Gooding was created when Christies alumni Dave Gooding got the chance to usurp his old firm and host an auction in conjunction with Pebble Beach, after the one off Palm Beach and Chandler auctions, Gooding began its first wave of expansion by launching the Scottsdale sale in 2009. From the first year they managed to offer a selection that was only partially matched by RM Sotheby’s and their growth was both staggering and exponential, reaching its apogee in a period from 2013 – 2015 when they had 90+% sell through rates and $50+ million sale totals. The past two years have seen a diminishing of lead car star power with last years sale arguably lacking a true marquee ($5 million+) lot and with sell through rates in the lower 80% range the total gross suffered.

2018 110/131 (84%) $49,215,650 $8,085,000 1965 Ferrari 275GTB Speciale

2018 see’s Gooding return to form with all manner of interesting lots on offer and while they may lose out on marquee lot glamour to RM Sotheby’s (ex works D-Type Jag) or Worldwide (Hitlers Merc) they do have a bredth that is unsurpassable by any other. While much of the marketing campaign focused on the Ferrari’s and the Bugatti 55, Gooding stole some of RM Sotheby’s thunder when they released details on their D-Type, an almost unique highly original customer example, that apart from the usual minor scrapes has remained in one piece since new. Unlike many, including RM Sotheby’s, nobody died in XKD-518, it was never seperated into two cars nor did it even lose its original engine or bodywork, has excellent provenance including Led Zepellin manager Peter Grant and Jaguar extraordinaire Terry Larsen, it was even delivered in red. As such it ticks all the boxes except for a stellar race history and as such the estimate seems a touch high but still within market at $10 – 12 million.

The major marketing campaign was kicked off by the Bugatti Type 55, a car that is rather well known because it was the first Type 55 built, merging the Type 54 chassis with the Type 51s 2.3 litre engine and because it was part of the Williamson collection that Gooding sold back in 2008. Originally created with Jean Bugatti designed Roadster bodywork, this car had a relatively hard life and it was restored by Ray Jones and others with a replica of its original bodywork in the 1960s. Restored since the 2008 sale this example is estimated at $4 to 5 million, or nearly three times the $1.76 million it then made but that is still less than half what the impeccable #55-206 sold for at Goodings Pebble 2016 and arguably fantastic value.

Following on from the Bugatti the biggest announcements were around a selection of fine Ferrari’s that would be offered, lead by Battista Pininfarina’s unique 275GTB, the only one actually built by that firm rather than Scaglietti and featuring numerous unique touches. A rather singular example, this 275 defies all categorisation, although it isn’t totally original and its difficult to assess where the value should lie since it isn’t a GTB/C or a Special nor even a NART Spider but if RM could get $10 million for the ex Steve McQueen GTB/4 then why not the $8 to 10 million estimate. The other Ferrari’s announced included;

  • 250GT Pininfarina Cabriolet Series I, with a fascinating provenance and in sublime condition, very elegant and both expensive and worth it at $7 to 8.5 million
  • 500 Mondial at $5 – 5.75, an interesting and very original car but slightly expensive for a car without big name race history
  • 250GT Pininfarina Cabriolet Series II, with a recent restoration in Nero at $1.5 – 1.8 million, again maybe 10 – 20% too expensive but good to see one not in resale red.

Certainly not flavour of the month but presenting good buying for right collector are some interesting pre war cars;

  • 1921 Mercer Series 5 Sport, rare and ready to enjoy at just about any event, good buying at $110 – 140k
  • 1922 Bugatti Type 29/30, the oldest 8 cylinder Bugatti in existence, 1 of only 2 survivors and ex Bonhams Quail ’15 $1 million, good buying at $800k – 1 million
  • 1923 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost, superb and rare and a concours gold standard car at $300 – 400k
  • 1941 Packard 180 Custom Sport Limousine, 1 of just 4, impeccable history, surefire preservation class winner and worth a look at $125 – 150k

Scottsdale has always been an important sale for offering Mercedes 300SL and Gooding are offering no less than five of them;

  • 1954 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing, lovely original car in a wonderful shade of Cream, good buying at $1.1 – 1.3 million
  • 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing, a well maintained example with an older restoration and possibly good buying at $1.1 – 1.4 million
  • 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster, gorgeous in a pale blue and noted to be stunning so good value at $1 – 1.2 million
  • 1960 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster, a lovely restored example with a hardtop and good buying at $1.1 – 1.3 million
  • 1963 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster, ultimate spec and pretty much perfect, likely market correct at $1.6 – 1.8 million

Mid century classics have always been prominent at all Goodings sales and this years Scottsdale highlights are;

  • 1951 Alfa Romeo 1900C Sprint, ex Fangio and unique, older restoration but still lovely, expensive at $500 – 700k
  • 1953 Allard J2X, a brilliant vintage race car and ready to go, good fun at $350 – 450k
  • 1953 Ferrari 212 Europa Pininfarina Coupe, fresh from a $500 Epifani restoration and good buying at $900k – 1.3 million for what is a very elegant car. A bargain if below a mil.
  • 1954 Ferrari 250GT Europa, an exceptional example of a useful road racer and market priced at $1.6 – 2 million
  • 1955 Porsche 356 Speedster, a totally original barnfind, the Porsche nuts will go gaga for this, estimate is just $200 – 275k which it should slay
  • 1963 Iso Grifo A3/L Protitipo, unique example and ticks all the boxes so while $1.1 – 1.5 may seem expensive its likely to increase in the long term
  • 1965 Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GTA, an actual racer in period and claimed authenticity, ready to race and value at $300 – 400k
  • 1967 Ferrari 330GTS, a nice original example of a rare car at $2 – 2.4 million, seems reasonable to me
  • 1970 Iso Grifo 7 litre, quite rare and looks good in Silver, value at $600 – 700k9.1 points, concours winner, matching numbers. Porsche COA. Exceptional.
  • 1970 Maserati Ghibli Spider, a lovely example with a 5 speed and oh so elegant in Silvery Blue, well worth a look at $900k – 1.2 million

Like all major auctions, modern collectibles are now everywhere and there are a few here that are going to test the market;

  • 1994 Porsche 911/964 Turbo 3.6S Flachbau, yeah its rare but is it rare enough because you can’t actually drive it in the USA (show and display only), $600 – 700k
  • 2009 Ferrari 599GTB, 1 of 20 6 speeds in the USA, how much value does one put on manual vs auto, $500k?, maybe okay at $500 – 600k
  • 2012 Lexus LFA Nurburgring, very few made but $900k – 1.2 million would double previous sales, one to watch
  • 2014 Pagani Huayra, 1 of just 100 and stunning, previous sales have seen high 1s but nothing like this cars estimate of $2.2 – 2.6 million, arguably worth it though
  • 2015 McLaren P1, like new and market correct at $1.8 – 2.2 million

As for affordable classics, there are a few and they are an eclectic bunch with something for everyone;

  • 1947 Lincoln Continental, 1 of just 11 and restored to excellent condition, good buying at $40 – 60k
  • 1953 Kaiser Dragon, a forgotten marque but a competitor to Cadillacs best and great value for a very rare car at $70 – 90k and no reserve
  • 1956 Deutsch-Bonnet, the very meaning of rare, and complete with Sebring provenance, just 65bhp but lots of fun and eligible for every event for just $100 – 130k
  • 1960 Volkswagen Type 2 23 Window bus, freshly restored and sensational, $100 – 130k, the market have been going nuts for these
  • 1964 Pontiac GTO Convertible, a well maintained slice of muscle car history, open top thrills for $80 – 100k
  • 1966 Lotus Cortina Mark I, a rare US delivered Lotus Cortina, superb and worth a look at $130 – 160k
  • 1970 Mercedes 300SEL 6.3 Saloon, 1 of just 642 US market cars, one of the greatest fast saloons ever made, $120 – 150k and no reserve for a restored example sounds good
  • 1985 Porsche 944 Turbo Cup, very rare and authentic, if this were a 911 it would be 10 times the price, a potential future investment at just $80 – 100k and no reserve.

Gooding have pulled out all the stops and this shapes as their best Scottsdale auction in years. Bravo.

RESULTS

Like RM Sotheby’s, Gooding managed to secure the consignment of a Jaguar D-Type and in Goodings case it was a very nice privateer raced example in original red. Goodings D-Type mixed originality and authenticity with a lack of big name race history, it unfortunately failed to sell at a slightly high but still acceptable $10 – 12 million but whereas RM Sotheby’s put all their eggs in one basket, Gooding had another maquee lot in the Pininfarina bodied Ferrari 275GTB. The latter car sold at $8.085 million which seemed perfectly reasonable for a unique example with lots of history and despite a change of livery AND a few minor modifications, it should retain its value. One would think a great restoration by MPI or another great shop will be in its near future and concours success will be almost guaranteed there after.

The 275GTB and other multi million dollar cars helped Gooding to a $49 million gross sale total, almost 50% more than 2017s sale total. Some of the big dollar car results also have much that we can learn from, the 250GT Cabriolet Serie 1 failing to meet the $7 million low estimate, a bullish figure but worth it for one of the best examples extant. The 500 Mondial was a highly usable car that could be an entry anywhere and despite the bullish $5 – 7 million estimate, Gooding managed to get a deal done at $4.455 million which was market correct. Finally the Bugatti Type 55 was a good but not perfect example and Gooding worked hard to get a $4.07 million sale which is market correct.

Big sellers were topped by the Volkswagen Kombi 23 window at $220k, fully 69% above its estimate, which while a fine example, is a huge amount of money. Otherwise the Porsche 911 2.4 Targa sold very well at $313k or 21% above estimate and the Ferrari 330GTS at $2.53 million (5% above). Mid estimate sellers were the 1953 Ferrari 212 Europa at $1.067 million, 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster at $1.083 million, 1960 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster at $1.1 million, 1954 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing at $1.155 million and 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing at $1.32 million.

Cars that sold poorly were the 2015 McLaren P1 at $1.732 million (3% below), 2014 Pagani Huayra at $2.09 million (-5%), 2012 Lexus LFA at $825k (-8%), 1953 Allard J2X at $286k (-18%) and the 1968 Ferrari 206GT at $368k (-26%). Other than the D-Type and the Ferrari 250GT Cabriolet Serie 1 there were a few no sales including the 1954 Ferrari 250GT Europa, 1961 Ferrari 250GT Pininfarina Spider Serie II, 1970 Maserati Ghibli Spider, 1922 Bugatti Type 29/30 Oval, 1963 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster and 2015 Porsche 918.

Gooding managed to attain success at Scottsdale in 2018 and they must take impetus into Amelia in a few weeks time.
