Bonhams Goodwood Revival 9th September 2017

Bonhams have been the partner to the Goodwood Race circuit since its re-establishment in 1996 and the original Festival spawned two further events, the Revival and Members Meeting. The Revival sale has been a success for Bonhams and their re-invigoration of the automobile department only ensured further success. 2012 saw them offer the Mercedes-Benz S-Type at a record amount along with a collection of Maseratis, 2013 was the turn of the Alfa 8C/35 to set records as was 2014s Lagonda LG45R. Unfortunately 2015 saw Bonhams struggle to offer a top flite selection of cars and the total gross dipped dramatically and dipped even further in 2016 despite them setting another record with a Porsche 550RS.

Year – sold/ offered (%) – Total Gross (US$) – Top Sale (US$)

2015 54/83 (65%) $16,758,352.00 $1,677,862.00 1965 Aston Martin DB5
2016 59/85 (69%) $15,883,826.00 $6,118,542.00 1956 Porsche 550RS

2017 77/112 (69%) $13,907,676 $801,155 1973 Ferrari 365GTB/4

2017s sale is essentially the same as the previous two with a selection that is interesting but nothing spectacular. Four cars and an aeroplane lead the sale in 2017, a perfectly normal Rosso Daytona at 550 – 600k Pounds ($709 – 774k US) and the extremely rare De Havilland D84 Dragon 6 – 8 seater Biplane at no listed estimate. The beautiful Silver Bentley R Type Continental and the Aston Martin DB5 are both reasonably priced at 500 – 700k Pounds ($645 – 900k US) but possibly require a restoration depending on the purchaser and that cost must be factored in. Elsewhere there is a very expensive Bentley S1 Continental Park Ward that has been converted to a DHC and while the genuine cars are a $1 – 1.5 million proposition, I don’t see this car making its $645 – 775k estimate.

Three interesting cars on offer are the Rolls-Royce Silver Dawn Pininfarina Coupe that wont be to everyone’s taste but is glamorous, unique and a ticket to any event, anywhere. Another interesting car is the 911 Carrera RS Touring which is claimed to be in immaculate condition and seems relatively cheap although like all Carrera RS, a check of provenance and documentation is recommended. The third interesting car on offer is a Jaguar XJR-15, one of just 50 of these super cool early 1990s V12 supercars and all three of these cars are estimated at around the 350 – 500k Pounds ($450 – 600k) US mark and offer good buying. Several replicas are lead by the Lister Knobbly continuation at 350 – 450k Pounds ($450 – 580k) US and while this and others are eligible for great events such as Goodwood they dont have the long term investment value of the originals.

Aside from the Lister, racing cars are lead by the famous Ford Galaxie 500, a rare Crossle, a Ferrari 360 Challenge racecar and a rare twin cam ’69 Ford Escort, all offering the buyer an opportunity to own and race in historic events. Pre-war cars are lead by the ex. Monte Carlo Rally ’34 Lagonda LG45 at 250 – 300k Pounds ($320 – 380k US) and great buying for a very usable car with a history. There is also an interesting but flawed 3 litre Bentley and a beautiful but underpowered Aston Martin 1.5 Litre Mark II Sports Saloon at 180 – 200k Pounds ($230 – 280k US). Otherwise there are Bentleys, Jaguars and Lamborghinis aplenty although many are little more than filler and it is hard to see this auction matching either of the past two sales.

RESULTS

Bonhams returned to Goodwood for their 2017 Revival sale and unlike 2016 failed to offer a marquee lot and yet they managed to sell $13.9 million worth of stock, just 12.4% down on last years results. Unfortunately it took offering rough a third more cars (112 vs 85) and selling the same sell through rate of 69% which is pretty average in the current environment. The lack of a marquee lot didn’t mean there was any lack of interesting machinery, especially those cars from the collection of Gentleman Jack Sears, on offer although there were also plenty that was just filler.

The most extraordinary lot was the unique and wonderfully historic Ford Galaxie 500 Touring car racer that more than doubled the top estimate to sell at 472k Pounds ($624k US) yet its hard to say that it was bad value even at that since it has potential for use that trancends its standing. Indeed this car has much to value since it is stated to have impeccable provenance, remarkable completeness for a racecar and a fabulous story so why not since every type of event will open doors to a car of this caliber. Other cars that excellent were the 1986 Mercedes 190E-2.3 that managed to sell at 25k Pounds ($33k US) or 68% more than expected, for a car with 75,000 miles on the dial seemed like all the money. Another car to excel was the 14th Mini Cooper S produced, here offered in restored condition which likely makes up for a fairly hard life although 63k Pounds ($83k US) was some 66% more than expected and a lot of money indeed, maybe the start of a trend but likely not. Finally a very grand Rolls-Royce Phantom III Limousine did well to make 171k Pounds ($227k US) or 43% over the estimate.

Otherwise Bonhams did well to get 606k Pounds ($801k) for a Ferrari Daytona which is nothing to sniff at in the current market, another fabulously original Bentley R-Type Continental sold for a pretty low 561k Pounds ($742k) as did a Aston Martin DB5 Saloon. Both of these cars may need a restoration at some point but they can also be used to just drive and as such they have mellowed like an old wine or comfortable shoe. The lovely Blu Facel-Vega sold for a mid estimate 315k Pounds ($416k US) while the very rare 1929 Aston Martin Sports managed to sell at 203k Pounds ($268k US) unlike the 1934 Mark II Saloon brethren which failed to generate much enthusiasm and didn’t sell. The unique Land Rover halftrack sold but 33% below expected at 33k Pounds ($43k US) while the very rare Jaguar XJ-15 also struggled to 271k Pounds ($356k US), perhaps too rare to generate much interest?

Otherwise many of the replica’s, continuations and general weirdness that was present at this years sale was generally a failure, Lister Knobbly continuation, Bedford Tanker and two of three aeroplanes and elsewhere the sale looked like merely a clearance sale which should have been the province of the Beaulieu sale a week earlier. Bonhams did do well with this years sale and but for one true marquee lot would have blown last years sale out of the water although it is concerning that this was the third Goodwood sale in 2017 to fail to really offer anything with true wow factor and yet Bonhams did manage to line up an excellent selection at both Scottsdale and the Quail so maybe these sales will take on some sort of secondary purpose. Can do better.
