RM Scottsdale – January 18th & 19th

RM, as they were known way back then, were the first to follow Barrett-Jacksons path and establish a Scottsdale sale and they were successful from the beginning with a mix of pre and post war domestic and exotic classics. Like the rest of the market the early 2010s were a time of exponential growth while the apogee was reached in 2015/6 with $60 million in sales despite sell through rates in the high 80% range. While Ferrari’s and Mercedes have long been the marquee lots on offer, this years sale moves slightly sideways with pinnacle offerings of Alfa Romeo’s and a Jaguar alongside multiple Ferrari’s and the ubiquitous Porsches.

2018s pinnacle lot and the star of RMs marketing campaign is the ex works prototype Jaguar D-Type for which they have given an estimate of $12 – 15 million. One of three prototypes that were built for Le Mans ’54, XKD403 was raced by Stirling Moss and Peter Walker but retired although the car raced through early 1955 when it was sold to a well connected customer. Unfortunately like so many D-Types there were a few scrapes including a crash at Goodwood that required a new front subframe and a fatal accident in Canada with supposedly little damage. More recently the car has been owned by Terry Larson and like all of his cars prepared to the highest standards of fit and finish while retaining its originality. Any D-Type is rare, an example with works racing team heritage that includes Stirling Moss and retaining the majority of its original identity is rarer stil. The estimate may seem high but it is absolutely correct. and compares well to the works team brethren Le Mans winning XKD501 which RM sold for $21.7 million in 2016.

Otherwise the media attention and marketing was concentrated on the “A Century of Sportscars collection” which was a collection of fine Alfa Romeo and Ferrari. The key highlight is the oldest surviving Alfa Romeo, a 1921 G1 that miraculously survived a very hard life in Australia long enough that it could be restored and then restored again and again, after four restorations it is now in so called Spider Corsa format and they have helpfully offered no estimate although it is offered without reserve and maybe $2 – 3 million seems right. Elsewhere the cars on offer include multiple frequent fliers, all offered at no estimate and the highlights are;

  • 1942 Alfa Romeo 6C2500SS Spider, gorgeous car but bodywork has no business being on this chassis and yet it won at Pebble in ’97, $900k – 1 million
  • 1955 Alfa Romeo 1900C SS Speciale Boano, excellent, unique concours star, possible a little too expensive at $1.25 – 1.75 million
  • 1960 Ferrari 250GT Cabriolet Series II, Rare and gorgeous in blue, well restored but a touch expensive at $1.4 – 1.8 million
  • 1964 Ferrari 250GT Lusso, a great example with a very good restoration and elegant in blue, market priced at $1.8 – 2.2 million
  • 1969 Ferrari 206GT, a part restored car with some recent work, about right at $625 – 825k
  • 1975 Ferrari 365GT4/BB, a rare car, especially in the USA, another lovely blue car, and well maintained, fair priced at $450 – 550k

Otherwise there are plenty of pre-war options, the highlights including;

  • 1907 Ford Model K Roadster, 1 of just 10 survivors of the first luxury Ford, a must for any Ford collection at $175 – 275k and no reserve
  • 1929 Stutz Model M Le Baron 4 pass Tonneau Cowl Speedster, a full classic in good condition for just $250 – 350k and no reserve
  • 1933 Cadillac V16 Fleetwood 7 pass Towncar, ex Joan Crawford and Otis Chandler, a star car in every way and good value at $250 – 300k and no reserve
  • 1934 Brewster Ford Convertible Sedan, near unique car and a lovely bit of Americana at just $100 – 150k and no reserve
  • 1935 Auburn Eight Supercharged Speedster, 1 of just 150 examples, excellent example, concours star and still good value at $500 – 650k and no reserve
  • 1937 Lincoln Model K Willoughby Panel Brougham, rare and lovely large towncar style at $175 – 250k and no reserve
  • 1937 Rolls-Royce Phantom III Vesters & Neirinck Pillarless Saloon, unique and a sure fire concours star at $550 – 750k
  • 1938 Aston Martin 15/98 Short Chassis Abbot DHC, not particularly sporty but good looking and great condition, good buying at $200 – 250k and no reserve.
  • 1938 Packard Twelve Rollston Laundalette, a full custom, ex Doris Duke, special then, more so now, crazy value at $250 – 300k
  • 1939 Packard Twelve Brunn Cabriolet Touring, rare big full classic Packard and well worth a look at just $125 – 150k and no reserve
  • 1941 Packard Custom Super Eight One Eighty Convertible Victoria by Darrin, 1 of just 35, its an iconic car and a value at $350 – 425k and no reserve

Mid century classics abound and among them the highlights are;

  • 1948 Tucker 48, Preston Tuckers own car, later used in the movie, still totally original, great buying at $1.25 – 1.5 million and no reserve
  • 1952 Ferrari 212 Inter Ghia Coupe, an interesting but not beautiful example, ex Juan Peron, unique, famous car, a touch expensive at $1.6 – 2 million
  • 1957 Ferrari 250GT Boano, lovely example in Blue and well restored just 6 years ago, well priced at $975k – 1.05 million
  • 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadtser, correct silver example, market priced at $950k – 1.05 million
  • 1962 Jaguar E-Type Series I 3.8 Roadster, a nice Black car with every right and noted high level restoration, good buying at $200 – 250k
  • 1962 Maserati 3500GTi Vignale Spider, a lovely example in Green, still highly original, good buying at $575 – 675k
  • 1965 Shelby Cobra 289, lovely red car with a good story, authentic and largely original, $900k – 1.2 million
  • 1965 Shelby GT350R, the Cobra Caravan car, restored and authentic, expensive but well worth it at $1 – 1.25 million
  • 1966 Ferrari 330GTC, excellent car, recommissioned, still totally original, value at $550 – 650k’
  • 1966 Shelby Cobra 427 S/C, gorgeous Silver car, all correct and properly restored at $2 – 2.4 million
  • 1967 Ferrari 330GTS, a rare but good quality original complete with its Classiche, market correct at $1.8 – 2.2 million
  • 1967 Ferrari 330GTC, lovely in Gold, might require a mechanical restoration at some point but priced right at $500 – 600k
  • 1967 Toyota 2000GT, Superb, restored example in Bellatrix Yellow, good buying at $600 – 700k and no reserve

Modern classics are actually relatively thin on the ground but include;

  • 1987 Porsche 959 Komfort, federalized example and much recent maintenance, market correct at $1 – 1.25 million
  • 1993 Bugatti EB110GT, a good Black car that is federalized and offers plenty of collector value for what is still a top of the market $750 – 950k
  • 2008 Lamborghini Murcielargo Roadster LP640m a rare (1 of 8) example with much recent maintenance at a correct $375 – 425k
  • 2014 Ferrari F12 Tdf
  • 2014 Lamborghini Aventador LP720-4 50th Anniversary, excellent yellow car, very rare and about right at $450 – 500k
  • 2014 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series, like new and expensive but it is a rare car, $425 – 475k
  • 2015 Ferrari 458 Speciale A, rare and like new, as most are, expensive but market correct at $550 – 750k
  • 2017 Ferrari F12 TDf, cool car in great colours and maybe market correct at $1.2 – 1.4 million but still crazy expensive

Apart from the pre-war cars there simply isn’t much that can be called affordable but two cars stand out as good buying at below $200k;

  • 1959 Mercedes-Benz O319, a lovely camper in exceptional condition and well worth a look at $175 – 200k and no reserve
  • 1962 Chevrolet Impala SS Convertible, a great cruiser and nice in red, good stuff and $50 – 75k and no reserve

Perhaps the sale lacks the excitement of Gooding & Co.s offerings but still a fabulous selection of cars and kudos to RM Sotheby’s

RESULTS

RM would have come to Scottsdale with high hopes to hit the $50 million mark for the fourth year in a row although that result depended on the Jaguar D-Type selling and after Goodings failure to sell their D earlier on in the day it looked shaky. Bidding on the D was frantic and seemed very real with two bidders dueling over this wonderful car but it ended rather dramatically when auctioneer Marten ten Holder suddenly stated all done and gavelled at $9.8 million it was unclear what the result was. Despite the live feed displaying Jaguar D-Type sold at $9.8 million (net) it wasn’t sold and this left a $12+ million dollar hole in the gross, It must be said that the $9.8 million would have equaled nearly $11 million with buyers premium and that was within spitting distance of the low estimate so it was surprising they couldn’t have created a post block sale but thems the breaks. With no other marquee lot it was always going to hurt the total and so it proved with the total gross just $36 million or basically a third down on 2017s results.

Despite the failure of the marquee lot, the rest of the sale featured some rather disparate prices for what was on offer. Leading the way was the 1966 Shelby Cobra 427 S/C that sold for a massive $2.95 million and while it was a gorgeous example with fantastic provenance, it was far and away the most expensive example of the type ever sold and fully 19% over the high estimate. Elsewhere Preston’s own Tucker sold at $1.79 million or 16% over estimate which was a fantastic result for a unique car and while a little expensive, was still worth it as an investment. Ferrari’s were difficult to sell with the 330GTS and 250GT Boano failing to sell while the 212 Inter Ghia Coupe only made $1.187 million or 26% below estimate, the 365GT4/BB sold for $401k or 11% below, 246GTS at $406k (-19%) and 206GT at $423k (32% below). A few Ferrari did do okay with the 250GT Cabriolet Series II selling for a mid estimate $1.4 million while the two glamorous modern Ferrari sold well at mid estimate prices with the 458 Speciale A sold for $626k and F12TDf at $1.325 million.

Other cars from the Century of Sportscar collection also sold for some low prices with the 1942 Alfa Romeo 6C2500SS “rebody” fetching just $555k or 38% below the $900k low estimate. Finally the Alfa Romeo G1, the oldest Alfa Romeo extant fetched just $445k which despite its lack of authenticity and provenance is crazy low, I would of expected a couple of million or more so there goes. In fact the only Alfa from the collection to sell well was the Alfa Romeo 1900C SS Boano Coupe at $1.27 million which was a very good result. Elsewhere the Bugatti EB110GT actually sold and did so for an above estimated amount of $967k, fully 2% more than the bullish estimate would have suggested. The Mercedes 300SL Roadster made $1.08 million (3% above) and the Auburn Eight Speedster showed there is still money for great pre war cars at $769k (15% above).

Cars that were merely mid estimate sellers include the 1965 Shelby Cobra 289 at $1.16 million, 1987 Porsche 959 Komfort at $1.16 million, 1937 Rolls Royce Phantom III at $593k and 1962 Maserati 3500GTi Vignale Spider at $604k. The 1965 Shelby Mustang GT350R may have had a cool early history but its provenance was a little lacking and it failed to meet the $1 million low estimate. Finally the 1959 Mercedes O319 was sold at a record amount for the model, $162k although that was still 7% below the bullish low estimate.

RM Sotheby’s will be a little disappointed by the failure of the D-Type but a rather cool selection of cars was still on offer and RM will bounce back in 2019.
