Mecum Monterey 16th – 19th August 2017

Monterey auctions have always neatly fitted the two segments, Boutique or stock ’em high and sell ’em hard. Along with Russo & Steele, Mecum are members of the latter camp and are its masters. While the sale totals from the first few years were nothing spectacular, Mecum did offer many fabulous cars, the inaugural years Shelby Daytona, one of the best Ferrari Tour de France in 2010 and the greatest Porsche 917/10 extant in 2012. Mecum began to offer ever greater quantities of cars with total lots numbers rising from 239 in 2010 to 743 in 2013. As with any business the drive for growth cannot be achieved without harm to quality and so with Mecum where the focus has been less on competing with the traditional boutique auction houses for the exotic and expensive. Instead they have found themselves at the vanguard of the switch to modern that has re-invigorated the market.

Mecum 2007 – 2017 gross results

2016s top selling lots were typical of that  trend with 7 of the top 10 lots post 2010 automobiles and the lead lot a 2014 Ferrari LaFerrari which sold for $4.7 million. This remains the highest public (non charity) sale for a LaFerrari and while it is arguable that the bounce and the rare colour scheme was worth a large premium over examples, it was still a fantastic result. Likely due to the buoyancy of the segment and the sheer quantity of cars available, Mecum are offering 17 cars with a minimum estimate of over a million and 12 of them are post 1980, 10 are post 2000 so they know their market. Topical offerings will be two Bugatti Veyron, 1 of just 12 Maserati MC12 Corsa, a McLaren P1, 1 of 2 Koenigsegg CCXR Trevita and an Aston Martin Vulcan, that already failed at Mecum Monterey in 2016.

Ferrari fans should note that examples of every recent limited edition are present generally in pairs such as two 16M and two LaFerrari (one in Red and another in White). Single examples of the F12tdf, 599SA Aperta, 458 Speciale and an Enzo. Porsche fans also have much to salivate over including a 911R, three 911GT2 (of the 993, 996 and 997 series) and three 935 (although only one has a proper claim to legitimacy), a Carrera GT and a 959. Classic fans may not see quite the same appeal but there is a Ferrari 275GTB Longnose (#06943), an ex Cunningham Lister Knobbly Jaguar and Henry Fords very own classic Hacker Craft boat. Elsewhere there are immense quantities of hotrods and restomods so rather than recommend attendance or not I can only qualify it as depends on if you like supercars or Americana of not?

Anyone interested in Mecum must be warned that their style of auctioneering entails that, apart from their star lot lists on Friday and Saturday, lot lists are not finalised until the day of sale. AAM intends on keeping you abreast of the latest so we will be updated this page as often as possible but it could be somewhat of a crapshoot.

Mecum returned to Monterey for their 9th annual auction and once again offered the largest selection of cars, motorbikes, boats and ephemera. Mecum concentrated on offering recent collectibles like never before with 22 of their 25 million dollar plus cars on offer made post 1980. Leading the way were two Ferrari LaFerrari, one of which sold at $3.795 million and one (in Bianco/ White) which failed at a reported high bid of $4 million, the Aston Vulcan which failed to garner bids above $2 million for the second consecutive year and the Koenigsegg CCXR which sold at a mid estimate $2.86 million. Further high value exotics were the two Bugatti Veyrons, the Grand Sport Vitesse let got at $2.585 million while the standard 16.4 went home with limited interest anywhere near the $1 million low estimate.

Porsche were a fairly tough sell with none of the 934/5s selling at bids in the $750 – 800k mark which should have been ample to sell cars with stories, the impeccable 962 was reportedly bid up to $2 million which may have been a little light but I cannot see it getting any more, anywhere other than Monterey. While Rothmans liveried works 962s are $3 – 5 million, the better privateer entries should be around the $2 – 3 million mark while the cheapest customer cars might be $750k so the non acceptance of a $2 million bid does make one wonder whether there was any real money in the room, chandeliers are beautiful.  The 993 series 911GT2 failed to sell at a reported $1.3 million high bid which again should have been low but still acceptable while the only Porsche to actually sell was the 959 at a below average $1.045 million.

Aside from the aforementioned LaFerraris (and surely $4 million was enough to buy the white example) Ferrari were polarising. The Enzo may have been ultra low mileage and like new but surely $2.7 million was enough and makes one wonder if it was a genuine bid. Elsewhere the 1.05 million bidded for the 599SA Aperta may have been low but cant have been too far away from getting the job done while both the 458 Speciale Aperta at $682k and F12TdF at $1.375 million may have been around the low estimate but are still high water marks and yet I don’t see all T12TdFs being suddenly worth $1.375 million. Whether that is the bounce and further supply will see the demand curve drop or it is a sign of things to come, only time will tell. The only classic Ferrari in the million dollar club, the 275GTB may have been a little rougher than expected and only made $1.6, failing some $300k below low estimate.

In the other and WTF categories, the two McLarens failed, the P1 at a mid market $2.1 million high bid, where it should definitely have sold and while the MP-12C special edition was rare I don’t get how it can be $950k worth of rare and the high bid of $600k was a failure. Further failures were the Shelby Cobra at $950k, Lister Jaguar with stories at $1.6 million and the ex Henry Ford boat “Evangeline” failed to fire at $700k. Finally one of the few buys of the sale was the Lexus LFA at $357k which is likely a decent long term investment with plenty of potential for cutthrough with the Gen Y demographic.

Any disappointment at seeing their overall gross drop to $34 million will be countered by this being Mecums third best result at Monterey and the drop in total values being mirrored throughout the market. What may concern Mecum is how much money was left on the table, this being either a sign of chandelier bidding OR a lack of control over reserve setting, many of the cars being bidded to levels that they could have been let go at. Just three cars, the Ferrari Enzo and both McLarens could have easily netted them $5 million extra gross if the bids were real. Overall Mecums efforts in Monterey were a pass.
