Bonhams Chantilly 10th September

http://www.bonhams.com/auctions/24129/?department=MOT-CAR

Patrick Peter was one of the three race organisers (along with Jurgen Barth and Stephane Ratel) of the uber successful BPR GT series back in the 1990s before the FIA took over the management in 1999. Peter Auto took his organisation skills to the classic racing market and soon brought his professionalism and organisation skills to events such as the Le Mans classic and Spa Classic, eventually offering an entire season of events that make up a series enticing entrants and spectators alike. Peter Auto branched out and hosted its first concours at Chantilly in 2014 in association with Richard Mille and instantly created a European concours to compete with the best anywhere.

The second event saw a Bonhams auction offered and they presented a selection of 27 exotics topped by a storied ex Le Mans Lorraine-Dietrich and the Bugatti Type 101 Coupe frequent flyer that both failed to sell and two cars that sold well indeed, the Bugatti Type 57 d’Ieteren Cabriolet at $1.4 million and the Maserati Boomerang concept at $3.7 million, both huge amounts. 2016 saw Bonhams return with a random selection of modern and mid century classics along with a collection of Horch that had been shopped for many years with varying claims of originality (Bonhams admitted they weren’t) that actually sold well for what they were. As for top seller, Bonhams offered a very rare Mercedes 500k Roadster that was a forced sale to settle the original owners claim theft claim (stolen in 1940s) and the sale bucked the trend of 500/540k no sales and sold for $5.9 million.

Year – Sold/ Offered/(%) – Total Gross (US$) – High sale

2015 19/27 (70%) $10,221,507.00 $3,714,523.00 1971 Maserati Boomerang
2016 17/27 (63%) $10,312,454.00 $5,921,097.00 1935 Mercedes-Benz 500K Roadster

2017 19/34 (56%) $2,173,090 $453,537 1953 Aston Martin DB2

This years sale is highlighted by a Mercedes-Benz 300SL that was converted to a replica of the unique Paul O’Shea SLS, a car that apparently disappeared back in the late 1950s. Not the only SLS replica, this car is neither original nor particularly historic and while the specification is cool it remains as true as ever that original or at least in period is worth much more than modern replication and as such it seems really expensive at 1.5 – 2.5 million EURO ($1.6 – 2.7 million US). Elsewhere there is the 853 Coupe that was withdrawn from last years auction and another Spezial Roadster, both at around the 800k – 1 million EURO ($900k – 1.3 million US) mark and a Bugatti Type 43 Replica at 500 – 700k EURO ($545 – 763k US) which are fine for their beauty but expensive for what are fake cars.

My favourite car of the sale is the beautiful verde Maserati 3500GT Vignale Spider at 800k – 1 million EURO ($872k – 1.09 million US) while the Rolls-Royce 20/25HP Barker at 200 – 300k EURO ($218 – 327k US) is expensive but beautiful. A nice Citroen DS21 Le Caddy Convertible at 340 – 380k EURO ($370 – 414k US) and the Ferrari 328 Conciso at an unknown amount are also worth a look but otherwise the 35 cars on offer are interesting but nothing to get too excited about and there is the conspicuous lack of a true marquee lot. Bonhams will have to work harder next year to ensure this sale doesn’t become just another auction full of filler.

RESULTS

As discussed in the introduction Bonhams Chantilly saw neither the quality nor diversity of either of the two foundation events and where they were $10 million sales this years was just $2 million and that was with 25% extra cars on offer. The big dollar lots such as the 300sl, Horches, Maseratis and Bugatti Type 44 failed to garner much interest and fully 15 cars failed to sell, from just 34 on offer or just 56% (as compared to 2016s 63% and 2017s 70%). The top seller was a 1953 Aston DB2 DHC at 402k EUR ($455k US) and there were just 2 of the 19 cars that sold that exceeded the high estimate, pretty much everything else failing well below their estimate. Even the 328 Conciso that was offered as a piece of Ferrari folklore sold for 115k EURO ($129k US) which may have been ample for a 328 based special but was symbolic of a sale trying to find its way. Where was the unique or the grand pre-war? Bonhams can and MUST do better if they want to host another Chantilly sale.
