RM Sotheby’s joined Artcurial and Bonhams when they hosted their first sale in Paris and offering a fine Australian collection including a Jaguar D-Type they managed to turn a 79% sellthrough rate into a $21 million gross. Following sales saw RM turn from hosting a boutique sale into a smaller version of their US extravaganza’s. Despite offering some fairly humdrum lots, last years sale offered a Porsche 917/10 and Alfa Romeo Tipo B, both examples of the greatest racing cars ever made and while the former failed to sell, the later did make a relatively strong $4.2 million. Whatever the style or relative success of the auction, RM Sotheby’s continue to offer an interesting selection of the worlds finest autombiles.

Key – Year – sold/ offered/ % – Gross total US$ – Top sale US$

2017 60/77 (78%) $29,517,056 $4,191,264 1934 Alfa Romeo Tipo B

2018 69/83 (83%) $29,142,514 $4,079,238 2017 Bugatti Chiron

RM Sothebys consignments contain the usual spread of collectibles ranging from a selection of 1920s Bugatti Type 35 Grand Prix car through to a 2017 Bugatti Chiron. Now while the Bugatti might be fun, it lacks originality and it would be hard to recommend it as a collector car and the rest of the pre-war lots simply don’t wow. That being said the real focus of this sale is the mid century and modern classics and there is plenty to be excited about in those segments.

Mid century collectibles include;

  • 1953 Ferrari 166MM/53 Ferrari Spider. Est. €3.7 – 4.5 million/ $4.59 – 5.58 million. 1 of 13 and believed the only one bodied by Ferrari. Raced successfully by Alberico Cacciari and starred in the Kirk Douglass film “The Racers”. Noted to be highly original so while its expensive, its still going to be a great car to own and a fairly safe investment
  • 1954 Osca 2000S Morelli Barchetta. Est. €875 – 975k/ US$1.08 – 1.21 million. 1 of just 5 examples built, a great little racer by the Maserati bros. An interesting provenance, would benefit from more explanation of what was found in Argentina and remains part of the current #2005. A bit of a risk but an entry to any event if it checks out
  • 1954 Mercedes-Benz 300S Roadster. Est. €625 – 675k/ US$775 – 837k. Just 54 of these cars were built and they combine the 300SL engine with uber glamorous and luxurious bodywork and interior, fairly estimated.
  • 1958 BMW 507 Roadster Series II. Es.t €1.6 – 1.8 million/ US$1.98 – 2.23 million. Just two owners from new and always well maintained and not badly priced compared to other 507s. Looks like a lovely example
  • 1958 Triumph TR3A Roadster. Est. €160 – 180k/ US$198 – 223k. An interesting car, part of the works rally team, only survivor. Eligible for many events but I struggle to call it good looking
  • 1963 Maserati 3500GT Vignale Spider. Est. €700 – 800k/ US$868 – 992. Priced a touch high but noted to be very nice. These are fantastic cars and whether its expensive or not you wont regret it
  • 1965 Iso Grifo A3/C. Est. €2.5 – 3 million/ US$3.1 – 3.72 million. Ex. Johnny Hallyday, a French hero and thus expensive but noted to be original and one of very few with a clear provenance. Likely worth it
  • 1965 Ferrari 275GTB Alloy Longnose. Est. €2.4 – 2.8 million/ US$2.98 – 3.47 million. Gorgeous Silver/ Argento example with a GTO Engineering restoration. These were $3 million + back in 2015, circa $2 million in early 2017 and heading back to $3 million+ in late 2017 so why not ask that. It does tick ALL the boxes
  • 1967 Maserati Mistral 4000 Spider. Est. €750 – 850k/ US$930k – 1.05 million. 1 of just 37 examples built. Stunning and market priced
  • 1968 Bizzarrini 1900GT Europa. Est. €250 – 300k/ US$310 – 372k. Market priced for a very rare car. Not sure I can recommend it with its Opel engine but if its what you desire……
  • 1970 Maserati Ghibli Spider. Est. €700 – 800k/ US$868 – 992k. Very authentic, original example with a 5 speed. Expensive but worth it
  • 1977 BMW 633CSi. Est. €25 – 35k/ US$31 – 43k. Ex. Abba so while its just a 1970s Bimmer it is a celebrity car and good buying at the estimate

Fabulous 50s and 60s classics

Elsewhere there are the pre-requisite selection of modern collectibles including;

  • 1989 Porsche RUF CTR Clubsport. Est. €275 – 325k/ US$341 – 403k. Very rare and the only one in this colour. High miles but still priced right. Compares well to the RUF at Artcurial
  • 1993 Bugatti EB110SS. Est. €850k – 1.1 million/ US$1.05 – 1.36 million. Unique prototipo. Well worth the money for a future collectible
  • 1995 Lancia Delta HF Integrale Evoluzione II. Est. €90 – 120k/ US$112 – 149k. Very collectible road car. Loves the corners and ultimate spec
  • 2005 Maserati MC12. Est. €2 – 2.5 million/ US$ 2.48 – 3.1 million, Apart from the example that sold at Duemilla Route I cannot find another to reach this level, $1.5 – 2 million would be more realistic but we will see……
  • 2009 Ferrari 599GTB. Est. €300 – 350k/ US$372 – 434k. 1 of 10 Euro delivered 6 speed manuals. Excellent car. Not sure about the long term value of these but this is market priced
  • 2014 McLaren P1. Est. €1.7 – 2 million/ US$2.1 – 2.48 million. Low miles and unique spec. These were $2 million or more, now more like $1.5 – 2 million, expensive
  • 2016 Mercedes-Benz G500 4×4. Est. €180 – 220k/ US$223 – 273k. All the rage with the kids today, not sure they will be collectible but there you go
  • 2017 Bugatti Chiron. Est. €3.2 – 3.6 million/ $3.97 – 4.46 million. Like new and all is it should. The only previous sale was for $3.78 so I cannot see them getting $3.97, in fact closer to $3.5 would be more realistic

Modern madness

All in all a fascinating sale full of interesting exotic collectors cars.

RESULTS

RM Sothebys 2018 Paris sale was lead by the entry of the Ferrari 166MM/53 which was an excellent car with lots of charisma and eligible for everything. Despite spirited bidding the lot was flagged off at 3.45 million EURO, although no word on whether they were genuine bids or not. Despite the failure of this and other big lots, RM joined Artcurial in posting pretty much the same results as 2017 with RM grossing $29.142 mil. The highpoints were the Bugatti Chiron at 3.3 million EURO ($4.08 million US), Maserati MC12 at 2 million EURO ($2.457 million US$) and one of the best BMW 507s at 1.77 million EURO ($2.18 million US). Other than these cars only the Lancia Delta HF Integrale broke its estimate bounds at 161k EURO ($198k US), some 34% more than expected as did the prototype Bugatti EB110SS at 1.152 million EURO ($1.414 million US), 5% over estimate.

A fair few cars were sold below estimate with RM working hard to create a deal, the 1954 Osca 2000S selling at 792k EURO ($972k US), 9% below estimate, Bizzarini Europa at 213k EURO ($261k US), 15% below and the Bugatti Type 35 at 387k EURO ($476k US). The three weakest sellers were all offered at no estimate, the 911/993 Carrera S Cabriolet only fetching 269k EURO ($330k US), 23% under, Lamborghini Jalpa at 60k EURO ($74k US), 40% under and the 2005 Magnate P708 hitting just 89k EURO ($109k US), 70% below low estimate. Other than the 166MM/53 there were a handful of big metal that could or should have sold at their high bids although the Europeans are noted for being finicky about what they will accept. Among the lots that failed to sell were the Maserati 3500GT Vignale Spider at a reported 575k EURO high bid, McLaren P1 at 1.5 million EURO (perhaps the new market price?), Johnny Hallydays Iso at 1.975 million EURO (hard to see it getting any better than this) and the freshly restored but quite weird Ferrari 275GTB Alloy longnose at 2.2 million EURO.

A relatively average sale in many ways, its difficult to call it either good or bad since it matched 2017s dollar for dollar. I guess its a pass
