Worldwide Auctions – 17/8/17

Worldwide Auctions have a decade of experience and host successful sales in Texas and Auburn. 2017 saw Worldwide debut in Scottsdale with 64 of the 82 lots on offer selling for a successful $11.4 million gross. Building on that success they announced their first Monterey auction at Pacific Golf Municipal Golf Links in Pacific Grove. Despite not having any lots with a buy of $2 million or more, Worldwide have some fascinating machinery on offer, notably the beautiful Touring Superleggera Berlinetta Alfa Romeo 6C2500 that failed to sell at Dragone in 2016, a very rare Simca – Gordini GP, a rare early Benz, an ungainly but very rare Delahaye, American built Edwardian Fiat, original Chevrolet Corvette L88 FIA racer and a beautiful but storied BMW.

This last car deserved some explanation since it requires anyone interested to understand and accept lots of believeds and understoods but if correct the car is more than worth the money and comparable to the “Bugefelte” that sold at RMs Monaco sale in ’12. It is claimed that it was one of a handful that was sent to Touring Superleggera where they bodied it like the works racers although this particular car was used for fast road driving only. At some later date the car and the bodywork were separated although it is claimed that the body was later purchased from a later owner who had fitted it to a special. Re-united it was eventually restored by Fran Roxas and all is hunky dory although one might want to check out the documents for what is one of the most beautiful lots offered in recent times.

Worldwide were never going to be able to compete with the three big players in the boutique auction segment but they will make a debut with an eclectic catalog full of desirable collectors cars and if anyone has spare time on the Thursday they should cruise along for a look.

Year/ Sold/ Offered/ (%)/ Gross sale/ Top Sale/ Details

2017 46/74 (62%) $6,762,250 $605,000 1939 BMW 328

Worldwide Auctioneers first sale on the Peninsular saw them make a valiant attempt to hold a boutique auction. With an interesting selection of classic cars they offered something a little unusual and garnered plenty of interest although real bids were light on the ground. The sale was certainly hampered by two of the three big lots for completely different reasons, the BMW selling at $550k (60% below low estimate) with buyers likely concerned whether the car is original or a rebody and the Alfa 6C2500 which failed to garner much attention at Dragone last year. As for the third star lot, the Delahaye, the car was rather ill-proportioned and not a par on the Figoni bodied examples and the car stalled at a $1.2 versus the $1.7 lower estimate. Both the Delahaye and the Alfa which failed at a $1.3 million high bid versus the $1.8 million low estimate could have been let go at the amount bidded which while 20 – 30% below market wouldn’t have been to low to see it sold.

When looking through the entire sales result list only 46 of the 74 cars on offer actually sold and 32 examples of those that sold did so below low estimate. Aside from the BMW that sold at 60% below L/E other examples that sold below estimate were the Fiat Tipo 56 at $495k (17% below L/E) and a 1929 Talbot at $47k (52% below estimate). Indeed only three cars sold above estimate and none were particularly high value, indeed the only car that sold well was the Packard 1507 and that sold a mid  estimate $467k. Various auctions have tried to find a niche and establish themselves in the Monterey calendar and the last that was truly successful was Mecum while several more have come and gone like Rick Cole and Kruse. Worldwide may have had limited success but it would be a shame if this remains a one off, Worldwide did bring a selection of interesting consignments and do offer some colour to the market.

Worldwide are not known for their haste with posting results so the following is taken from reported results which may be subject to revision.
