Russo & Steele 17th – 19th August 2017

https://russoandsteele.com/featured-vehicles/

Russo & Steele return to Monterey where they are the elder statesmen of the auctions in the round set. Rather than the elegant, staid, very European sales at Bonhams, Gooding and RM these are loud, boisterous and lots of fun, although its all personal taste. With bidders agents, the auctioneer and attendees all clamouring to be heard it takes a practiced hand to keep everything under control but this is auctioneering American style. Russo & Steele have always relied on American automobilia to propel their auctions and rode the pre GFC muscle car craze hard. While the top selling car in ’07 may have been a Lamborghini Miura, beyond that it was all Detroit and so it would remain.

2016 128/228 (56%) $10,870,000 $1,155,000.00 Mercedes 300SL Gullwing
2017 105/203 (52%) $7,535,250 $1,155,000 Ferrari 250GT Europa

More recent sales have seen a small sprinkling of second tier European classics (300sls and Ferrari 275s) and even some of the more common modern collectibles. This years star lots are an eclectic bunch with a Porsche Carrera GT, McLaren Mercedes SLR and Lamborghini Countach 5000S offering interest to modern buyers. Classic buyers are encouraged to view the Ferrari 250GT Pininfarina Coupe and the 250GT Boano or maybe the fascinating McLaren Mark II. My favourite car of the sale has to be the Iso Lele which is a very rare example of a fascinating mid century design.

As with Mecum it must be noted that Russo & Steele’s style of auctioneering entails that lot lists are not finalised until the day of sale except for some star lots. AAM intends on keeping you abreast of the latest so we will be updated this page as often as possible but it could be somewhat of a crapshoot.

Russo & Steele Monterey 2007 – 2017 Gross results

Russo and Steele returned for another sale with their usual quantity of US vehicles and a smattering of classics. Like most auctions, 2017 saw Russo & Steele offer a collection of modern collectables, cars such as the 2017 Ferrari F12Tdf and the McLaren Mercedes SLR starring. Elsewhere they offered a selection from the Art Astor collection and these sold very well, a further highlight was the offering of two Ferraris, a 250GT Europa and 250GT Pininfarina Coupe. The former did well to sell for $1.155 million considering it lacked the original engine and gearbox while the latter failed to sell at $430k.

As for the star lots, few if any of them sold, the two Ford GTs failing at reported high bids of $292k, 215k and 400k respectively, the Mercedes SLS Roadster at $275k, Lamborghini Countach 5000S at $250k, Porsche 911R at $320k, McLaren M1B at $325k and SSC Aero at $375k. All of these failures left maybe $2.5 million worth of stock unsold while other failures were the Shelby Cobra with flaws at $700k and the as new in White Ferrari F12TDf at a reported $1.1 million high bid might have taken that figure to the $5 million mark. Now many of these cars were bidded to levels that cannot have been too far from where they could have been let go so one must consider whether chandelier bidding was in play. For those uninitiated that is the practice by which an auctioneer calls out bids that don’t exist to entice a real bidder to come in and is only semi – legitimate up to the reserve. While illegal it is not uncommon everywhere except New York state but takes practice to pull off and so long as they don’t continue beyond reserve nobody gets hurt.

Two cars that did sell were the Mercedes SLR sold at $352k and the Porsche Carrera GT sold at $671k, both acceptable for the cars on offer. Like the past couple of years, Russo & Steele managed to sell 52% of the lots on offer and they sold at an average of $71,674 per lot. This added up to a $7.53 million gross result which is fully 31% lower than 2016s results and not great but I am sure we will see Russo & Steele return in 2018.

Like Worldwide, Russo & Steele are pretty tardy with providing official results so the following results have been taken from reported figures and remain subject to change.

450 – 1973 Porsche 911E 9113201070 – Estimate not given – Not Sold N/A

Porsche 911E Coupe, VIN 9113201070, finished in the original Gemini Blue Metallic over black, with the original 2.4E mechanically fuel injected engine and the rare original sportomatic transmission. With a recent cosmetic and mechanical restoration, this car ready to enjoy immediately. The first three owners of the car were from the South Dakota area, where the car was routinely serviced at Carousel Porsche in Minnesota (the closest franchise dealer to Sioux Falls, SD) as well as Classic Import Repair in Sioux Falls. In 2008, the car came to California, where it was serviced by Auto Werkstatt in Manhattan Beach for a time, and more recently by the consignor at TLG Auto and AIR MotorSports. A complete engine rebuild at Carousel Porsche was completed in 1997-98 (approximately 20,000 miles ago) at a cost of over $10,000 (documents available). The front suspension pan was replaced by AIR in 2014, but all other body panels appear to be original. The consignor commissioned a glass out repaint of the car by AIR in 2016, and TLG Auto rebuilt the original sportomatic transmission in 2017. As part of the consignor’s refurbishment, the dash was repaired, the modern stereo was removed and replaced with a correct and fully functioning Becker Europa, the seats were recovered and a few other interior details attended to. The car has the original Fuchs wheels, the jack, the original owner’s manual and Porsche Certificate of Authenticity. The car was a US delivery car with a build date around April of 1973 and included light alloy wheels, stabilizer bars front & rear, chrome fender trim, S trim and instruments, tinted glass and a Becker Europa radio (all present). The COA confirms that the engine and transmission are original to the car (the original engine number per the COA is 6239260 and the original transmission number is 630509). In addition, the car has dealer installed AC, aluminum “S” front calipers and a steel “S” front bumper. The sportomatic transmission, with its clutchless shifting, was years ahead of its time. To prove it’s durability, Vic Elford raced a 1967 911R equipped with a sportomatic transmission, in which after 84 grueling hours on the Nurburgring Nordschleife, he brought his blood orange 911R to victory in the aptly named Marathon de la Route race of 1967. Over the years, many sportomatics were converted to full manual transmissions, so very few remain in existence as originally configured. The four-speed clutchless manual in this car has just been rebuilt, and is ready for touring or racing.

This 2007 Mercedes CLK63 has been very well taken care of with only 51,000 miles on the odometer. All maintenance is current and it has a clean CarFax. This car had an original window sticker of just under $100,000! This is a very fun car to drive sporting a 6.2L V8 that produces 475HP. This car can do 0-60 mph in just 4.2 seconds, 0-100 in 9.5, and the quarter-mile in 12.5 at 116 mph. That’s 0.6 second quicker through the quarter than the last CLK55 Coupe. Those numbers are also within a sneeze of some intense performers, including the Ferrari F430 and BMW M5, and sufficient to humiliate the 2006 M3.
