Gooding Pebble Beach 18/8/17 & 19/8/17

http://www.goodingco.com/

Gooding returns to Pebble Beach for their 14th annual auction in conjunction with the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. A success from the start, Gooding have gone from strength to strength with further auctions at Scottsdale and Amelia Island and enormous success at their home event. More than just an auction Gooding Pebble is an event and frequently the site for a style of auction alchemy that is unparalleled and best witnessed in otherwise ordinary cars that sell for amounts that are shock and awe. At the top end, this sale has seen Ferrari such as the record setting Bertone SWB or the Testa Rossa, maybe the Whittel Duesenberg or the Von Krieger Mercedes and many more.

Total sale volumes have grown out of sight, in line with the market and they are firmly in competition with RM for each years top gross and top selling automobile. Its interesting to note that the total mid estimate of the entire lot list this year is $119 million and that is roughly $10 million less than the last two events and yet the lots on offer are the same, let alone accounting for less than a 100% sell through rate.

Gooding announced they would be offering the 917K that was withdrawn back in 2014 although this time it came with provenance that had been assessed by a 917 expert. Any example of a 917K is a wonderful beast, this one has an interesting story, was never raced but did feature in Steve McQueens Le Mans movie and is painted in the iconic Gulf Livery. As a star lot it is a wonderful car although arguably not as wonderful as some cars offered over the years and its marketplace birth is not a little messy. The next set of consignments included the very elegant and rare 250GT Cabriolet Series I, 500 Mondial, a Tipo 8V taking its second run over the block, the most beautiful Maserati A6G extant and a very cool Porsche 904.

The late announcement of an excellent 275GTB/C was a bit of a surprise and while not the greatest example available, it has an excellent provenance, great style and seems not a little too expensive. Other interesting cars include a brace of Alfa’s, 6C1750GS and 33TT12, two one owner Mercedes-Benz 300SLs, a Ferrari LaFerrari, the final Bugatti Type 57 and a fantastic Mercedes-Benz S-Type. Further afield there are plenty of interesting consignments including a Bertone Aston Martin, BMW 507 Roadster, Ferrari 275GTS, Porsche 959, Ferrari 275GTB/4 and 212 Inter. A fantastic selection for certain, it just doesn’t quite reach the heights of previous events but don’t let that stop you from watching or attending.

Perhaps the biggest news is that Gooding has changed their sale days, bringing them forward a day to Friday/ Saturday. I would not be surprised if the dual factors of matching RM/ Sothebys and people wanting/ needing to depart after a week of events have made Sunday untenable.

Results

Gooding returned to the peninsular to resume battle with RM to be number one in the hood. Unfortunately they bought a selection of classics that while nearly encyclopedic, lacked the fizz of previous years, no major Ferrari collections nor California Spider which was always going to hamper their efforts. While they will have been happy enough with the 81% sell through rate they wont have been happy to see total gross revenue drop 30% to $91.6 million. Unlike Bonhams, both of Goodings star cars sold very well indeed, the Porsche taking a mid estimate $14.08 million while the Ferrari 275GTB/C went for $14.52 million, both records for their respective models. It could be argued that the Porsche 917 was well bought since others have been selling privately at $20 million or more although as noted elsewhere it wasn’t the best example. Despite the mid estimate sale range the 275GTB/C was double what many GTB/Cs have sold for in recent years and is a fantastic result, somewhat in the vein of the 275GTB Speciale that RM sold a couple of years ago for $26 million in that it may be unrepeatable.

Elsewhere Gooding did very well with several further marque records, $4.4 million for the gorgeous Maserati A6G easily the most an A6G has sold for publicly. Gooding can have been justifiably pleased with $440k for the BMW Z8 was 60% over high estimate, the Ferrari 250GT Cabriolet Series II at $1.375 million (37% over H/E), the uniquely original Dunkelgren 300SL at $1.677 mil. (29% over H/E) and the Marrone Colorado 330GTC at $907k (13% over H/E) and the 275GTB with its comp mods (7075) went for $2.585 million (8% over H/E). Excepting the Z8 which like so many others was like new, these cars were either totally original and potentially unrepeatable or spectacularly restored and the sums paid were not unreasonable. At the other end of the spectrum the Porsche 959 was let go at 1.056 million (12% below low estimate) and even the gorgeous 250GT Cabriolet Series I struggled to $4.84 million (3% below L/E). 39 of the 110 examples that sold did so below their estimates, 22 above and 49 sold for mid estimate amounts which are market average.

Goodings disappointments include the Ferrari 330GT 2+2 Shooting Brake which failed to fire although these have always been a tough sell and you could argue that Jay Kay should have accepted the $475k high bid. Further examples that should have sold include the Alfa Romeo 33TT12 which failed to sell at a reported high bid of $1.8 mil against the $2.4 million low estimate although $1.8 would have been a record for the model and could have been accepted without concern. Another car that could have been sold was the $4.75 million high bid for the fabulous Mercedes S-Type especially considering the estimate was $5 million. All three of these bids could legitimately have been accepted and perhaps offer some support to the idea that Gooding may have been accepting chandelier bids although maybe it was simply unreasonable vendors.

Perhaps the only true failure to fire was the McLaren P1 that was bidded up to a reported $1.6 million, 20% below the traditional $2 million it took to buy one. An odd result was the Alfa Romeo 6C1750 that Gooding changed the description from Zagato to bodied in the style of Zagato and failed at a reported $1.35 million although they are offering it at $1.65 million post sale. Overall Gooding can be pleased with the results from Pebble Beach all things considered although they will need to work harder next year to compete with the resurgent RM team thats firing on all cylinders.
