Bonhams Scottsdale

11:00MST January 18th

The Westin Kierland Resort and Spa

Scottsdale

Bonhams began a revitalisation back in 2012 when they launched a new Scottsdale sale and for all but one of the six years managed record growth in revenues on the back of very good sellthrough rates. This growth was based on offering cars such as the “Tailors” Ferrari 212 Export, Ferrari 275GTB/C and Jaguar E-Type Lightweight. Bonhams have occasionally struggled to sustain any of their automobile departments sales momentum and this remains their achilles heel.

16/01/2014 – 78/101 (86%) $23,514,700 $3,190,000 1951 Ferrari 212 Export
15/01/2015 – 76/86 (88%) $26,056,200.00 $9,405,000.00 1966 Ferrari 275GTB/C
28/01/2016 – 91/115 (79%) $17,168,950.00 $2,090,000.00 2015 McLaren P1
19/01/2017 – 85/105 (81%) $36,099,520.00 $7,370,000.00 1963 Jaguar E-Type

18/1/18 – 94/111 (85%) $25,078,250 $5,170,000 1958 Porsche 550A

Bonhams 2018 consignments are lead by the glamorous 1958 Porsche 550A that finished 5th at that years Le Mans and remains in highly original form. Recent years have seen the early 550RS in original format highly desirable and reaching record sums despite the later cars offering a better driver experience and more power. This particular example may have had a stellar competition history and excellent provenance but there are persistent rumours that the car does not contain its original engine although Bonhams claim that it remains numbers matching.

Elsewhere there is a trio of Ferrari lead by a beautiful 1967 275GTB/4 in Grigio Ferro over Nero. It is truly a lovely original example that seems reasonable at $2.8 – 3.4 million, much less than it would have been estimated at back in 2015. Otherwise they offer the 1972 365GTS/4 at $2.4 – 2.8 million and this is a truly superb example that has and will continue to win concours and it is market correct at the price although perhaps a little passe in Rosso over Nero. Finally the trio includes a nice Chairs and Flares 1974 246GTS in Giallo Fly over Beige that seems quite reasonable in its highly original condition at $450 – 550k.

Fabulous Ferrari

A brace of modern Porsche supercars have also featured heavily in Bonhams marketing, one collector offering a 2015 Porsche 918 at $1.2 – 1.6 million and a 2016 Porsche 911R at $400 – 500k. Both of these examples are in excellent colours and have very low mileage and present like new and while the 911R is market correct the 918 is actually pretty cheap compared to others on offer and is potentially one of the buys of the sale.

Late model Porsche

Mid century cars abound at Scottsdale and some present very well. Notably

  • 1951 Alfa Romeo 6C2500SS Pininfarina Cabriolet, rare and fantastic concours condition, good buying at $650 – 750k
  • 1954 Alfa Romeo 1900C Pininfarina Coupe, a lovely example, 1 of just 37, pretty good buying at $400 – 500k.
  • 1956 Porsche 356A Carrera 1500GS, a good Silver example of a collectible car and market priced at $750 – 900k
  • 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster, the 5th example made, recent $460k restoration of an original car. Unique and fairly priced at $1.4 – 1.7 million
  • 1968 Lamborghini Islero 400GT, 1 of just 125 and restored in lovely Oro Kelso, expensive at $350 – 400k but lots of future potential
  • 1969 De Tomaso Mangusta, largely original, fine example at $250 – 350k
  • 1971 Ferrari 365GTB/4, an excellent example, fresh from a Wayne Obry restoration and a potential concours star at $850 – 950k, top market but worth it
  • 1974 Ferrari 246GTS, a lovely example in Blu Dino that has been restored by Dino restorations and is said to be in wonderful condition. Great buying at $350 – 450k

Good buying and better driving

Apart from the two Porsche’s noted above, the modern classics are lead by one of two Ferrari F50 delivered in Nero although this example has both high mileage and previous major crash history, making the low $1.5 – 2 million estimate seem rather strong. Otherwise there is a 2005 Porsche Carrera GT with just 904 miles on the dial at $725 – 825k and a 1982 Lancia 037 Stradale at $350 – 450k which is a sure fire future collectible and fresh from a restoration.

Fast and furious

Bonhams have plenty of reasonably priced examples available although three stand out

  • 1966 Shelby GT350H Fastback, an ex Hertz Rental cars example that is fresh from long term ownership by Carol Shelby, great buying at $150 – 200k
  • 1968 Porsche 911L, a lovely car that has been part restored and $85 – 100k isnt much for a rare car in good condition
  • 1995 Acura NSX-T is a sure fire future collectible and potentially good value for a car with low miles at just $60 – 80k

Good buying for the right buyer

RESULTS

Bonhams lead the way with the offer of the Porsche 550A that won its class at Le Mans in 1958 which afforded them a marquee lot and despite it failing to sell at Gooding Pebble ’16, they managed to get a deal done at $5.17 million which was at the higher end of the estimate range so bravo to Bonhams. A fully decent 85% sellthrough rate ensured that despite only one true marque lot (2016 saw three cars on offer at more than $5 million) they managed to attain a total gross of $25 million which was the second best ever result for the sale.

Other than the Porsche 550A, Bonhams managed to get great results for the 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster at $1.512 million and 1972 Ferrari 365GTS/4 at $2.64 million although they were both mid estimate, it must be noted they were top market prices. The most surprising result of the sale was the 1930 Bentley Speed Six which sold for $1.457 million, fully 46% above its high estimate and proved that the right (and it looked smashing) pre-war car is still highly desirable. The 1991 Ferrari F40 sold for $1.512 million and was in like new condition, good to see that the model has bounced back from its early 2017 low. The 2015 Porsche 918 sold for $1.29 million which seems to be the new market rate for the model while the 1995 Ferrari F50 was one of two in Black but had previous major accident damage and 60,000 miles from new, good buying for the enthusiastic driver at $1.155 million.

Elsewhere the ex Carol Shelby Ford GT sold for $489k or 40% over its high estimate, the 1982 Lancia 037 Stradale at $451k (1% over), 1966 Shelby GT350H at $253k (26% over) and 2006 Dodge Viper RT-10 at $79k (32% over). Both the 2016 Porsche 911R ($478k) and 1974 Ferrari 246GTS at $484k sold at mid estimate prices. Jaguar E-Type Series I Roadsters were market gold and continued to increase year on year but Bonhams example was a refurbished original and struggled to $112k (36% below its estimate) although it would initially seem that over supply may have much to do with that result.

Easily the most surprising result was the failure of the 1967 Ferrari 275GTB/4 which was bid up to $2.65 million, although whether the bids were real or not remains to be seen but whatever the cause, it was bid to reserve and didn’t sell. Other cars to fail include one of the best Daytona’s which failed to reach the $850k low estimate but is going to remain with its vendor who is going to drive it (like he stole it?), the 1956 Porsche 356A Carrera 1500GS Coupe at a strong $750k low estimate, 2005 Porsche Carrera GT at $725k and 1951 Alfa Romeo 6C2500SS Pininfarina Cabriolet at $650k.

All in all this was still a very good sale and the result was very much well done.
