Auburn Auction Park

5536 County Road 11A
Auburn, Indiana

Auburn was a sleepy little backwater for the automobile industry until the mid 1920s when a reorganisation saw star sales man E.L. Cord take over the Auburn automobile company and add Duesenberg soon after. Auburn revolutionised their product range with front wheel drive cars (sold as Cords) and Speedsters along with the indomitable Duesenberg Model J. While the A-C-D range was the byword for style and luxury, the depression saw the end of the company and it went under in 1937 although the legend lived on and the Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg museum was opened in 1974. Such was the importance of the organisation that the city of Auburn chose the car companies logo for itself. The Auburn Auction Park was established by Dean Kruse back in 1971 and was host to the first truly important US auctions, highlights including the three sales to disband the Harrah Collection in the 1980s. Kruse sold the park to RM Auctions who formed the Auctions America subsidiary to run biannual sales at the venue.

The Spring sale is held in conjunction with the AACA and CCCA spring car meet and the weekend includes various festivities that are of any interest to true blue American car collectors. While it is now run as an official RM Sothebys sale, it isn’t like the others in that the lots on offer are mid to low level collectors cars at best with no million cars at all and just one Ferrari and a couple of Porsche’s. Instead there are Cadillacs, Chevvys, Fords and Pontiacs aplenty. Three cars featured heavily in RMs pre sale marketing, the beautiful 1931 Cord L-29 Convertible Sedan, the 1965 Shelby Cobra Replica and the 1966 Batmobile Recreation. Absolutely appropriate for the sale, the Cord L-29 is a gorgeous example of the rare Convertible Sedan, essentially a DHC and looks fantastic in Dark Red and Black. Depending on coachwork these fine cars can sell for anywhere from $200k to 2 million and while this is a relatively common variant, its $225 – 250k estimate seem totally reasonable.

Shelby Cobra’s are one of THE most important US cars, so important that they are the most widely replicated cars and even Shelby continued to produce examples once he knew how profitable they could be. The example on offer is a semi official example with a Shelby chassis number, CSX8036 and was built complete with a 331cui version of the 289cui V8, Tremec 5 speed and has covered just 6,500 miles from new with its one owner. Elegant in Silver, it offers someone a very well built car that while not real is both a fraction of the value and just as usable, difficult to value, the $120 – 130k estimate seems reasonable. Any child of the last five decades will know all about Batman, whether it be the Adam West, Val Kilmer or Christian Bale versions and all of them have featured a car, be it the George Barris built cars of the 1960s or the more futuristic examples of recent times. On offer at Auburn is the original Batmobile #5 and the auction catalogue titles it as a replica but then talks about it being both ex George Barris and genuine, so who knows. The first example made, which featured in the original TV show sold for $4.62 million at Barrett-Jackson in 2015 so #5 is certainly priced as a semi legitimate replica at the $180 – 230k estimate. That said, should the provenance check out, expect the car to sell for much more than the $230k estimate, otherwise it is probably cheaper to build one yourself.

Pre-war cars are relatively plentiful including an Auburn. Highlights are:

  • 1932 Auburn Eight Custom Cabriolet. Est. $90 – 120k. A lovely example, properly priced car with plenty of usability.
  • 1937 Hudson Terraplane 71 Deluxe Utility Coupe. Est. $80 – 100k. Very rare and quite cool. Beautifully restored and possibly unique. Expensive but find another like it.
  • 1937 Cadillac Series 60 Convertible. Est. $110 – 135k. Gorgeous example of a grand full classic. Possibly a touch expensive but not too too much.

Mid century classics abound, some of the highlights are:

  • 1946 Chrysler Town & Country Convertible. Est. $90 – 100k. Lovely example. Priced right, maybe a little cheaply.
  • 1954 Buick Skylark. Est. $110 – 130k. Very rare (1 of 836), good example in nice colours. Cheap for condition.
  • 1955 Mercury Montclair Sun Valley. Est. $90 – 120k. Great example of 50s style. Expensive but not sure where you would find another in this condition.
  • 1956 Chrysler 300B. Est. $105 – 125k. Very rare top quality car with all options available. Priced perhaps a little cheaply.
  • 1956 Sumar Special. Est. $120 – 140k. Ultra cool NASCAR racer with a fantastic history. Well worth a look for a unique car, seems cheap enough.
  • 1956 Austin-Healey 100-4 BN2 Roadster. Est. $110 – 130k. Gorgeous, restored example in top condition. A little expensive but likely cheaper than doing it yourself.
  • 1957 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz Convertible. Est. $80 – 110k. Lovely example of a grand American classic. Priced right, maybe a little cheap.
  • 1957 Ford Thunderbird E Code Convertible. Est. $100 – 125k. A classic Thunderbird in great colours. Worth it.
  • 1959 Cadillac Series 62 Convertible. Est. $100 – 120k. An original example in very good condition, thus quite rare. High end of the market.
  • 1963 Rolls-Royce Phantom V Touring Limousine. Est. $90 – 130k. Be the lord of your own estate or just lord it over the proletariat. Priced right.
  • 1966 Austin-Healey 3000 Mark III. Est. $90 – 110k. Gorgeous colours on a freshly restored example. Possibly a touch expensive for what it is.

There are a few modern collectibles that are desirable and they are an eclectic bunch:

  • 1990 Nissan Fairlady Z Twin Turbo. Est. $23 – 26k. Classic 1990s Japanese car that is now remarkably rare, especially in this condition.
  • 1993 Cadillac Allante Convertible. Est. $20 – 30k. Very clean example. A future classic?
  • 1995 BMW M3 Lightweight. $100 – 120k. 1 of just 125 examples. Good original condition, rare. Price is in the right ballpark.
  • 2001 BMW Z8. $160 – 190k. Classic colours and a good example, just 12,000 miles. Estimate is spot on.
  • 2005 Ferrari 575 Superamerica. Est. $290 – 330k. Sure its low miles and good nick but arent they all. Priced right.
  • 2006 Ford GT. Est. $250 – 300k. Good car, just 3,800 miles. Correctly priced.

Where this sale truly excels is the affordable classics and the highlights are:

  • 1912 Metz Runabout. Est. $25 – 35k. Cool old Brass era car. Cheap for what it is but will take a singular owner.
  • 1920s Sprint car R.F. Blake. Est. $18 – 24k. A particularly unusual and unique Sprint car. Who knows how accurate or original it is and may not matter. Good value.
  • 1920 Dodge Brothers Speedway Special. Est. $40 – 60k. Beautifully restored car, lots of cheap fun.
  • 1926 Lincoln Model L Judkins Coupe. Est. $10 – 20k. An original, interesting, relatively rare classic. Inexpensive classic motoring.
  • 1928 Graham Brothers Truck. Est. $28 – 32k. A truck, it is the mid west after all. Nice livery. Seems a little expensive.
  • 1929 Ford Model A Pickup. Est. $25 – 35k. Noted to have won an award at Greenwich so its in good condition. Price seems fair.
  • 1937 Cord 812 Beverly Sedan. Est. $40 – 60k. Staid but rare example. A little dull but its still a Cord. Priced right.
  • 1938 Pontiac Nascar. Est. $7 – 10k. A very cool recreation of a Nascar style racer. Lots of fun and cheap as chips.
  • 1941 Buick Super Convertible. Est. $75 – 85k. Glamorous and exceptional model of this wartime convertible. Restored to fine condition. Perhaps a little cheap.
  • 1948 Lincoln Continental Club Coupe. Est. $45 – 55k. 1 of 847 examples. Seems a little expensive but these are rare and no harm at the price.
  • 1951 Frazer Manhattan Convertible. Est. $60 – 80k. 1 of just 131 built. Eligible for plenty of just drive the thing. A little expensive but find another.
  • 1953 Buick Estate Wagon. Est. $70 – 80k. Freshly restored example of a woodie wagon. Priced right.
  • 1955 De Soto Fireflite Convertible. Est. $30 – 40k. 1 of just 775 examples. Great colours. Good value for money.

  • 1963 Ford Fairlane 500 Squire. Est. $20 – 30k. Highly kitsch with its “wood” paneling. I like it and its cheap enough.
  • 1963 Studebaker Avanti R2. Est. $25 – 35k. Looks very elegant in Silver over Black. Supercharged version with an Auto trans. Good buying.
  • 1964 Ford Galaxie 500 “Big Bird I” Tribute. Est. $28 – 35k. Unclear whether this is a replica of a famous Nascar or simply a paean to the era. Either way its super cool and $30k isn’t too much….
  • 1968 Ford Bronco. Est. $40 – 50k. My fave truck at the sale. Looks to be in very good condition and priced right.
  • 1968 AMC AMX. Est. $25 – 28k. Gorgeous Red car with the Go Package 343 V8. Potential future collectible.
  • 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1. Est. $45 – 50k. Yellow car with Marti report. Price is in the right ballpark. Check the mechanical components do match though.

  • 1971 AMC Gremlin Racecar. Est. $10 – 20k. A cool if rather utilitarian racecar. Raced at Charlotte, Daytona, and Talladega in ’70, 427cui Chev V8 power. Unique and lots of fun for not much money.  Wont be easy to find a buyer for this but it would be a cool car to track.

RM Sotheby’s second auction from their Auctions America portfolio saw the Canadian powerhouse offer 278 mostly American cars at Auburn in the mid west. With no true marquee lots the total gross was a fairly uninspiring $5.871 million and this was achieved with a sell through rate of 71%. Lest anyone thinks these results are poor, compared to other examples of this style of auction the results are actually market leading, especially the sell through rate and RM should be pretty pleased although it pains me to note that in Monaco they offered less than a third of the number of cars and grossed five and half times the amount. The top seller on the day was the 2006 Ford GT which made a market correct, near top estimate $297k. Other top sellers were the 1931 Cord L-29 at a 7% under estimate $210k, the Batmobile at $165k (-8%), $145k for the BMW Z8 (-9%) and $110k for the 1965 Shelby Cobra 289 (-8%).

The best and worst prices realised on the day were heavily influenced by the sheer number of lots offered at no reserve. Fetching fully 68% less than its estimate, the Laforza made just $3,190, a 1994 Chevvy Blazer sold at $8,800 or 56% below, the Lincoln Club Coupe just $21,450 (-52%), the Ford T-Bucket just $8,800 (-51%) and the 1996 Lincoln Town car just $3k (-50%). Otherwise this type of auction is really not the place to offer a big dollar car, especially exotics although most vendors were smart enough to offer them with a solid reserve. Among the cars that failed were the 1956 Sumar Special, both Porsche 911 Turbos, 1959 Cadillac 62 Convertible, a 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon and the most expensive car at Auburn, the 2005 Ferrari 575 Superamerica. While nothing terribly exciting, the sale bought the full RM experience to an new audience and with a sell through rate as seen, RM will return.

5057 1969 Mercury Cyclone Spoiler 9H15S549179 $35,000.00 $45,000.00/$32,000 -9%

White over Black. 320-hp, 390-cu. in. V-8 engine, SelectShift three-speed automatic transmission, Rare NASCAR homologation example, Factory air conditioning, Accompanied by Marti Report. Mercury worked with two legendary racers, Cale Yarborough and Dan Gurney, to develop the Mercury Cyclone for competition. NASCAR’s homologation rules required 1,000 examples to be built and offered for sale to the public. To celebrate their two most important race teams, Mercury created two distinct liveries for the Cyclone road cars, a white and red theme to celebrate Yarborough and the Wood Brothers and, like the example offered here, a white and blue combination to celebrate Dan Gurney and his All American Racers. Just 54 examples of the Dan Gurney special are known to still exist. This example has been restored to exceptional condition. Powered by a 390-cu. in. V-8 with 320 hp fed to the ground through a SelectShift three-speed automatic transmission, this car is a superb performer and it seems likely that the 120-mph speedometer might not be sufficient. The black vinyl interior and classic blue and white livery have been executed to perfection, and iconic American Racing Torq Thrust wheels with raised white letter tires complete the classic look. Considering that few have survived, even fewer with factory air conditioning, this could very well be the finest extant example of this rare homologation model. Included with the sale is a copy of the Marti report. It will make an ideal addition to any performance car collection.

5059 1956 Sumar Special $120,000.00 $140,000.00/Not sold N/A

Blue and White race car. Well-documented example, Meticulously restored; fabrication work by Steve Moal and Jackie Howerton, Driven by the likes of Pat O’Conner, Bobby Grimm, and Len Sutton, 1957 Trenton, New Jersey, winner, Pat O’Conner, Once owned by Chapman Root, heir to the Coca-Cola bottle design fortune, AACA certified class 24-A. Chapman S. Root, heir to the Coca-Cola bottle design fortune, and his friend Donald E. Smith founded Sumar Racing in Terre Haute, Indiana, in 1952. The name Sumar comes from the wives of the two men, Susan Root and Mary Smith. Their well-known racing cars, the Sumar Specials, were a major force in IndyCar racing. Through 1960, the blue-and-white machines often paced the pack at sanctioned events such as Milwaukee, Langhorne, Phoenix, DuQuoin, Las Vegas, Sacramento, and even Monza, Italy. This Sumar Special was completed in 1956. It was built on a chassis by legendary builder Edward Kuzma and is powered by a strong running example of the legendary 255-cu. in. Offenhauser engine. It is known to have been driven by Pat O’Connor in his 29 September 1957 win at the Trenton 100 in Trenton, New Jersey. This win would turn out to be O’Connor’s last before tragically losing his life the following year at the Indianapolis 500. Following O’Connor’s death, the car’s number was changed from O’Connor’s frequently used #12 to #48 and driven by several other high-profile drivers, including Len Sutton, Bobby Grim, and Gene Hartley, among others. The car finished its career carrying #92. The car was recently restored to an impeccable standard with fabrication work by Steve Moal and Jackie Howerton. It bears the original Sumar Special livery of striking blue with white accents. Period-correct Halibrand wheels complete the classic look. With the other three Sumar Specials housed in the Daytona Museum of Arts and Sciences, it is unlikely that another example will be offered for sale soon, making this an unrepeatable opportunity. It is offered with extensive documentation, period photographs, and is ready to take part in any number of historic racing events.

5060 1920s Sprint car R.F. Blake $18,000.00 $24,000.00 N/A/$13,000 -28%

Built in the 1920s by famous car builder R.F. Blake of Arlington, Virginia, Four-port Riley conversion with Riley carburetors, Very rare example of an early board track racer. Never fully completed, the car remains a time capsule to early racing. This car is a truly amazing time capsule from that era. Built by Arlington, Virginia, builder R.F. Blake and bearing a plate inscribed with his name, the car appears to have never been completed and consequently never competed, which accounts for its survival. Many board track cars, including the car offered here, were built around the ubiquitous Ford four-cylinder engine. At first the Model T block was used, but once the more powerful Model A became available, they were quickly adopted as the engine of choice. This car features Model A power with the highly desirable four-port Riley overhead cam conversion and four Riley single-barrel carburetors. It almost boggles the mind of the modern enthusiast to think about taking this car, with the central gear shifter, almost impossibly narrow cockpit, and essentially no safety equipment, onto the board banking at speeds of 100 mph-plus. Cars like these simply are not found today. They were used up in competition, sacrificed to World War II scrap drives, or rusted away in fields and barns across the country. Thankfully, this example was stored appropriately, retaining a rich patina that cannot be duplicated. A true time capsule, this car tells the tale of the early days of motorsports in a way that few other cars can.

5061 1971 AMC Gremlin Racecar $10,000.00 $20,000.00/$5,500 -45%

White racecar. Unique Superspeedway Modified example, Raced in the 1970s at Charlotte, Daytona, and Talladega, Built by Freeman Treadway, who built stock cars for Richard Petty, Driven by NASCAR star Charlie Glotzbach at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Powered by 427-cu. in. Chevrolet V-8, Documented race history. In the 1970s, Modified racing remained a popular form of “stock car” competition. Though many Modified races remained on the fringes of the rules, the well-organized NASCAR National Modified Championship gave the sport a body of rules from which to draw, helping the sport to standardize. The Modifieds ran at many of the same tracks that the Winston Cup, now the Monster Energy Series Cup, cars did. This included the incredibly fast superspeedways at Talladega and Daytona as well as the slightly shorter tracks like Charlotte. The car offered here also ran at these tracks and represents an interesting era in American racing. This unique AMC Gremlin Super Speedway Modified was built by the late Freeman Treadway, a legendary race car builder who put together Fords for Richard Petty in 1969. The combination of Chevrolet power with the surprisingly aerodynamic AMC Gremlin was a popular and race-winning setup. Several Modified championships were won in Gremlins, including one won by driver Billy Osmun in 1978. Osmun, Joe Severage, and NASCAR legend “Chargin’ Charlie” Glotzbach are all said to have driven this very car. Glotzbach is said to have piloted the car at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The names of all three men adorn the flanks of the car, along with the names of sponsors from the period. Today, the car is offered from a prominent collection and is in excellent overall condition. The Chevrolet 427-cu. in. V-8 engine, backed by a four-speed manual transmission, remains as powerful and raucous as ever. The car wears a no-frills white paint job with a blue painted cockpit area. Stewart Warner gauges, racing seat, and period-correct padded steering wheel complete the spartan interior. With its documented race history, the car would be eligible for a number of different judging classes or, with proper preparation, a return to competition in spirited vintage competition.

The Buick Super’s paintwork provides a superb contrast to its lavish and spotless red interior and black power convertible top. With exceptional amounts of chrome, wide whitewall tires, and highly detailed throughout, the car makes an elegant presentation for anyone lucky enough to admire this car in person. The Buick Super won the coveted AACA First Senior award in 2007. More recently it was chosen, from a field of more than 2,500 entries, to be one of 30 finalists in the 2009 New York Times Classic Car Contest. Driven sparingly, with just 300 miles added to the odometer since the restoration, the car remains in exceptional condition throughout. Few Buick Super convertible coupes survive today—particularly in such fine condition as this fashionable example. Simply put, this may be the finest 1941 Buick Super available.”

Black and Silver over Black leather. Single ownership since new by a prominent Ford collector, Fewer than 3,800 actual miles, Features McIntosh radio, BBS wheels, and painted racing stripes, One of 182 in Mark II Black with full body stripes. The example offered here was ordered in Mark II Black with full body stripes, one of just 182 so-specified in 2006, and has three factory options: the aforementioned racing stripes, forged BBS wheels, and upgraded McIntosh stereo. It was originally shipped to Downtown Ford of Louisville, however, upon arriving at the dealership, the individual who ordered the car declined to take delivery. The GT was purchased by a prominent local Ford collector, with whose family it has now remained since new. The owner notes that it has been driven on average twice a month, and only in the best of weather. It was also displayed at a couple of local shows over the years, including the Louisville Concours d’Elegance at Churchill Downs in 2009. Today it records fewer than 3,800 actual miles and remains in superlative overall condition.

Deep Red and Ash wood over Deep Red. One of 1,830 Series 59 wagons built, Penned by the legendary Harley Earl, One of the last production Woodie wagons, Stunning deep red with mahogany and ash woodwork, Nicely appointed with power steering and brakes and AM radio. Like all of the 1949–1953 Buick wagons, the car offered here was originally bodied by the Ionia Manufacturing Company and bears body number 1881. It has recently been fully restored to a very high standard and is presented in a lovely shade of red with red upholstery and two-tone red and white door panels. The extensive woodwork, done largely in mahogany, is especially beautiful and makes a fine contrast to the red paint. It is nicely appointed with power steering, power brakes, and AM radio, and it currently rides on wide whitewall tires mounted on chromed wire wheels from a Buick Skylark. Accompanying the sale is a photo album which documents the restoration work as well as color samples and a selection of receipts. Also included is an original service manual and jacking equipment. This finely presented wagon is a clear example of why woodies command the attention of collectors worldwide. Powered by the legendary Buick Nailhead V-8, it will make a practical yet enjoyable companion for whatever adventures its new owner embarks on.

5121 1955 Mercury Montclair Sun Valley 55ME32820M $90,000.00 $120,000.00/Not sold N/A

One of just 1,787 Sun Valleys produced, Unique and futuristic Plexiglass half-roof, Concours-quality restoration recently completed. The car offered here is easily one of the finest surviving examples of this limited-production Mercury. It recently underwent a comprehensive restoration to a very high standard and is elegantly finished in a medium shade of yellow with an exceptional black and cream two-tone interior with a dash in yellow to match the body. The Sun Valley’s defining characteristic, the large tinted Plexiglass roof, bathes the entire front seat in natural light, and makes for a very pleasant driving experience without the inherent complications of a convertible top mechanism. A powerful 292-cu. in. V-8 engine, the large amount of chrome and, of course, that characteristic “glass” top, combine to make this a mid-century automobile lover’s dream. As a fine example of an uncommon automobile, this Sun Valley is an ideal choice for participation in AACA events or local shows, or for simply enjoying on the road. Not commonly seen at car shows today, few cars provide the presence and effortless cruising of a mid-’50s Mercury. In period, owning a luxury car such as a Mercury was a sure sign of success and came with a rightly deserved pride of ownership. This is an ideal opportunity to experience that same pride for yourself.
