Bonhams took over the Retromobile mantle from Christies and the first two years hosted the official Retromobile sale. These two years coincided with a renewed impetus in the Motoring department and they offered the Saoutchik bodied Mercedes that may be a frequent flier but is one of the most beautiful cars ever built and then the barn find Earl Howe Bugatti Type 57S Atalante and did spectacularly well for the period. A poor 2010 sale was followed by Artcurial becoming the official Retromobile sale hosts and Bonhams has since struggled to sustain any momentum, the sale becoming more of a boutique sale. For all that it is still a sale that promises plenty of exquisite quirky French classics.

2018s sale was marketed around the set of Lamborghini’s plus collections of Minerva’s and Italian Rally cars but a car that was barely mentioned could be considered one of the greatest collector cars ever offered. The Bugatti Type 57S is one of the most collectible cars ever produced but before the mighty 57S was launched Jean Bugatti had designed the Type 57TT with a lowered chassis and engine tuned for competition use. The first two examples were built for the 1935 Tourist Trophy where Brian Lewis Retired and Earl Howe finished a fine third and further examples were known as either the competition spec TT of which not more than a handful were made and maybe another 10 semi competition Grand Raid road cars. History lesson over, the car Earl Howe raced to 3rd at the TT is on offer at Bonhams and its history continued when it was eventually owned and raced by “Levegh” who was later infamous for his fatal crash at Le Mans in 1955. Leveghs ownership ended in the late 1930s and the car was in Australia by the start of WW2 where it ended up with the vendor from 1958 who after decades of storage restored it over further decades and its only recently that it has been shown at all. Now sure its not the prettiest car and for Bugatti it could even be called ugly but it has history in spades and should be a sure fire entry for any race or concours and  as such it seems very cheap indeed €780k – 1.3 million/ US$967k – 1.6 million and I wouldn’t be surprised to see it fetch far more.

The Lamborghini on offer are;

  • 1966 Lamborghini 400GT 2+2. Est. €520 – 580k/ $645 – 720k. Looks gorgeous but little information given, noted to be in good order. Hard to say
  • 1968 Lamborghini Miura P400S. Est. €1.2 – 1.4 million/ $1.49 – 1.74 million. A gorgeous Italian car that really stuns in Yellow or could be taken back to its original Blue. Fair value
  • 1974 Lamborghini Countach LP400 Periscopo. Est. €600 – 800k/ $744 – 992k. 1 of just 157 examples. Seems perfectly reasonable and a very good buy

Lucious Lamborghini

The Jacques Vander Stappen collection of fine Belgian automobile is centered around the most important marque, Minerva and includes;

  • 1907 Minerva Type K 40HP Limousine Transformable. Est. €350 – 450k/ $434 – 558k. 1 of just 2 examples extant. Pretty and highly original. Perhaps a touch expensive
  • 1934 Minerva Type AL d’Ieteren Imperial Cabriolet. Est €300 – 400k/ $372 – 496k. A gorgeous full custom big Minerva. 6.6 litre engine. Seems reasonable
  • 1926 Minerva Type AF Paul Ostruk Coupe de Ville. Est. €250 – 280k/ US$310 – 347k. Very rare full custom, perhaps a little staid but seems about right.
  • 1934 Minerva Type AL Coupe. Est. €350 – 450k/ US$434 – 558k. Jacques Dens coachwork. Very rare, potential concours star. Great value.

Marvelous Minerva

The collection of Italian rally cars runs the gamut from some that aren’t particularly genuine through pukka Fiat and Lancia works rally cars and the values reflect that;

  • 1974 Fiat X1/9 Group 4. Est €30 – 40k/ US$37 – 50k. Its value reflects its questionable legitimacy. Otherwise well worth it for a fun little car for not much cash
  • 1973 Fiat 124 Abarth Group IV. Est. €70 – 90k/ US$87 – 112k. Its not a works rally car but still lots of fun. Eligible for multiple European rally championships
  • 1988 Lancia Delta Integrale 00425550. Est. €170 – 220k/ US$211 – 273k.  Turkish rally championship ’88 and authentic, ready to go and have fun in classic rallying. Fair priced
  • 1975 Fiat 124 Abarth Group IV. Est. €200 – 250k/ US$248 – 310k. 1 of just 7 works rally cars. Authentic and certified. Fair priced
  • 1986 Lancia Delta S4 Group B. Est. €580 – 780k/ US$719 – 967k. 1 of 3 built by Lancia Corse and used for works team training. Totally authentic and both incredibly fast and rare. Expensive but still value

Gravel thrills galore

Elsewhere there are the requisite Pre War classics and many of them are well worth a look;

  • 1904 Fiat 24/32HP L’Arriere Tonneau. Est. €750 – 950k/ US$930k – 1.18 million. 1 of just 5 big Fiats in existence. Was once buried by its first owner. Stunning and eligible for any event. More than worth the money but is it too unfashionable in the current market. Could surprise
  • 1915 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost London – Edinburgh Limousine. Est. €450 – 550k/ $558 – 682k.Another month, another claimed ex Tsar Nicolas Rolls Silver Ghost. Besides that it is a cool old Rolls with its original coachwork and is priced right.
  • 1924 Turcat-Mery 15/25HP Model SG Berline. Est. €20 – 30k/ US$25 – 37k. Its just a big old Saloon but its incredibly rare and no risk at the estimate
  • 1925 Hispano-Suiza H6B Kellner Coupe de Ville. Est. €350 – 450k/ $434 – 558k. A full custom Hispano by Kellner and great buying at the price.
  • 1926 Bentley 3 Litre Red Label Speed Model Tourer. Est. €650 – 750k/ US$806 – 930k. Incredibly rare to see a Bentley that is this original and great buying for a beautiful car. Its only a 3 litre but should still be worth this and maybe a little more
    Black over Black. RHD. Vanden Plas open 4 seater coachwork (#1306) in aocumentation to ensure this was a Sport Cabriolet)

Pre – war grandee’s

Another key market for the sale is the mid century collectibles and the following stand out;

  • 1953 Inter Type 175A Microcar. Est. €50 – 70k/ US$62 – 87k. Very rare and highly collectible microcar
  • 1958 Facel Vega HK500 Coupe HK6-A6. Est. €120 – 180k/ US$149 – 223k. A celebrity owned Franco-US hybrid and good buying
  • 1959 Lancia Appia Coupe. Est. €30 – 50k/ US$37 – 62k. A delightful little Italian coupe. Fairly priced.
  • 1960 Maserati 3500GT Vignale Spider. Est. €670 – 780k/ US$830 – 967k. A gorgeous example in great condition and well worth a look at what is a reasonable estimate
  • 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS. Est. €650 – 850k/ US$806k – 1.054 million. A beautiful, original example. Concours quality prep. One of the best Carrera offered in recent times so while expensive, its also fairly priced.

Stars and star cars

Finally it wouldn’t be Paris without some weird exotica and Bonhams have two lots on offer that are super cool;

  • 1934 Hispano-Suiza Hydroplane. Est. €600 – 800k/ US$744 – 992k. Its got history and style galore and looks just right. Not sure it could be used but would make an awesome museum centrepiece. Impossible to say if expensive or not, seems right for a unique boat though.
  • 2002 Renault Clio V6. Est. €45 – 55k/ US$56 – 68k. Amazingly cool but almost unknown Renault supercar. Well worth a look for something a bit mad. Pretty cheap for a future collectible.

Only in Paris

Bonhams may not be offering any marquee lots at Paris in 2018 but scratch the surface and there is much to delight any classic car enthusiast. Bravo.

RESULTS

Bonhams were the sole auction company to actually increase their gross with an increase from $15.9 to $18.5 million and managed this without any true marquee lot, even the top selling 1904 Fiat 24/32HP and 1935 Bugatti Type 57TT  only making 713k EURO ($875k US) each. Bucking the recent trend of poor results for pre war collectibles, Bonhams Paris saw them attain very good results across the board with few failures. The lovely van der Stappen collection of Minerva was a hit, no more so than the 1907 Type K Limousine that sold for 604k EURO (741k US), no less than 73% above estimate, buyers clearly enamored with its spectacular history. Other hits from the collection included the AL Coupe at a mid estimate 391k EURO ($480k US), Type AL Imperial Cabriolet at a mid estimate 310k EURO ($381k US), 1910 Model S Laundalette at a 39% over estimate 166k EURO ($205k US). Further hits were the 1912 Model CC Tourer at a 130% over estimate 126k EURO ($156k US) and 1938 Type F/M8 Limousine at a 68% over estimate 80k EURO ($99k US), the only failure was the 1926 Type AF Paul Ostruck Coupe de Ville which failed to sell at a 190k EURO high bid.

Other cars that sold well included the 1912 FN at a 111% over estimate 63k EURO ($78k US), 1910 Renault at 75% over estimate, 158k EURO ($194k US), 1908 De Dion Bouton at 67% over estimate 184k EURO ($226k US), 1928 Bugatti Type 40 at 529k EURO ($649k US), 32% over estimate. A more modern car that did well was a 1990 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5-16 Evo 2 that sold for 20% over estimate at 150k EURO ($183k US). A few cars sold for mid estimate amounts and included the spectacular 3 Litre Bentley at 701k EURO ($861k US), 1974 Lamborghini Countach LP400 at 638k EURO ($783k US) and 1970 Ferrari 365GTB/4 that had been a Straman conversion to spider at 517k EURO ($635k US). Several of the cars on offer struggled and they included the 1988 Ford Sierra RS500 that sold 20% under estimate at 32k EURO ($40k US), 1957 Meredes Benz SLS Replica at a 30% below estimate 632k EURO ($776k US), 1995 Ferrari F355 Challenge at 46% below estimate 75k EURO ($92k US) and 1974 Fiat X1/9 Group 4 at 58% below estimate, 13k EURO ($16k US).

Aside from the successes plenty of money was left on the table and it must be noted once again that European vendors are finicky about what they will accept with lots of the cars receiving some attractive bids and failing. Among these were the Lamborghini Miura at a reported 1 million EURO high bid, Maserati 3500GT  Vignale Spider at 590k EURO, Porsche 911 Carrera RS at 550k EURO (it had just had 300k in restoration so fair enough), Hispano Hydroplane at 500k EURO (who knows what its worth), 1939 Horch 853 Sport Cabriolet at 500k EURO. Others to fail include the Lancia Delta S4 at 450k EURO, Lamborghini 400GT at 460k EURO and Rolls-Royce  Silver Ghost at 380k EURO.

Bonhams should be pleased with their sale and the results show they are on the right track although they, like Artcurial and RM Sotheby’s, they know what needs to be improved for 2019. Put simply, realistic vendors with realistic aspirations would have seen another $5 million worth of cars in the sold column.
