RM Monterey 18/8/17 & 19/8/17

http://media.rmsothebys.com/digitalcatalogs/2017/mo17/html5/index.html?page=1&noflash

RM started to host a Monterey sale way back in the mid 1990s in conjunction with the Monterey Sportscar Auction brand that was Rick Coles original brand name. A small Canadian company when they began they have both revolutionised the industry and grown to dominate the market. RM have recently partnered with Sothebys to form a company that is a byword for the best in the industry with excellent sales in both Europe and North America along with unparalleled access to consignments and bidders. The last decade has seen RM set multiple records, most notably the most expensive cars ever sold for the following makes/ models;

  • Ford GT40
  • Ferrari 275
  • 250LM
  • Jaguar
  • Alfa Romeo

RM revenues grew from $40 million in 2007 to $95 million in 2012 before jumping to $167 million in 2015. Revenues were well down in 2016 when redevelopment of the auction venue dropped the number of lots on offer from 150 to 100 and total revenues fell back to $117 million. One of the major factors in RM Sothebys recent success has been the consignment of collections with Pinnacle Portfolio accounting for $67 million in gross revenue in 2015. Another collection on offer in 2016 was a handful of cars from the private collection of Sam Mann although one was a $20 million Alfa Romeo. RM is offering 117 cars in 2017 and if the average of $1.1 – 1.2 million/ car offered continues they will gross $130 – 140 million.

2017 103/116 (89%) $132,781,450 $22,550,000 1956 Aston-Martin DBR1

This years sale is lead by a collection of Aston Martin and the Ferrari Performance collection along with a smattering of the worlds finest automobiles. Anyone interested in top flight classic sports racing cars can take their pick from the first of just five Aston Martin DBR1s ever made, perhaps the DB4GT prototype as raced by Stirling Moss is more your style or even the DB1 that started it all in ’49 while fans of the full “Bertie” should look no further than the Ulster that raced the Mille Miglia (the real one). Ferrari fans can also take their picks from a unique 166, the Uovo, maybe the Tipo 500 Mondial or even the fearsome 121 might be of interest while Porsche racers might like a rare if flawed Typ. 908/03.  If those are a little common what about the Bugatti Type 35C or the two McLarens, all very interesting and relatively cheap for what they are.

Touring fans (grand or not) can consider the velvet fist in an iron glove Corsica bodied Speed 6 Bentley or the Saliot Voisin, Bugatti Type 57 Cabriolet, Mercedes-Benz S-Type, Rolls-Royce Phantom I or either of the two Mercedes-Benz 500/540K. Post War GT fans could consider the DB4GT or the various Ferrari from the Performance Collection such as the 250SWB and 275GTB/4. Further interesting ’50s and ’60s cars include the Siata 208S, Maserati 5000S, Abarth 1100, Ferrari 275GTB/6C, 410 SA, 342 America, 365GTS or even a Pegaso Z-102. Modern cars on offer include the Lamborghini Concept S, Porsche 918, Pagani Huayra and Ferrari LaFerrari while frequent fliers include a Porsche 911/993 GT2, two Shelby Cobras and Ferrari 599GTO and F40.

RM will know that judgement for this years sale will almost certainly depend on the sale of the Aston Martin DBR1 but it would surprise if the 2017 sale is not another record setter.

Results

RM returned to Monterey and once more offered an extraordinary collection of automobiles lead by stellar collections of Aston Martins and Ferraris. RM offered 116 cars (23% down on their peak of 150) and this creates an interesting comparison with the gross sale which was a fantastic $133 million (21% below the $167 million peak in 2015). An interesting fact of reading through the sales on Saturday is that RM failed to sell just two of their 58 lots on offer while they failed to sell 11 of the 58 lots offered on Friday. It wasn’t all milk and honey with 36 of the 103 sales selling below estimate, 22 at above their high estimates and 3 were sold without any estimate being declared. These sale breakdowns were about average compared to Gooding but the quality of the consignments meant the per car average was enough to outweigh any lack in the breakdown.

RM did very well with the sale of the Aston Martin DBR1, selling it for $22.55 million against an undeclared estimate believed to have been $20 million plus, this being the fourth RM Monterey sale in five years to sell a car in this exclusive price bracket. Aside from that RM sold another three cars above $5 million, the Ferrari 250GT Short Wheelbase a rare sale for the model at $8.3 million (2% below low estimate), the prototype Aston Martin DB4GT at a mid estimate $6.8 million and the Ferrari 410SA at $5.3 million (3% below L/E). Elsewhere the company can be very pleased for selling the Aston DBR9 at $616k (90% above H/E), the Porsche 356 Pre-A Coupe at $1.017 million (45% above H/E) and Briggs own Cunningham did well at $1.1 million (16% over H/E), all of which sold very well indeed. The Porsche 918 sold well at $1.84 million (15% above H/E) as did the Ferrari 365GTS/4 at $2.172 million (9% above H/E) and the Ferrari F40 at $1.54 million (3% over H/E).

At the other extreme, the lovely Bugatti Type 57 was let go at $572k, a bargain for a concours quality full classic. The Aston Ulster sold for a relatively cheap $2.172 million (13% below L/E) as did the Ferrari 250GT at $610k. Another bargain was the Ferrari 166MM at $4.5 million (10% below L/E) for a unique car with much potential for use and so with the Maserati 5000GT at $1.017 million (7% below L/E). Good buying was the unique Ferrari 500/735 Mondial at $3.85 million (4% below L/E) as was the big Bentley Speed Six at $3.41 million (3% below L/E) as was the Ferrari 410SA as noted above. Indeed the vast majority of lots sold either mid estimate or slightly below estimate and RM did very well to ensure that anything close to the reserve got the deal away rather than taking the cars home with them.

What few no sales included some that what ifs such as the Voisin C28, a weird marque that is little known outside aficionados that failed well below the $800k low estimate, the DB5 which perhaps signals the heat is going out of that segment and the rather ugly DB1 which was always going to struggle to get sold at the rather strong estimate. A Ferrari that failed was the 250 Europa GT at a reported $1.6 million high bid as did the Mercedes-Benz S-Type at $2.6 million, both 20 – 30% below where they could rightfully have been let go. A slightly odd sale that shows just how strong the sale was, the Porsche 908/3 has massive holes in its provenance yet it sold for $3.5 million which while mid estimate is probably a million more than it was really worth.

Aside from the various excellent results for different cars, RM can be justly pleased with scoring both the highest gross at Monterey, highest top sell at Monterey and the highest average sale per car. That this is among the most successful auctions ever held is a spectacular success only supported by the fact that it came during what was supposedly a market makes it all the more remarkable. RM will look to back up this fantastic result with sales in London, Maranello and Hershey over the next six weeks and if they can continue to offer cars of the calibre seen at Monterey they will have immense success.
