Artcurial Paris – 5th November 2017

http://www.artcurial.com/en/asp/searchresults.asp?st=D&sale_no=3243&ps=18&pg=1#a_10617341

Artcurial host regular estate sales in every category including automobiles and these are nothing like the Retromobile sale in February each year. As with many estate sales they are only held when there are enough quality lots to offer while the quality is usually based on the offering of lesser value items with the occasional elite item. The results list below belies these results and while $8 million in 2015 and 11 million in 2013 were nothing to sneeze at, few of the cars or results were top of the market and yet that lack of pzazz means that anyone looking for values should certainly take note.

Date – Sold/Offer/(%) – Gross sale (US$) – Top sale (US$)

2007 25/47 (53%) $1,024,108 $203,481 1973 Sbarro Mille Miglia

2015 59/73 (81%) $8,068,117 $911,194 1958 Mercedes Benz 300SL
2016 60/74 (81%) $4,263,791 $728,770 1964 Aston Martin DB5

2017 58/79 (73%) $6,688,236 $1,677,302 1925 Bugatti Type 35

2017s year closing auction follows Artcurials offer of the Mercedes-Benz France collection and offers an interesting selection of French and Italian exotics, mostly in the lower to mid price levels. Leading the way are two pukka star lots including a Bugatti Type 35 Grand Prix car and a Bentley R-Type Continental, both legitimate star lots at any auction. The Bugatti is a very early example of an early un-supercharged Type 35, this particular example was delivered to Italy and later rebuilt under another number before discovery by noted car hunter Corrado Cupellini. Now known to be one of just two survivors of the many Type 35s to be delivered to Italy, this example ticks all of the boxes for collectibility but for the fact that it is a very old car with limited appeal for many younger collectors. Certainly looking the part and with cast iron provenance due to the Laugier report the estimate of 1 – 1.35 million EURO ($1.17 – 1.58 million US) seems very cheap.  The other star lot is the 1954 Bentley R-Type Continental Sports Saloon, 1 of 43 built in left hand drive. A lovely car in Smoke Green, this example has been well maintained and offers good buying at 800k – 1 million EURO ($936k – 1.17 million US), so long as the condition checks out. Four of these stately saloons have been offered at auction this year and they offer an immensely amount of very usable 1950s sportscar for the money, if you like the Cadillac styling they are great value and you wouldn’t regret either of these two cars on offer.

Plenty of cars are on offer at a mid range price level but the 1968 Citroen DS21 Cabriolet is a highlight at 180 – 225k EURO ($210 – 263k US) and with its original Chapron bodywork it is one of just 150 ever made. Noted to have been restored in Metallic light Blue, there is also the option of returning it to its original Burgundy and whatever option one would take this car is a fabulous if polarising French Cabriolet and the estimate is bang on what other examples have sold for this year. Some of my favourite cars are the examples on offer for under 100k EURO, my absolute favourite of that category is the 1965 Lancia Flavia Sport Zagato. Noted to have just two owners and one of only 500 examples ever built, it is estimated at 65 – 85k EURO ($76 – 99k US) and good buying if properly restored (as claimed.) Two cars at 50 – 70k EURO ($58 – 82k US) offer charm and interest and they are the 1981 Porsche 924 Carrera GT (1 of just 406) although it has relatively high miles and the 1962 Alfa Romeo Montreal that is claimed to be restored.

One of the cheapest cars on offer is the 1934 Bianchi S9 Camionette and like other old trucks it is a fascinating old vehicle with much to recommend at a very cheap price. Said to be restored this truck offers plenty of appeal at 25 – 35k EURO ($29 – 41k US) and it looks to be a wonderful buy as does the 1978 Lancia Gamma Coupe at 8 – 12k EURO ($9 – 14k US) that is noted to be in beautiful largely original condition with just one owner from new. Artcurial are offering a fascinating selection of cars with loads of appeal at pretty cheap prices and for that they should be congratulated.

RESULTS – $6,688,236

Artcurial had mixed results at their December sale in Paris based on the sale of the two key lots which raised a little more than a third of the total revenue. A seemingly cheap estimate for the 1925 Bugatti Type will have helped to ensure its sale at a perfectly reasonable 1.44 million EURO ($1.677 million US) although this was ostensibly 7% over the top estimate. Otherwise the Bentley R-Type Continental sold at a decent and again reasonable 792k EURO ($924k US) which is pretty right for a car that may need several hundred k in restoration if that is what the new owner wants to do. Elsewhere the 1896 Peugeot 3.5/4HP sold at a 161% over high estimate 209k EURO ($243k US) and the 1908 Lion Peugeot sold for 46k EURO ($54k US) or 55% over its high estimate, the two best results of the entire sale coming from cars that are decidedly not flavour of the month. Contrary to this is the non sale of all of the modern Porsche’s at some pretty steep estimates, the 1961 BMW Isetta 300 at 19k EURO ($22k US) and the 1969 Marcos 3000GT at 36k EURO ($42k US), the latter two at 24% and 11% below low estimate respectively.

Results of interest included the 1968 Citroen DS21 Cabriolet at 209k EURO ($243k US) which was mid estimate for a lovely car. Other mid estimate sales were the 1981 Porsche 924 Carrera GT at 50k EURO ($58k US) and the 1972 Alfa Romeo Montreal at 55k EURO ($64k US). Otherwise two of my fave cars sold about where expected, the 1978 Lancia Gamma Coupe at 7,152 EURO ($8,337 US) or 6% below estimate and the 1934 Bianchi S9 Camionette at 23,840 EURO ($27,790 US) or 5% below. Artcurial did well in the current market although like every auction company they will need to consider the mix of lots, especially the number and percentage of modern collectibles which seem to be everywhere at the moment.
