RM London – 6th September 17

RM has had much success in London since their first sale back in 2007 with the Bernie Ecclestone collection in ’07, the record setting McLaren F1 in ’08,  the James Bond Aston Martin in ’11 or the two Tour de France in ’14 and ’15. Last years sale was supposedly lesser due to the lack of a true star lot but RM smashed it out of the park with a selection of superb Aston Martins and rare turbo Porsches. While the DB4GT sold where expected at $3.22 million, nobody expected the Riviera Blue 993 GT2 to sell for 2.5 times its high estimate at $2.47 million nor the (5 times high estimate) $1.3 million for the 964 Turbo S Lightweight. Indeed some 34 of the 88 lots on offer in 2016 were moderns, fully 40% and this auction truly set the trend for the following 12 months although few sales have seen these prices repeated.

2016 65/87 (75%) $29,000,013.00 $3,226,780.00 1960 Aston Martin DB4GT

2017 39/71 (55%) $9,218,864 $2,355,455 2004 Ferrari Enzo

RM returns to London in 2017 with an interesting collection of 71 cars, 30 of which are modern (42%) and just 5 are pre war (7%). The two star lots are the Hispano-Suiza K6 by Brandone and a Ferrari Enzo, both estimated at 1.6 – 1.8 million pounds (roughly $2 – 2.3 million), the former looked expensive back in 2013 when RM sold it for $2.25 million, roughly 300% more than any other K6 and despite it being a beautiful car I dont hear anyone arguing that the pre-war market is as strong as it was in 2013. The Enzo is priced right at the bottom end of Enzo values and yet it may struggle to get even that since it is non original in Tour de France Blu and that colour certainly doesn’t add to its beauty unlike Rosso, Giallo Fly or Nero, although an argument could be made for returning it to its original unique colour scheme of Matt Titanio as a good investment.

The requisite collection of Porsche’s number 15 and range from a 1953 356 Pre-A Coupe through to a 2003 996 series 911 GT3 RS. The most valuable is a classic 911 Carrera RS Lightweight which despite its recent “best private restoration ever” is yet another example of a Carrera racer that had a massive accident and one would be advised to check any documentation about the cars rebirth/ restoration and the 825k – 1 million Pounds ($1 – 1.3 million US) might be too rich. Other cool Porsche include a 911 Carrera RSR that was raced at Daytona and Sebring in ’97 and ’98 and remains highly original, ultimately the road car variants of the rare modern Porsches have traditionally had a massive premium over the race cars, as befits their ability to actually be driven and this is a pure racer, so 800 – 900k Pounds ($1 – 1.15 million) might be a step too far. A pukka road going rare 911 is the Black 993GT2 at 675 – 750k Pounds ($870 – 970k US) and this is much lower than equivalent cars have sold for although it does have history that includes a crash at the Nurburgring and like the Lightweight is good buying, but only if the damage was minor.

The nine Ferrari on offer includes the Enzo, as mentioned above, there is an F40 that is pretty ordinary in Rosso over Rosso at a fairly ordinary estimate of 775 – 975k Pounds ($1 – 1.25 million US) and an excellent restored 330GTC in Grigio Argento over Nero at a reasonable 475 – 525k Pounds ($612 – 677k US). Four interesting Aston Martins are on offer of which the two most interesting are the Speed Model Type C that is rare and eligible for anything but has had a hard life at 575 – 725k Pounds ($740 – 940k US) and the classic DB5 which is good buying at 785 – 900k Pounds ($1 – 1.15 million US). The Silver Chalice 1955 Bentley Continental R-Type is a lovely Grand Tourer and one of my favourite cars of the sale and cheap at 775 – 900k Pounds ($1 – 1.16 million US) while the two Gemballa would offer thrills for any Gen Xer at under $200k. Mecum sold a Lexus LFA at Monterey for $357k and RM are offering a Pearl Red example at 290 – 330k Pounds ($374 – 425k US) while a selection of modern Mercedes are headed by a very rare CLK DTM at 280 – 320k Pounds ($360 – 430k US).

RM must have been compromised by offering a Maranello sale alongside their usual Monterey and London auctions. Perhaps due to this, 2017s sale presents a smallish lot list although RM must be congratulated for offering something for everyone and at just about every price level.

RESULTS

RM returned to London with a lot list that lacked previous years excitement and while they offered some interesting lots they certainly weren’t of the expected level. The gross of $9.2 million was easily the lowest amount ever recorded and no less than 68% down on last years results. Sell through was also down at 55% compared to last years 71% and easily the worst sell-through yet. One of the few successes was one of the marquee lots, the Ferrari Enzo selling for a touch over high estimate at $2.355 million (1% over estimate) but the other, the Hispano-Suiza K6 was a failure at an amount that it could easily have seen it sold ($1.9 vs $2 million low estimate). The later was one of a number of cars that were supposedly bid to amounts that were more than enough to sell but didn’t while despite the number of people lauding the Enzo result it must be seen as being expensive for all the reasons discussed above.

Further examples of these cars that could, shoulda, woulda sold were the 1964 Shelby Cobra at $907k, 1997 Porsche 911/993 RSR at $907k, 1964 Aston-Martin DB5 “Vantage spec.” at $907k, 1988 Ferrari F40 at $940k and 1939 Aston-Martin Speed Model Type C at $680k, all of whom were close enough to have sold. That none of these cars did was either a sign of vendors that weren’t motivated or more likely a lack of real bids in the room and both are troubling for the market. Other than these there were a couple of cars that sold very well including the barn find Series III Jaguar E-Type at $46k (137% over), the Landie used in the James Bond movie Spectre at $300k (53% over) and the ex John Fitzpatrick 1971 Porsche 911E at $165k (41%).

Perhaps the best way of assessing RMs performance is that in 2016 they sold 8 million dollar cars, this year just 3, the others being the 993 series GT2 at $1.01 million and the lovely 1955 Bentley R-Type Continental at $1.08 million. This sale was a failure by any possible measure and RM must look to whether the Ferrari and Monterey auctions leave the London with enough quality consignments. RM need to look at what they achieved in 2016 and why because relearning those lessons (keeping the lot list fresh and offering what people want to buy) will ensure they make this sale the success it was in 2016 once more. Must do better.
