Salon Rétromobile – Hall 2.2
Parc des expositions Porte de Versailles
75015 Paris

Artcurial took over the mantle of official Retromobile auction host in 2011 and after several years of success, made a giant splash in 2015 when they offered the Baillon collection of barnfinds boosting results into the $50+ million range. 2016 saw them make another step forward in prominence when they offered the best of the Ferrari 335S direct from the Bardinon families Mas du Clos collection. The 335s was sold at the behest of the CFE (the French tax authorities) and sold it for a new world record (in Euro’s) for the most expensive automobile ever sold at auction. An attempt to pay the death taxes, the amount realised should have been more than ample to keep the Bardinon’s, the CFE and especially Artcurial very happy. 2015 and 2016s sales were Artcurials most successful ever, the overall gross marking this as one of the top 10 sales outside of Monterey. 2017s sale featured the Dino Speciale Prototipo and a fine selection of cars but without a true marquee consignment the gross nearly halved.

2018s sale was kicked off with the biggest news in the car world for some time, Artcurial announcing they would be off

ering the 1964 Le Mans winning Ferrari 250/275P direct from the Bardinon collection. While this clearly signaled that they estate was still not settled, it also raised the question of how much the  family may have wanted for the car and whether that was reasonable for such a car. This particular example was the final works Ferrari to win at Le Mans and had both an impeccable provenance and was a car that had barely been shown in public in 4 decades and while that makes it truly special, the car is arguably not Ferrari’s prettiest nor is it as usable as some of the earlier Ferrari’s. Estimates above $40 million were bandied about and Artcurial helpfully offered no estimate although for reasons already noted it seemed difficult to imagine that the car would struggle to reach quite that level and somewhere around the 335S price level or even lower seemed more likely. Less than two weeks before the sale machinations within the family have seen the lot withdrawn and one can assume left Artcurial feeling at least a little peeved although as well as any vendors encouraged to  offer lots in a sale including this car. Its hard not to imagine that the pressures to offer this 275P will see all of the estate sold either as a group by a dealer or via an auction at some point and even if not at Artcurial’s 2018 Retromobile sale, they have had the marketing benefit from the offer.

Aside from the 275P, the sale sees collections of Van Vooren bodied cars, Ferrari’s, Citroen’s, Voiturettes and Porsche’s. Ferrari’s on offer include another of the 250GT Cabriolet Serie I, the fourth example to be offered since August ’17, of just forty built and while #0849GT looks superb and very elegant with its original matching numbers engine, it must be said its bloody expensive at 7 – 9 million EUR ($8.7 – 11 million US). Compare Artcurials estimate to the $4.8 for #1475GT at Gooding Pebble Beach or the $5.6 for #0791 at RM Maranello or even the $7 – 8.5 million estimate that Gooding failed to sell #1079GT for at Scottsdale ’18. Having said that, if anyone can spring a surprise its Artcurial and maybe thats exactly what will happen. Other Ferrari on offer include an Enzo with 19,000 miles and priced correctly at 1.8 – 2.2 million EUR ($2.2 – 2.7 million US) and a new FXX that despite four owners has been driven just 97km from new, these are notoriously hard to sell and 2.6 – 3.2 million EUR ($3.2 – 4 million US) seems a lot for a car that you essentially cannot use.

Bugatti, Voisin and Rolls-Royce with Van Vooren coachwork

The Jean-Louis Miloe collection of Porsche is also on offer and this collection exemplifies the best of the classic Porsche, most with Porsche AG imprimatur;

  • 1959 Porsche 356A Carrera 1600GS Speedster. Est. €800k – 1.2 millon/ US$992k – 1.488 million. 1 of just 27 made with an awesome look. Exceptional and while expensive, well worth the money and a solid long term investment
  • 1963 Porsche 356B Carrera 2 GT. Est. €800k – 1.2 millon/ US$992k – 1.488 million. Rather unknown but rebuilt by Porsche Classic and all complete. Seems expensive compared to the above

The special Citroens, especially the Chapron bodied examples transcend their usual proletariat roots and with the multiple bodystyles and modernity are highly collectible. The Richard Reinders collection of Citroen on offer include;

Eclectic French voiturette’s.

Pre – War automobiles

Any Retromobile sale must include a selection of fine pre-war cars and Artcurials 2018 sale is no different, where other sales struggle, this sale always manages to get them sold and frequently at very strong prices. 2018s selection includes;

  • 1927 Voisin C11 Berline Lumineuse. Est. €250 – 350k/ US$310 – 434k. 1 of just 4 examples to survive. Lovely car and ideal for concours
  • 1929 Alfa Romeo 6C1750SS Zagato Spider. Est. €900k – 1.3 million/  US$1.12 – 1.61 million. Claimed to be a Zagato but whether its authentic or not is unknown. If not its worth half this, if it is perhaps triple the price. A huge risk.
  • 1932 Delage D8S Chapron Coupe Est. €140 – 220k/ US$174 – 273k. 1 of just 99 examples. Lovely car, reasonably priced.
  • 1936 Bugatti Type 57 Galibier. Est. €120 – 180k/ US$149 – 223k. Barn find. Cool old thing although it is still a fairly dull saloon.
  • 1936 Delahaye 135 Coupe des Alpes Chapron Mylord Cabriolet. Est. €250 – 350k/ US$310 – 434k. Sublime. Glamorous concours queen.
  • 1937 Horch 853 Sport Cabriolet. Est. €600 – 800k/ US$744 – 992k. Totally original and authentic. Teutonic style. Priced right.
  • 1937 Hispano-Suiza J12 Gurney Nutting Saloon. Est. €600 – 900k/ US$744k – 1.12 million. Maharajah car. A Saloon but a very grand example of the type. Eligible for everything and great buying.
  • 1938 Bugatti Type 57C Atalante. Est. €3 – 3.5 million/ $3.7 – 4.3 million. Excellent example and formerly part of the Peter Williamson collection. Perhaps a touch expensive.
  • 1942 Alfa Romeo 6C2500 Pininfarina Cabriolet. Est. €1 – 1.3 million/ US$1.24 – 1.6 million. Gorgeous vehicle, very rare and exquisite. Fairly priced.

Awesome pre war exotica

Mid century classics

The 1950s and 1960s are still the era that is most desired and prices continue to reflect that. Artcurial’s selection includes;

  • 1949 Simca Huit Motto Barchette. Est. €225 – 275k/ US$279 – 341k. Rare little racer. Unique spec. Eligible for most events incl. Mille Miglia and Le Mans. Expensive for a 1200cc car but where would you find another.
  • 1951 Porsche 356 Pre A 1300 Coupe. Est. €440 – 520k/ US$546 – 645k. Its very rare to find one so early, still closely related to the Beetle. Priced right.
  • 1952 Gordini Type 16 Formula 1. Est. €900k – 1.4 million/ US$1.12 – 1.74 million. Works Grand Prix car, won the ’52 French GP. Unrepeatable. Priced right for what it is.
  • 1953 Maserati A6GCS. Est. €2.8 – 3.6 million/ US$3.47 – 4.46 million. Attilio Buffa, Mille Miglia ’55 DNF, claimed authentic but price is a touch low for the type, Check with Walter Baumer before writing a large cheque
  • 1955 Maserati A6G/2000 Allemano/Zagato Coupe. Est. €2.5 – 2.7 million/ US$3.1 – 3.34 million. Allemano Coupe, fitted with pukka Zagato Coupe bodywork during restoration 10 years ago. Priced between the two, Allemano’s are in the $2s and Zagatos in the $4s so maybe correct but hard to tell. As its not authentic it may not be eligible for concours. Check with Walter Baumer
  • 1957 Facel Vega FV3. Est. €120 – 180k/ US$149 – 223k. Gorgeous example of the mighty Franco-American hybrid. Cheap for what it offers
  • 1962 Aston Martin DB4 Series V SS Saloon. Est. €550 – 700k/ US$682 – 868k. Rule Britannia. Noted to be superb and if it is fair priced
  • 1963 Rene Bonnet Aerodjet. Est. €250 – 300k/ US$310 – 372k. ex. Le Mans. Restored and a ticket for Le Mans classic. Low powered though
  • 1965 De Tomaso Vallelunga. Est. €200 – 280k/ US$248 – 347k. A world away from the Pantera. Very cool. Probably a little expensive but still worth it
  • 1966 Ford Mustang 289 Convertible. Est. €100 – 150k/ US$124 – 186k. Built for Henry Ford II. Like new and worth it.

Mid century cars, a winning formula

Modern collectibles

All the rage in 2017, the rarest examples seem to be holding their values in 2018. The best examples on offer include;

  • 1980 Renault 5 Turbo Group 4. Est. €120 – 160k/ US$149 – 198k. A full Group 4 rally car. Eligible for lots of events in Europe. Fair priced.
  • 1985 Renault 205 Turbo 16. Est. €140 – 180k/ US$174 – 223k. Very rare and fast road car. Should be a good investment.
  • 1985 Porsche 962C. Est. €1.3 – 1.6 million/ US$1.61 – 1.98 million. Very fast, potential race winner then and now. If you have the money to run a season of classic racing you wont regret it.
  • 1997 Porsche 911 RUF CTR-2. Est. €480 – 620k/ US$595 – 769k. Very very cool and fast, 1 of just 16 made. Expensive but probably okay.

Artcurial will be annoyed that the 275P isn’t on offer and thus they miss the chance to score a new world record but they should be looking forward to a sale that offers a wonderfully eclectic mix of fabulous French exotics. Exciting stuff.

Results

Artcurial had secured enough heavy metal to make 2018 look like a bonanza and possibly a match for the $61 million result of 2016. The withdrawal of the 275P robbed the sale of its glamour and it came down to more prosaic machinery. As it was the 250GT Pininfarina Cabriolet Series I lead the way and looked likely to top the sheets although the 7 – 9 million EURO estimate looked pretty steep and so it proved with a reported high bid of 5.5 million EURO not getting the job done, although this was ballpark for the model. This and many more failures among the 177 lots meant the total was pretty much the same as last years at $36.019 million US. This total was achieved with both 24 extra lots on offer, compared to 2016, and a lift in the sell through rate to 80% so per lot sold the results were down and Artcurial may consider this a pass but could do better. As for the auction itself it must be noted that many observers present were mystified by the sale with three separate staff calling bids and in multiple languages so perhaps a change in style might help.

Aside from the two big Ferrari’s, three cars sold for in excess of $3 million US$ including the top selling Bugatti Atalante which despite its older restoration appealed as a relatively original example and made a 3% over estimate 2.9 million EURO ($3.563 million US). The other two were a Ferrari FXX, a car with no natural purpose and hard to sell, Artcurial doing well to get a deal done at 2.674 million EURO ($3.28 million US) and the Maserati A6GCS at 2.445 million EURO ($3.001 million US), the buyer clearly trusting the claimed history of this example although it still sold for 13% below the low estimate. The Miloe Porsche collection had some disparate results with the Porsche 904 Carrera selling very well at 1.874 million EURO ($2.3 million US)(4% over estimate) belying its quality and multi use ability. Further great results included the 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing at 1.159 million EURO ($1.421 million US) (16% over estimate), Ferrari F40 at 954k EURO ($1.17 million US), 1937 Hispano-Suiza J12 at 644k EURO ($790k US), 1997 Porsche 911 RUF CTR-2 at 572k EURO ($702k US) and Ferrari 430GTC at 417k EURO ($512k US). Two of the best results were the 1951 Porsche 356 Pre-A Coupe at 894k EURO ($1.097 million US) (72% over estimate!) and Delage D8-120 Chapron Cabriolet at 536k EURO ($658k US) (115% over estimate).

Further top results came from the Broual collection of micro cars and Voiturettes, although most had minute estimates. The best of these was the De Coucy that sold for 466% over estimate at 45k EURO ($56k US), Ruby Cyclecar at $14k EURO ($18k US), 376% over estimate, 1970 Titan Mark 6 Formula Ford at 24k EURO ($29k US), 297% over estimate, 1968 Gerca Formula France at 21k EURO ($26k US), 258% over estimate. A few cars sold for reasonable but still impressive prices and included the 1927 Voisin C11 at 298k EURO ($366k US), Bugatti Type 57 Galibier at 244k EURO ($299k US), Delage D8S Chapron Coupe at 274k EURO ($336k US), 1966 Ford Mustang 289 at 185k EURO ($227k US) and 1937 Hispano-Suiza K6 at 286k EURO ($351k US). Of the no sales the Gordini Type 16 stalled at 800k EUROs, Alfa Romeo 6C2500 Cabriolet at 880k EUROs and neither of the Porsche 356s from the Miloe collection had any interest. Other than the aforementioned 250GT Cabriolet the two biggest duds were the Enzo at 1.6 million EURO and Maserati A6G/2000 Zagato Coupe at 1.85 million EURO.

Overall, Artcurial must know they will be required to work harder on securing consignments at reasonable estimates, otherwise this sale would have been up there with the 2014 and 2015 sales.
