Bonhams became the third major auction house to offer an auction in conjunction with the Amelia Island concours and in effect made the Amelia Island auction week a real thing. From the very beginning, Bonhams began to offer the very best in pre and post war collectors cars with a Preservation class Cord L-29 and a unique Bugatti Type 57SC Vanden Plas Tourer. 2016s results were boosted by the $9.7 million Bugatti and 2017s sale was something of a dip with only a rather weak Talbot-Lago and the 1955 Ferrari 250GT Europa on offer, Bonhams having reasonable success on the way to a $10.7 million gross.

Date – sold/offered/% – Gross Total (US$) – High sale (US$)

12/03/2015 64/84 (76%) $13,796,200 $1,760,000 1930 Cord L-29
10/03/2016 65/95 (68%) $27,461,250 $9,735,000 1937 Bugatti Type 57S Vanden Plas DHC
9/03/2017 74/86 (86%) $10,716,600 $2,227,500 1955 Ferrari 250GT Europa

8/3/2018 88/104 (84%) $13,177,679 $1,710,000 2015 McLaren P1

The marquee lots at Bonhams Amelia Island in 2018 are neither the most exciting nor the most expensive, instead they have managed to secure a collection of three Lincoln Zephyr’s. The Zephyr is a rather underrated car with an exotic if troublesome V12 that somewhat bridges the pre and post war era’s and Bonhams are offering a 1939, 1940 and 1942, all noted to be restored and estimated at $150 – 225k.

As always there is an impressive collection of pre-war cars. Highlights include:

  • 1899 Panhard-Levassor 6HP Wagonette. $250,000 – 350,000. Exquisite, very early automobile. Ideal for the London to Brighton. Priced right.
  • 1912 Thomas-Flyer Model MC 6-40 Roadster. $175,000 – 225,000. Great restored example. Amelia Island award winner.  Pretty cheap for what it is.
  • 1913 American Underslung Model 34A Tourist. $200,000 – 275,000. Incredibly rare and roughly 80% cheaper than a sportier example. Cheap as chips.
  • 1919 Pierce-Arrow Series 51 4 pass Touring. $250,000 – 350,000. Very rare and very cool. A full classic if ever there was one. Well worth the money.
  • 1928 Minerva AK Town Car. $750,000 – 850,000. A unique and extraordinary car, ideal for any concours. Expensive but find another.
  • 1933 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Continental DHC. $550,000 – 650,000. Unique car built for Barbara Huttons husband, Price Alexis Mdivani, stunning example. Irreplacable, got to consider it remarkably cheap.
  • 1936 Horch 853 Roadster. $700,000 – $900,000. Another Horch replica. Cheaper than the real thing but what would you use it for. Seems expensive for a fake.

Fabulous pre war exotics

Bonhams other strong point is offering mid century classics and while a few of the usual suspects are missing, no Gullwing or early Ferrari, there are plenty to interest.

  • 1947 Delahaye 135MS Coupe. $400,000 – 500,000. Unique Pinin Farina coachwork, not exactly beautiful but very interesting and concours worthy, a touch expensive.
  • 1950 Delahaye 135M Cabriolet. $300,000 – $400,000. Gorgeous Saoutchik coachwork. Fascinating car. Ideal concours car. Seems a little cheap.
  • 1952 Kurtis KK4000. $275,000 – 350,000. Ex Indy ’52 – 56. Said to be highly original. Great value, so long as you can give it a purpose.
  • 1957 Porsche 356A 1600 Speedster. $450,000 – 550,000. Superb example. Looks great in Aquamarine Blue and after a recent restoration, entirely reasonable price wise.
  • 1959 Porsche 356A Carrera 1600GS Coupe. $650,000 – 750,000. A matching numbers car with bags of history. Market priced.
  • 1968 Ferrari 330GTC. $550,000 – 750,000. An above average example noted to have been refurbished by RM. Priced for condition 2 – 3 so if checks out, worth it.
  • 1973 Ferrari 365GTS/4. $2,400,000 – 2,700,000. A gorgeous example in Rosso Chiaro. Exceptional and priced right for the quality.

Legendary classics

As everywhere in 2018, modern collectibles abound. Highlights include:

  • 1992 Porsche 911/964 Turbo. $275,000 – 325,000. Unique car with just 720 miles from new. Seems reasonable and an unrepeatable opportunity.
  • 1995 Porsche 911/993 Carrera RS 3.8. $350,000 – 450,000. A great, rare example of the type. Market priced although check whether its show and display or actually registable.
  • 1996 Porsche 911/993 GT2. $1,100,000 – 1,400,000. Oh no, not another GT2. Ex Japan too. Market correct price. First of three GT2 on offer at Amelia.
  • 2015 McLaren P1. $1,800,000 – 2,000,000. Perhaps $200k too high but still within market priced for a like new car.

Yellow terror at Bonhams

One area where Bonhams excel is affordable classics. Highlights include:

  • 1927 Georges Irat Model A Cabriolet. $150,000 – 200,000. Beautiful Pourtout coachwork. Stunning condition. Cheap compared to anything else and eligible for every event.
  • 1942 Cadillac Series 75 Imperial Limousine. $40,000 – 55,000. Stunning example. Cheap enough at the estimate.
  • 1959 Kellison J-4R Coupe. $35,000 – 55,000. The ultimate track day toy. 500bhp on tap. Little investment value but doesn’t matter at the price.
  • 1961 Porsche Junior 108 Tractor. $45,000 – 65,000. Great accessory for any Porsche collection. Beautiful condition. Not too expensive.
  • 1961 Facel Vega HK500 Coupe. $150,000 – 200,000. Beautiful example in Silver over Red. Market price.
  • 1964 Porsche 356C Outlaw Coupe. $100,000 – 150,000. Proper Outlaw, very cool. 236bhp 911 engine fitted!
  • 1966 Shelby GT350H Fastback. $90,000 – 125,000. Restored and upgraded as necessary. Fun car and priced right.
  • 1983 Renault 5 Turbo II. $120,000 – 150,000. Very rare in the USA. Expensive when new, more so now. Priced about right.
  • 1984 Land Rover Defender 110 Pickup. $35,000 – $45,000. Rare in the USA, noted to be in nice condition. These last forever and provide an alternative to a Landcruiser.
  • 2009 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Competition Sport Edition. $50,000 – 65,000. Lots of fun for very little cash. Just 40 miles from new. 1 of just 20 examples. Priced right.

Something for everyone, Georges Irat, Kellison and Renault

Bonhams may not have the most expensive nor the most hyped but they do have something for every collector. Bravo.

Results

Bonhams managed a small increase in overall gross with $13.177 million in sales although like the other Amelia Island sales there was plenty of turbulence. Bonhams marquee lot was the Daytona Spider which was bid to $2.2 million and announced sold on the block although it was soon expunged with much debate as to whether it was a legitimate bid or some other calamity. When the Daytona Spider failed, the McLaren P1 became the top seller at $1.71 million which was 5% below estimate but still market correct. Otherwise most of the top sales were below market amounts, Porsche 356A Carrera at $632k (3% below), Ferrari 330GTC at $545,100 (1% below), Horch 853 Roadster at $544k (22% below) and Rolls-Royce Phantom II at $465k (15% below).

Plenty of lots sold well below their estimates including the 1942 Lincoln Zephyr at $89k (48% below), Porsche Junior Tractor at $25k (44%), Citroen SM at $34k (44%), 1940 Lincoln Zephyr at $87k (41%)  and Lotus Mark VI at $30k (40%). A small selection of cars sold above their estimate including the Dodge Viper GTS-R at $90k (127% above), Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport at $39k (57%), Viper SRT-10 at $64k (42%) and Viper RT/10 at $43k (42%). Other than the Daytona Spider there were plenty of no sales including the Minerva at $550k (against a $750 – 950k estimate), Porsche 911GT2 at $880k (1.1 – 1.4 million) and Kurtis KK4000 that failed at $210k (275 – 325k). Bonhams did better than some others and their 84% sell through rate certainly wasn’t too bad but they would have hoped for better.

Roll on Monaco where they are offering two ex Ayrton Senna Grand Prix cars and the unique Ferrari 625TF……..
