collector and offer lots of fun for local shows and tours. Good buying at the $450 – 650k estimate.

Col. Albert Pope established his Pope automobile company to build and sell electric cars but eventually began to build petrol powered cars from 1904. Pope automobiles were built in a number of cities and would have those cities affixed to their nameplates. Bonhams are offering two cars, a 1913 Pope-Hartford Model 33 Touring at $275 – 325k and a 1904 Pope-Toledo 24HP Rear Entrance Tonneau at $120 – 150k. Just 228 examples of the Pope-Hartford 50HP were built and they are excellent, powerful tourers, this one comes with history of the Harrahs and Evans collections and a lovely, relatively recent restoration. Also available is the 1904 Pope-Toledo with the 24hp big four and lovely rear entrance tonneau coachwork, a ex Don Boulton car built from a collection of parts. The 1913 Pope-Hartford is totally market correct while the 1904 Pope-Toledo is either correct or expensive depending on your views on originality.

Woodies are a real niche in the market and the 1941 Chrysler Town & Country Barrel Back Estate is one of the best. Less than 1000 of these cars were built and this example spent 50 years in a museum ensuring it was kept totally original. More recently this lovely Chrysler has been mechanically sorted by Steve Babinsky and presents very well. Now rare the $265 – 325k estimate is correct.

Great brass era speedsters are worth an absolute mint, think Stutz Bearcats and Mercer Raceabouts. The 1914 Marmon Model 48 Speedster has been built on the large 573 cui Model 48 and is one of 343 examples made. While built on an original frame the coachwork is not original but indeed a recently built copy from the very early ’00s. Lots of fun but not particularly collectible the $250 – 300k estimate seems a touch optimistic, perhaps value at around $200k.

All Isotta-Fraschini are brilliant automobiles with a great racing history and really Italys answer to marques such as Rolls-Royce, being of impeccable quality with a sporty touch. The Tipo 8 was arguably the ultimate Isotta with its fine 115hp 7.4 litre straight eight and only ever sold as chassis only. One of two Lancefield Faux Cabriolets built in England, this car has a history that includes fifty years with one owner and 30 years with the second. Offered in superb original condition this isn’t the most glamorous Isotta but then its not priced like one, ideal for any use and a great restoration project at $200 – 250k, great buying.

RESULTS

Bonhams return to Simeone saw 40 of the 49 lots sold for a great 82% sellthrough rate although they only fetched $1.88 million. The gross total is a little misleading because the 1930 Bentley Speed Six was actually sold but no number has been given. Other top sellers were the 1950 Fiat Daniela which fetched $106k (113% above its estimate), 1923 Paige Model 6-70 Touring at $25k (+76%) and 1968 Jaguar E-Type Series I 4.2 Roadster at $53k (+75%). Mid estimate sellers were the 1941 Chrysler Town & Country Barrel Back Estate at $278k, 1931 Isotta – Fraschini Tipo 8A Lancefield Faux Cabriolet at $235k and 1956 Austin-Healey 100M BN2 ‘Le Mans’ Roadster at $140k. Poor sellers were the 1961 Rambler Classic Deluxe at $1,500 (400% below its estimate), 1988 Saab 900 Turbo Convertible at $3,920 (-206%), 1941 Packard 160 Convertible Sedan at $2,464 (-204%), 1963 Chevrolet Corvair Monza Spider at $3,360 (-108%) and 1976 Daimler DS420 Limousine at $8,960 (-101%). Only one no sale stood out, the 1913 Pope-Hartford Model 33 Touring at a reported high bid of $230k. All in all not a bad sale and a better selection of original cars would certainly help to get better results.
