Olympia, Warwick Road, London, UK

Bonhams have traditionally hosted a number of boutique sales each year along with a series of clearance sales, often offering between 70 and 100 lots of varying qualities. These sales have moved around with the only common link that they have been held in December but returned to their original venue, Olympia in 2016. 2007s sale was an immense success with the oldest surviving (and only London – Brighton eligible) Rolls-Royce 10HP for $7.3 million and while that success hasn’t been repeated, cars such as the infamous ex Le Mans 1955 1953 Austin-Healey 100S have sold well at $1.3 million in 2010. The return to Olympia has seen a further downgrade in the quality of consignments but it is still a place to find very interesting British collectibles.

Year – location – sold/ offered/ (%) – Total gross US$ – High sale

2007 – Olympia – 71/103 (69%) – $16,584,845 – $7,266,964 1904 Rolls-Royce 10HP
2008 – Olympia – 57/96 (59%) – $3,739,747 – $513,129 1931 Bentley 8 Litre
2009 – Olympia – 64/82 (78%) – $4,872,082 – $721,337 1906 Rolls-Royce 20HP
2010 – Brooklands – 40/68 (59%) – $5,705,170 – $1,323,915 1953 Austin-Healey 100S
2011 – Brooklands – 55/75 (73%) – $5,764,559 – $692,059 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing
2012 – Brooklands – 60/72 (83%) – $5,453,661 – $749,720 1931 Invicta S-Type
2014 – Oxford – 46/64 (72%) – $3,382,352 – $420,474 1912 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost
2015 – Hendon – 69/87 (79%) – $5,358,409 – $505,561 1939 Bentley 4.25 Litre
2016 – Olympia – 45/81 (56%) – $3,960,516 – $453,814 1967 Aston Martin DB6

2017 – Olympia – 52/91 (57%) – $4,148,276 – $619,297 1964 Aston Martin DB5

An eclectic selection of lots is lead by the Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa Replica created in Florida from a 250 GTE and 330GT 2+2 and supposedly a faithful replica. Its difficult to assess how much one should pay for a replica such as this but the 300 – 400k Pounds ($400 – 533k US) is probably market correct for a car built from real Ferrari components. An Aston DB5 in supposedly well maintained condition is on offer at 350 – 450k Pounds ($466 – 600k US) but a thorough inspection must be sought before bidding and if everything checks out it might be good value but wary of serious shortcomings. Another classic is the final 1966 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud III Cabriolet that was sold to Malaysia before a return to the UK and eventual restoration.  Finally a S2 Continental Flying Spur Saloon is slightly expensive but possibly okay at 220 – 260k pounds ($293 – 346k US). A 1948 Allard M1 DHC that is in better condition than when new is an awkward but cheap entry to classic ownership at 50 – 60k Pounds ($67 – 80k US).

Full classics are lead by the 1934 Alvis Speed 20SC which is a rather formal but still quite good looking DHC at 80 – 100k Pounds ($107 – 133k US) and1924 Vauxhall 30-98OE Wensum Open Tourer replica which was built up in the UK from an original Vauxhall frame to replicate one of the lost works racers, hard to value but 180 – 200k Pounds ($240 – 267k US) seems about right. Finally the 1936 Rolls Royce Phantom III Touring Limousine is a fascinating car whose history includes use by General Montgomery during WW2, 150 – 180k Pounds ($200 – 240k US) doesn’t seem too bad for such an immense car.

Truly fascinating examples of modern cars abound and include an immaculate 1986 Ford RS200 that is interesting buying with lots of potential upside at 140 – 160k Pounds ($187 – 213k US). Two very rare modern cars include the 1991 Alfa Romeo SZ in classic Red over Tan, great buying at 45 – 65k Pounds ($60 – 87k US) and a 2006 Renault Clio V6 Sport 255, a mid engined hatchback, at 40 – 50k Pounds ($53 – 67k US), both are future collectibles and have lots of upside. Two further cheap exotics that are interesting are the 1970 Volkswagen Early Bay Container Wagon, a very rare Australian built Kombi which has been restored as a MPV and offers interesting options at just 25 – 30k Pounds ($33 – 40k US). The other is perhaps my favourite car of the sale, a rare and rather polarising exotic, the 1970 Monteverdi 375L at 25 – 30k Pounds ($33 – 40k US) offering lots of post flower power glam.

Whatever its status there is plenty to interest anyone in this sale.

RESULTS – $4,148,276

Bonhams returned to Olympia to offer a selection of interesting classics with something for most buyers at most price levels. The selection of classics was lead by the 1964 Aston Martin DB5 Saloon at 463k pounds ($619k US) which was 3% over the high estimate and potentially good buying for a car that may have needs that need exploring. Other cars that sold very well were lead by the 1970 Monteverdi 375L which sold for 57,500 pounds ($77k US) or 92% over estimate and was still good buying, the 1951 Jaguar Mark V DHC sold well at 69k pounds ($92k) or 37% over estimate, ding a 5 speed manual gearbox, vendor ’11, engine rebuilt by Rothwell Engineering, V5C and MoT. Elsewhere the 1996 Jaguar XJS surprised with a 28k pounds ($37k US) or 73% over estimate, the 1931 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Ranalah DHC went for 129k pounds ($173k US) or 29% over and the 1929 Invicta 4.5 litre Tourer at 165k pounds ($221k US) or 27% showing that the market for old cars isn’t dead yet. A good seller but also a good buy was the low mileage 2002 Ferrari 360 Spider at 100k pounds ($134k US) or 11% over estimate.

Four of the star lots sold for mid estimate territory and they include the Argentinian 1998 Bugatti Type 55 Replica, a good example for sure but still never a real car, that sold for 214k pounds ($287k US). Otherwise the 2004 Ferrari 575M sold well at 125k pounds ($167k US) although it was a nice car and rare in RHD with the HGTC pack, the 1960 Bentley S2 Continental Flying Spur Saloon was a rare example in very good condition which sold fairly at 102k pounds ($137k US) and the 1961 Jaguar E-Type Series I Roadster which did relatively well at 149k pounds ($200k US). More than a few cars sold fairly cheaply although many were cheap used cars including the 1955 Daimler Conquest Convertible at 9k pounds ($12k US) or 63% below estimate, 1959 BMW Isetta 300 at 14k pounds ($19k US) or 39% below and the 1934 Alvis Speed 20SC at 64k pounds ($86k US) or 20% below estimate.

Where the sale was hurt is that six of the expensive lots on offer failed to find new homes, among them the 1962 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa replica, 1966 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III Cabriolet, 1961 Bentley S2 Continental Flying Spur Saloon, 1924 Vauxhall 30-98 OE Wensum Open Tourer, 1936 Rolls-Royce Phantom III Touring Limousine and 1986 Ford RS200. The difference between this sales success and failure was the sale of some or all of these cars and that meant Bonhams was a mere 5% ahead on the overall gross when the dust settled. Bonhams will be relatively happy with the overall result and considering the sale and the consignments that is more than acceptable.
