Artcurial · Auctions and Auction house

Artcurial Paris April 8th 2018

Artcurial grew out of the merger between Hevre Poulain and others into a unified auction house that offers auctions in most major marketplaces. They soon managed to take on the role as the official Retromobile auction partner and have taken that sale to new heights with successes including the World record setting Ferrari 335S in 2016. Further sales are hosted in Paris sporadically and so it is with this boutique offering of 69 automobiles and while its fair to note the quality level is not what is seen in February’s Retromobile sale, it is still a inimitable selection of fascinating automobiles.

Oddly for Artcurial there are very few pre war automobiles (just 3) and only two stand out. These are:

  • 1927 Bugatti Type 43 Grand Sport. Est. €500 – 800k/ $615 – 984k. Yes its a real Bugatti but its no Type 43. As such its expensive for a replica but perhaps 20 – 30% of the real thing and likely accepted at most events so on the balance of probabilities its good buying at the price.
  • 1939 Alfa Romeo 6C2500SS Spider. Est. €200 – 300k/ $246 – 369k. As with the above but more so. A true bitsa based on a legit chassis from a saloon with various proper parts but history only post 1980s build, hard to explain. Its gorgeous and valued at 10% of the original so probably okay but unsure whether its eligible for anything so a total risk.

Like every Artcurial sale there are a significant quantity of fascinating pan European mid century classics. Highlights include:

    • 1950 Bristol 401. Est. €40 – 60k/ $49 – 74k. Very rare BMW based classic with much of interest but a little stolid. Priced right.
    • 1957 Facel Vega FV4. Est. €170 – 230k/ $209 – 283k. Big, fast and elegant saloon, the French equivalent of the Bentley Continental. Worth every cent.
    • 1957 DB HBR5. Est. €50 – 70k/ $61 – 86k. Actually ran the Tour de France in ’58, perhaps the cheapest way to do events like the Le Mans classic.
    • 1961 Porsche 356 BT5 Cabriolet. Est. €160 – 210k/$197 – 258k. A rare variant of the classic Porsche 356, excellent, restored condition and priced right.
    • 1961 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Veloce. Est. €70 – 120k/ $86 – 148k. A full race version and a gorgeous design full stop. Expensive but impossible  to build for less.
    • 1962 Fiat 600D Jolly Beach car. Est. €45 – 65k/ $55 – 79k. Good example of a fun toy. Priced right.
    • 1968 Aston Martin DB6 Volante. Est. €550 – 750k/ $676 – 922k. Priced about right for a good but not pristine example that might need megabucks spent on it one day.
    • 1972 Maserati Ghibli 4.9 Litre SS. Est. €200 – 250k/ $246 – 307k. A good, attractive example. Probably too expensive for the quality but not unreasonably so.

As with all contemporary sales there is

a significant selection of modern collectibles including the marquee lot, a 1989 Ferrari F40, and the following highlights:

  • 19
  • 73 Lamborghini Uracco P-250S. Est. €80 – 100k/ $98 – 123k. Rare 1970s/80s Italian auto, good but not great condition and priced accordingly. A future collectible.
  • 1989 Ferrari F40. Est. €750 – 850k/ $922k – 1.045 mil. Good example with high mileage, priced right, especially the low end of the estimate range.
  • 1998 Porsche 911/993 Turbo S. Est. €200 – 300k/ $246 – 369k. Excellent condition although very high mileage. Priced right for the mileage.

As with every Artcurial sale there is a wonderful collection of eclectic cheap collectibles. Highlights are:

  • 1953 Citroen 11BL. Est. €25 – 35k/ $31 – 43k. Perfect for any Francophile, 1 of just 3 survivors of the type and in good condition. Priced right.
  • 1979 Peugeot 504 Cabriolet. Est. €15 – 25k/ $18 – 31k. Restored example of an elegant drophead. Its still just a Peugeot but an ideal first classic.
  • 1982 Range Rover Rallye-Raid. Est. €25 – 35k/ $31 – 43k. Possibly unique and eligible for rally and cross country events. If you have a use for it, its cheap as.
  • 1988 Lancia Delta HF Integrale 8 Soupapes. Est. €30 – 40k/ $37 – 49k. Super collectible and in exceptional condition. Future collectible and priced right.
  • 1989 Porsche 928 Club Sport. Est. €30 – 50k/ $40 – 61k. 1 of just 19 of these rare semi race spec 928s, well worth a look for a car in super rough condition. Ideal restoration candidate. Future collectible.
  • 1996 Renault Spider. Est. €40 – 60k/ $50 – 74k. Beautiful example of a rare French Sports racer. Ideal future investment.
  • 2003 Renault Clio V6 Phase I. Est. €35 – 55k/ $43 – 68k. Rare mid engined exotic. Straight out of Grand Turismo 2 (was it 3?). Rare and super collectible, priced right.

All in all a fun little sale and worth a gander if interested in European collectibles. Don the stripy jumper, light up a Gauloises, rip off some Batard, pour a Pastis and enjoy.

Results

Artcurial were likely hoping for good things with an eclectic selection of interesting cars but it wasn’t to be, just €2,557,976 ($3.13 million) worth of cars changing hands. This was achieved on 46 cars selling out of the 69 offered (67%). The poor results were due to just one of their marquee lots actually selling, the figurehead F40 failing at $824k, Aston DB6 at $609k, Bugatti Type 43 at $430k etc. Of those that did sell by far the highest result was for the Alfa Romeo 6C2500SS that fetched €274k ($335k) and while it wasn’t original, someone got a beautiful car at a good price. The other cars that sold well were the 1961 Porsche 356 BT5 Cabriolet at a mid estimate €192k ($235k), the 1970 Lamborghini Espada at €110k ($134k) and the delightful little Panhard HBR5 at €54k ($66k).

A fair few cars sold below estimate, notably the Bristol 401 at 23% under €31k ($38k), Lamborghini Uracco at a bargain -20% €64k ($78k) and the interesting Porsche 928 ClubSport at, -19%, €24k ($30k). A very rare 1968 Citroen DS21 Cabriolet did manage to get away at a -2% €127k ($156k). On the other hand a few cars did sell well, notably the 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280SL Pagoda at 4% over estimate €83k ($102k), an exceptional Peugeot 205GTi Griffe at €49k ($60k) and the Porsche tractor for a whopping €30k ($36k) which was 49% more than they estimated it at. All in all a pretty poor sale and Artcurial have their work cut out to rectify their current issues before the Le Mans sale in July.
