Bonhams Zoute – 5th October 2017

Knokke-Heist on the Belgian coast is the site for the Zoute GP, a celebration of all things motoring. This years event includes the Zoute Top Marques, a display of the worlds premium car brands, the Zoute Concours d’Elegance, Zoute Rally, Zoute GT Tour and the Bonhams auction. First held in 2013 and annually since then, this sale has offered a mix of cars from the 1950s thru today with the average age of consignments ranging from the 1960s in the first two sales and 1970s in the last two. Like most of Bonhams boutique sales, this particular offers on average 40 cars and yet a testament to the quality of consignments is both the total gross revenue and the high sale each year.

Year – Sold/ Offered (%) – Gross Total US$ – High Sale US$

2013 – 29/45 (64%) – $3,589,938 – $686,440 1956 Maserati A6G/54
2014 – 30/35 (86%) – $5,349,337 – $872,022 1989 Ferrari F40
2015 – 32/45 (71%) – $7,513,096 – $1,012,638 2011 Ferrari 599SA Aperta
2016 – 29/31 (94%) – $5,056,925 – $653,361 1955 Porsche 356 Pre-A Speedster

2017 – 26/32 (81%) – $6,489,161 – $1,404,840 – 2017 Mercedes-Maybach G65

2017s sale is in a similar vein to previous years with a selection of 32 fine classics and an average age of 1974 and a likely gross in the $5 – 7 million range as is traditional. Leading the way are two Ferrari, a stunning 365GTC in Grigio Mahmoud that is both rare, essentially perfect and while the estimate of $861k – 1.026 million might be a little strong it can’t be too high for a car in the reported condition. The other example on offer is the Blu Scuro Daytona, another excellent car at $826 – 944k and worth a look although the price does seems perhaps $50k too high based on recent sales. Elsewhere the Jaguar XJ220 is a 1990s flashback and like most, has low mileage although unlike many this example is in fantastic condition and while the estimate of $413 – 531k is a little steep for these cars they sell for the promise of future collectibility which hasn’t occurred yet but who knows.

A rather weird collectible is the Mercedes-Maybach G650 Laundalette, 1 of 99 examples produced and offered for charity with all funds to Laureus Sport for Good, baring in mind the new price is $550k, who would bet that it wouldn’t sell for more than a million in any currency?  At a much lower price point are three very nice cars, firstly the 1967 Porsche 911S Sunroof Coupe in lovely Irish Green and fully restored, it offers good buying at $177 – 236k. A lovely Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Serie 750 presents well in the colour scheme it was restored in and $100 – 147k seems very reasonable. Finally the white Austin Healey 3000 (lot 25) looks fantastic and likely great buying at $71 – 94k although anyone interested needs to check the actual condition and price accordingly.

Bonhams have come up with an interesting and rather boutique collection of lots yet rather than simply attending the sale, one could do worse than actually partaking in the event.

RESULT – $6,489,161

Bonhams returned to Zoute for the fifth time and this was among the most successful of their sales at the venue. By dollar value it was second fiddle to the 2015 sales $7.513 million but this was achieved with fewer cars offered and sold for a fantastic result of $250k per car as compared to 2015s $234,784. Leading the way was the 2017 Mercedes-Maybach G650 Laundalette offered for charity with funds going to the Laureus sport for good foundation and while it was a risky offering it rewarded the faith given to it with a spectacular 1.2 million EURO ($1.405 million US) sales price. As with any charity lot it is difficult to assess how much was paid for the car and how much was essentially a donation but whatever the outcome it is unlikely that another Mercedes-Maybach will ever reach these value levels.

Ferrari’s were the other two star lots although they had disparate success with the 1968 365GTC doing well to sell for a mid estimate 805k EURO ($942k US) and the 1973 Daytona failing at a reported high bid of $767k although quite how legitimate that bid was is unknown since it was awfully close to where it could have sold. Elsewhere several cars exceeded their high estimates by considerable amounts, none more so than the 2000 BMW Z8 which sold for a 32% over estimate €316k  ($370k US) while a 1961 Chevrolet Corvette C1 Roadster went for a 28% over estimate €115k ($134k US) and a 1928 Rally ABC Sports 600 at a 20% over estimate  €143k ($168k US). The two latter sales are reasonable for the right car although its the BMW Z8 that is fascinating and it will be interesting to monitor further sales to see if this is a new value level or just a single example of exuberance.

Several of the key lots sold for mid estimate prices including the 1957 Porsche 356A 1600 Speedster D at €391k ($458k US) and 1993 Jaguar XJ220 at €391k ($457k US), both actually well sold considering their fairly bullish estimates. One of my favourite cars, the Irish Green 1967 Porsche 911S Sunroof Coupe managed to sell for a 6% over estimate €212k ($249k US). The only really poor seller was the 1955 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible at a 21% under estimate €28k ($32k US) while two significant no sales were the 1957 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Serie 750 Coupe at a reported high bid of $94k and the 2003 Aston Martin DB AR1 Roadster at a reported high bid of $236k, both of which should have seen them sold.

Overall these results were rather good and Bonhams will be justly pleased.
