6PM 5th & 6th October 2017

The Hershey Lodge, 325 University Drive, Hershey, Pennsylvania 17033, USA

Hershey has been the site of one of the worlds two leading swap meets, an anachronism in todays online world but a real life marketplace for rare parts and ephemera to delight any automobile fan. First held by the AACAs Eastern Division way back in ’55, Hershey offers 9,000 flea market spaces, over 1,000 car corral spaces, and approximately 1,500 show cars and remains easily the largest such event with only Beaulieu in the UK coming close. Aside from its place in automobile folklore Hershey is also famous for its chocolate with the towns motto “the Sweetest Place on Earth”, likely a useful sidetrack if all the cars start to dull the senses. RM have held a Hershey auction annually since 2007, after a series of auctions by The Hershey LLC and as with their other sales they have used a level of professionalism and marketing to sell a selection that is always heavily slanted towards vintage and post vintage American full classics.

Duesenbergs have always featured strongly, taking half of the past decades top sales gongs while other marques include Marmon, the worlds oldest car (the De Dion Bouton et Trepardoux), Chrysler, Cadillac and Pierce-Arrow. These cars are in keeping with the general category of the event and the average age of the cars on offer is 1936, approx. 30 – 40 years older than most offerings at Monterey but totally on par for previous editions of the Hershey auction. General volumes have hovered around the $10 – 15 million mark and this years sale .

RM Sothebys had immense amount of success at Hershey this year and posted the second best results, only beaten by the 2015 sale. These results were built on selling 131 of the 142 lots on offer, no doubt helped by offering 88 of them at no reserve. RM had immense success with the cars from the Thomas Derro collection with the 1933 Pierce-Arrow Silver Arrow selling for $2.31 million, d’Ieteren bodied 1933 Duesenberg for $1.485 million and the Kirchhoff Towncar 1932 Duesenberg for $594k. The last mentioned sold for 21% below low estimate but the other results were mid estimate territory and good results in the current market.

Other excellent results were the sale of the 1935 Packard Twelve at $495k, the 1936 Cadillac V16 at $715k and the little 1961 AMC Metropolitan 1500 Convertible at $74k, fully 46% over its high estimate. The best result of the sale was the 1937 White 706 Yellowstone bus that blew through the high estimate to sell for $165k, that’s 312% more than expected and a good sign that non traditional collectibles are often a good bet when the usual candidates are fully priced. As with any sale that is based on no reserve lots there were some bargains, most notably the 1926 Buick Master Six at a 70% below $6,050, 1914 Overland Model 79 at $9,350 or 63% below estimate and the 1880 Weisenhorn Mail Flesher at 59% below estimate or $10,350. Two of the richer lots also sold fairly cheaply, the 1910 Stanley Model 70 Touring at $121k (26% below estimate) and the rebodied 1930 Isotta-Fraschini Tipo 8A at $302k (24% below).

RM Sothebys must be pleased with the success they achieved at Hershey and for that they should be congratulated.
