Bonhams returns to Beaulieu for their annual sale held in conjunction with the Beaulieu auto jumble, the second largest event of its kind behind Hershey. In keeping with the event Bonhams have traditionally kept any star lots for their Goodwood sale a week later and Beaulieu is instead reserved for the weird, the common and the project cars. Leading the way in 2017 is the Bluebird replica that offers lots of hilarity at 250 – 300k UKP although it lacks any sort of investor value. Two glamorous Vauxhall 30-98s seem about right at 220 – 260k UKP, especially the Grosvenor 2 seater with club racing heritage and the Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost Piccadilly Roadster with celebrity provenance is a touch high at the same price.

For the buyer looking for something unusual how about a Sheffield-Simplex, one of 3 in existence, a true vintage classic at 150 – 200k UKP or a Lagonda 2 litre Tourer at 120 – 150k, plenty of sporty motoring at that or even a Hispano-Suiza H6B Gill Cabriolet at 100 – 120k UKP, perhaps not the most glamorous example of the marque but fascinating nonetheless and good value at the money. The buyer with plenty of spare time might want to consider any of the project cars on offer such as the ’23 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost at 40 – 45k UKP, the Hotchkiss 686GS Modane Coupe (looks like a Touring design) and dirt cheap at 25 – 30k UKP or the unique Hermon Sports car at 20 – 30k UKP.

Aside from the aforementioned Lagonda and Hispano-Suiza, my favourite cars of the sale include the beautiful in Blue Jaguar E-Type at 130 – 160k UKP that looks like a good buy. Other faves include the very handsomely sporty Rolls-Royce Phantom II Continental at a bargain 90 – 100k UKP and the uber cool Invicta Black Prince Shooting Brake at 22 – 26k UKP. Offering anything from used cars to low level collectibles Bonhams are offering something for most budgets at their Beaulieu sale and that is a rare thing indeed.

Bonhams held excellent sales in 2014 and 2015 where they managed to gross more than $5 million although total gross dropped back to $3.9 million in 2016. Short of a lot totally overselling, this years sale with mirror 2016s result since a 80% sell through will leave the gross at approx. $3.7 million.

RESULTS

Bonhams managed to run a very good sale and sell 109 of the 127 on offer at Beaulieu and the 87% sell-through rate helped propel a total of $5.013 million. This was an excellent result for the auction and mainly based on selling all of the most expensive lots and a relatively good quantity of cars beating their high estimate. Two cars that were sold are the Napier Bluebird Replica and Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost Piccadilly Roadster Replica, both of which sold at mid estimate but could easily have failed. Two of the four Jaguar E-Types sold well at 11% and 22% over estimate (although the other two failed) and two of the three Vauxhall 30-98OEs sold at below estimate but showed that Bonhams could work hard to get the deal done.

Cars that surprised were the Hotchkiss which blew through its high estimate to sell at $54,977 (30% over), a Ford Capri 3000E at $29,106 (159% over), a very rare early Austin Seven Mini project car at $26,680 (171% over) and an Alfa Romeo Duetto at $65,487 (55% over). Certainly the two failures were the Ferrari 246GT and Sheffield-Simplex which both failed to get much attention. As for my favourite cars, the Rolls Phantom II Continental hit top estimate at $167,462, the Invicta Black Prince Shooting Brake at $22,005 (29% less than low estimate), Gill bodied Hispano-Suiza H6B Gill Tourer at a mid estimate $159,588 and Aston Martin 1.5 litre Cloverleaf at a mid estimate $99,746.

Bonhams Beaulieu has traditionally been changeable based upon their gross results with and its the third best result for the sale which is nothing to sneer at.
