Bonhams Goodwood Members Meeting – March 18th

Bonhams have hosted auctions in conjunction with the Goodwood Festival of Speed since the late 1990s and when the Revival began they were there from year 1. The Members Meeting was traditionally a closed event for Members but recently it became the third event, actually the first since its in mid March but hey. Unlike the other two sales, Bonhams aimed this one at the audience so there are plenty of Goodwood worthy race cars, some fascinating project cars and a small selection of true classics. Always capable of $7 – 9 million in gross sales on the back of 92 sales, this year Bonhams Goodwood Members Meeting is offering 109 examples and will likely be hoping for some growth.

Key – Date – Sold/Offered/(%) – Gross total US$ – High sale US$

21/3/15 52/64 (81%) $7,528,763.00 $965,458.00 1939 Frazer-Nash 328
20/3/16 78/92 (85%) $8,531,426.00 $1,219,070.00 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing
19/3/17 69/87 (87%) $6,952,135 $681,866 1961 Aston Martin DP212 Replica

18/3/18 76/106 (72%) $5,058,059 $284,649 1958 AC Ace

2018s sale was to have been headlined by an essentially brand new 2017 Ferrari F12 TDf that they estimated at $1.1 – 1.4 million although it was one of three cars to be withdrawn before the sale. The withdrawal of the one and only marquee lot must hurt the sales success and $1.4 million is a large hole in a sale with this average gross although the other two wont have nearly the same effect. This leaves the Goodwoodista Brin Edwards collection of Lagonda and Lancia and the Lamborghini 400GT as the headliners.

The Lamborghini 400GT 2+2 was the successor to the inaugural 350GT2+2 and was an evolution rather than a new car. Offering luxurious appointments, it was still based on the Dallara designed chassis, Bizzarini designed 320bhp 4 litre V12 and Touring coachwork, it was an epic luxury Sportscar. Just 247 examples were built between 1966 and 1968, just four of which were imported by the UK concessionaire and they were converted by classic British coachbuilders Hooper & co. into RHD. This particular example was sold new to Sir Paul McCartney, of that little Liverpool band the Beetles fame and has remained in the UK, apart from a stint in Hong Kong and presents in “exceptional” condition. Bonhams have offered an estimate of £400 – 500k ($560 – 700k) and with the celebrity ownership and great condition, it wouldn’t surprise to see it go far higher than that. It deserves too.

Brin Edwards is a well known English classic racer who raced his Lagonda M45 Tourer throughout the UK, and across the channel, and became well known for his exquisite collection of Lancia. After his recent passing the Edwards family consigned his collection to this sale and while many have been stored and have needs, it remains that these are rare opportunities to buy some great classics. Certainly ideal for those wanting to take on a project. Highlights include:

  • 1928 Lancia Lambda Farina Faux Cabriolet – Est. £30 – 40k ($42 – 56k), gorgeous pre war Coupe, requires recommissioning, invite to most concours and pretty cheap
  • 1928 Lancia Lambda 8th Series Tourer – Est. £50 – 60k ($70 – 84k), the open brethren of the above and exactly like that one, good buying for the pre wars concours fan
  • 1931 Lancia Lambda 8th Series Saloon – Est. £60 – 80k ($84 – 119k), one for the whole family, make it a set, still good buying but you need to be adventurous
  • 1933 Lagona M45 Tourer – Est. £80 – 100k ($110 – 140k), looks gorgeous in Silver with plenty to recommend it. Not exactly authentic but it doesnt really matter, lots of fun at the money
  • 1935 Lagonda M45 Pillarless Saloon – Est. £50 – 60k ($70 – 84k), Black and Cream and possibly in good condition except for the overheated engine, adventurous buyers take note, could be cheap to fix and a bargain buy, then again…….
  • 1956 Lancia Aurelia B24S Convertible – Est. £200 – 250k ($280 – 350k), Restoration project, said to be 90% finished and a good buy for someone willing to complete it.
  • 1979 Lancia Stratos Replica – Est £18 – 22k ($25 – 31k), no collector car but lots of fun for someone looking for a toy.
  • 1984 Lancia Beta VX Coupe – Est. £8 – 10k ($11 – 14k), a rare example of a car that could appeal as a first classic, its usable, fun, fast enough and relatively easy to use.

Pre war cars were good sellers at Bonhams Retromobile sale and apart from those cars already mentioned, Bonhams are offering a good selection. Highlights include:

  • 1921 Vauxhall 30-98 E-Type Velox Tourer – Est. £180 – 220k ($250 – 310k), the Velox is one of premier Edwardian Sporting cars and modern beyond its years. Not perfect but still a bloody nice car, priced right.
  • 1936 Talbot BG110 Vanden Plas Tourer – Est. £100 – 130k ($140 – 180k), a very nice example with very rare Vanden Plas coachwork, would be three times this if a Bentley. Good buying.
  • 1937 Alvis 4.3 litre Short Chassis Tourer – Est. £420 – 480k ($590 – 670k), another very nice Vanden Plas design. Very rare and expensive but still market priced.

Mid century collectibles are still where the money is at but at this sale they are an eclectic bunch and offer some interesting buying. Highlights include:

  • 1949 Connaught L2 Sports Racer. Est – £50 – 60k ($70 – 84k), Very rare (1 of 6) and eligible for everything, restored example. Good buying
  • 1949 Land Rover 4×4 Station Wagon. Est – £30 – 40k ($42 – 56k), a very rare Landrover and likely a good long term buy.
  • 1963 Jaguar E-Type Series I 3.8 Roadster. Est – £130 – 160k ($180 – 220k). Likely not perfect but a very good looking example and good buying at this price.
  • 1965 Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GTA. Est – £170 – 220k ($240 – 310k). Said to be original and with British race history but this must be confirmed due to the qty of fakes out there. If real, good buying since its race ready, if not BEWARE. A spare engine is also offered.
  • 1967 Aston Martin DB6. Est – £160 – 200k ($220 – 280k). Little history given so needs to be checked out but a DB4 would be double and a DB5 triple so good buying.
  • 1970 Fiat-Abarth 595SS Saloon. Est – £50 – 70k ($70 – 98). Very rare little car (1 of 20?), lots of fun and eligible for all sorts of events and concours. Expensive for a 500 but find another?
  • 1974 Ferrari 246GTS Dino. Est. £375 – 425k ($520 – 590k), love Nero example, ex Nick Mason (Pink Floyd fame). Expensive but worth it.

Goodwood Members Meeting is really not the place to sell modern exotics and few excite. Highlights are:

  • 2003 Ferrari 360 Challenge. Est – £60 – 80k ($84 – 110k). A fun track toy, supposedly in good condition and ready to go racing. No harm at this amount.
  • 2014 Bentley Continental GT3-R. Est – £165 – 185k. Very rare and like new. A rare modern collectible thats not overpriced.

Where this sale excels is offering cars for every man and affordable classics are a rich selection at this sale:

  • 1963 Heinkel Trojan 200 Microcar. Est – £10 – 14k ($14 – 20k). Restored and lots of fun (FOR 1). Priced about right.
  • 1963 Rolls-Royce Phantom V Limousine. Est – £10 – 15k ($14 – 21). A car for swanning around the estate and at this price even the council estate. An unknown quantity but priced cheaply, so no real harm
  • 1975 Bristol 411 Series IV Sports Saloon. Est – £22 – 26k. As traditional as warm beer and wet English summers. Nothing glamorous but a classy cruiser for not too much money.
  • 1982 Mercedes-Benz 608D Vehicle Transporter. Est – £25 – 35k ($35 – 49k), an incredibly cool and highly usable transporter. You will be the only one in the paddock with this and once restored it will be the perfect match for a Mercedes or Porsche.
  • 1984 AC 3000ME. Est – £8 – 12k ($11 – 17k). Very rare and a lot of fun for the money, why not?
  • 1996 Mercedes-Benz 500SL Convertible. Est – £8 – 11k ($11 – 15k). A lot of class for not much money. Could be expensive going forward but otherwise go for it.
  • 2000 BMW M5. Est – £20 – 30k ($28 – 42k). These will be a full collectible one day so why not be an early adopter….,

All in all, a fun event, fun auction and lots of fun cars.

RESULTS

A highly traditional race meet was genuinely the wrong place to offer a modern car such as the 2016 Ferrari F12TDf although the withdrawal of the lot robbed the sale of much of its momentum. There was still a decent selection of traditional lots and much to delight any attendee at both the event and the sale but the weather would have deterred many from going outside, much less attending the Members Meeting with blizzard like conditions predicted for the weekend. Unfortunately the three big lots that remained available all failed to sell, the Alvis 4.3 failing at $548k against a $590 – 675k estimate, ex Nick Mason Ferrari 246GT at $477k against a $526 – 597k estimate and Lamborghini 400GT 2+2 at $505k against a $562 – 703k estimate.

Those no sales aside, the top selling lot was the 1958 AC Ace which fetched £204k ($285k) and that was no less than 70% over estimate and an excellent result. Other excellent results were the AC 16HP at £40k ($55k) or 231% over estimate, Rolls-Royce Phantom V at £34k ($48k) or 129% over estimate and Lancia Fulvia SZ at £16k ($22k) or 101% over.  A few cars sold in the mid estimate range and they include the 1968 Fiat Dino 2.0 at £100k ($140k), Mercedes 190SL Cabriolet at £110k ($154k), Talbot BG110 at £113k ($158k), 1959 Aston Martin DB Mark III at £130k ($182k), Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GTA at £181k ($252k) and Aston Martin DB6 at £186k ($260k).

Elsewhere the presence of multiple No Reserve examples encouraged some very low prices none more so than £747 ($1k) for a Lancia Ardea, or 62% below estimate, other cheap cars on offer were the Mercedes CL600, plenty of luxury for just £3,450 ($5k) or 57% below and the Jaguar E-Type Series II Coupe at £16,041 ($22k) or 43% below estimate. Other than the aforementioned marquee lots a few other no sales included the 1921 Vauxhall 30-98, Attila Chevrolet Mark 3, Bentley Continental GT3-R and Jaguar SS100. Despite the lack of pizzazz  and the poor 72% sell through rate the sale still managed to gross $5 million and while that may have been 37% below 2017s results and while that must be recorded as poor it shouldn’t be discouraging in the light of other 2018 results.
